ChatGPT can help you turn a learning goal into a draft homeschool lesson, activity, and practice questions. Treat the result as a starting point: you choose the curriculum, check the facts and safety, and adapt the lesson to your child.
What ChatGPT can—and cannot—do for homeschool planning
For planning, ask ChatGPT to draft a short sequence around a topic and a specific learning objective. It can suggest an opening question, explanation, activity, practice, and a quick check for understanding. The more you specify the learner’s level, prior knowledge, time, materials, and constraints, the more tailored the draft can be.
Study mode serves a different purpose: it is designed to guide learning with questions, step-by-step explanations, and checks for understanding. A learner can use it to practice, revisit a difficult idea, or break a topic into smaller parts. It may sometimes give a direct answer, so encourage your child to attempt the problem and explain their reasoning. OpenAI says Study mode “does not replace your teacher, tutor, course materials, or academic requirements.” OpenAI’s Study mode guidance also warns that it can make mistakes.

A practical workflow for planning a lesson

Set the learning context
Tell ChatGPT the learner’s approximate grade or skill level, subject, topic, prior knowledge, objective, available time, materials, and relevant constraints. An observable goal—such as “compare the life cycles of a butterfly and a frog”—is more useful than “learn about animals.” Include a curriculum or faith context only if you want it considered.

Ask for a draft, not a decision
Request a short sequence with an opening question, explanation, activity, practice, and a way to check understanding. Ask it to label assumptions and flag claims you should verify. Do not assume a generated plan is aligned with a particular curriculum unless you provide the relevant material and check the result yourself.

Ground the draft in your materials
When uploads are available, Study mode can work with materials such as notes, syllabi, worksheets, slides, textbook excerpts, and images. Attach only the relevant material and identify the page or section you want used. Avoid uploading sensitive personal information about your child. Feature availability and interface details can vary by account and app version.

Review before teaching
Check factual claims against trusted course materials or other reliable sources. Make sure the sequence and reading level fit your child, inspect any activity materials and safety instructions, and adapt the plan to your chosen course of study and applicable local requirements. Those judgments remain yours; ChatGPT does not guarantee curriculum alignment or compliance with homeschool rules.

Use Study mode for follow-through
After reviewing the lesson, invite your child to work through the topic with hints, one question at a time, explanations of missed answers, or flashcard-style review. Ask the learner to try first and explain what they understand rather than copy a generated response.

Revise after the lesson
Note what was easy or difficult, then ask ChatGPT for a revised practice activity or another explanation. Decide what to keep based on how your child responded.
A prompt you can adapt
Help me draft a 30-minute homeschool lesson for a [grade/skill level] learner about [topic]. The learner already knows [prior knowledge]. Our goal is [observable objective]. We have [materials] and need to avoid [constraints]. Give me: (1) a short lesson sequence, (2) one engaging activity, (3) three practice questions at increasing difficulty, and (4) a quick check for understanding. Mark assumptions and factual claims I should verify. Do not assume this is aligned to a particular curriculum unless I provide it.

For a study session after you have reviewed the lesson, try: “Use Study mode to help me understand [topic]. Ask one question at a time, give a hint before the answer, and explain any mistake. Use the attached [specific material/page] where relevant.”

OpenAI says ChatGPT is not intended for children under 13. If it is used in an educational setting with a child under 13, the actual interaction must be conducted by an adult. For ages 13–18, OpenAI says parental consent is required. Read OpenAI’s age guidance and supervise use appropriately.

OpenAI describes optional linked parent and teen accounts with Study mode controls, scheduled Study hours, and Quiet hours. Study hours can start eligible new chats in Study mode, but do not block access; Quiet hours schedule when a teen cannot use ChatGPT. See the parental controls guidance for current details. Availability and controls may change.
Availability and school-specific plans
OpenAI says Study mode is available globally across ChatGPT plans on web, iOS, and Android, and works with the models available to the user. The precise interface and tools can vary by account and app version; check your own account for what is available.
ChatGPT for Teachers is described as a plan for verified U.S. K–12 school or district employees, not students. It is not a general homeschool-family plan; eligibility is employment-based. OpenAI says shared information is not used to train models by default. See ChatGPT for Teachers details if you are an eligible school employee.
