For sensitive files, use an access-controlled feature or encryption suited to your device and situation. Before moving important data into a protected area, understand how you will recover it if you forget a PIN or lose an encryption key.
First decide what “private” needs to mean
The right option depends on who you want to keep out and what they can access. Hiding an item can reduce clutter or deter casual browsing. A separate device account can keep one household member’s files away from another’s account. Encryption is intended to protect data against access to its storage, but the available method depends on the operating system, edition, and configuration.
- Casual browsing: A hidden-item setting may be enough for organization, but it is easy to reverse.
- Another person using the same device: Use a separate account or a supported app-specific private area rather than relying on a hidden flag.
- Access to the device’s storage: Look for encryption appropriate to your device and threat. No per-folder option should be treated as a guarantee against every form of access.
- Photos or videos: A photo app’s locked area may be more appropriate than a general file feature.
Windows: hide items for convenience, encrypt supported files for protection
Hide a file or folder
Windows’ hidden-item setting is a visibility preference, not a security boundary. File Explorer can show hidden items again, so do not use this method for information that must resist someone who can use the computer.
- In File Explorer, right-click the file or folder and choose Properties.
- On the General tab, select Hidden, then choose Apply and confirm the change.
- To reveal hidden items, open File Explorer and choose View > Show > Hidden items. Microsoft documents this reveal path in its instructions for viewing hidden files and folders.
Encrypt a file or folder with EFS
Microsoft documents Encrypting File System (EFS) for supported Windows 10 and Windows 11 editions. It is not available in Windows Home, so the option may be absent there. On an edition that supports it:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Right-click the file or folder and choose Properties.
- Select Advanced.
- Check Encrypt contents to secure data, then apply the changes. Microsoft’s EFS instructions describe this procedure.
Encryption brings a recovery responsibility: if the credential or key needed to decrypt the files is unavailable, you may lose access. Make sure you understand the recovery path before encrypting important material. EFS should not be confused with hiding a file, and neither a per-file setting nor these instructions establish protection against every scenario, such as someone using your already-unlocked session or gaining other privileged access.
Windows 11 Personal Data Encryption is a managed feature, not a folder-password shortcut
Personal Data Encryption (PDE) is distinct from the EFS checkbox. Microsoft Learn says PDE requires Windows 11 version 22H2 or later, a Microsoft Entra-joined or hybrid-joined device, and Windows Hello sign-in; domain-joined devices are not supported. PDE is not enabled by default and requires configuration. PDE for the Desktop, Documents, and Pictures known folders is available starting with Windows 11 version 24H2. Microsoft also says users who sign in with a password or FIDO2 key cannot access PDE-protected content; it is tied to Windows Hello for Business. These requirements make PDE primarily an organizationally managed option, not a simple consumer control for password-protecting any folder. See Microsoft’s PDE overview.

Android: use Files by Google Safe folder with a recovery plan
Files by Google Safe folder is available on Android 8.0 and later. It lets you move files into a PIN- or pattern-protected area. Google says it uses Android storage encryption, but warns that someone with unauthorized access to internal storage may still be able to access the files. Google also says forgotten PINs or patterns prevent access, so do not move irreplaceable files there without considering how you will recover them.
- Open Files by Google and choose the Safe folder feature.
- Set a PIN or pattern when prompted.
- Select the files you want to protect and move them into Safe folder.
- Use the same PIN or pattern to open the folder. If you forget it, Google says the files cannot be accessed.
Check Google’s current Safe folder instructions and limitations before relying on it. Android’s app-specific storage model also limits apps to areas they use, which improves privacy, but that is app isolation—not a user-created hidden folder or an absolute safeguard if a device is compromised. See Android’s app-specific storage documentation.

Photos and videos: use Google Photos Locked Folder for supported content
Google Photos Locked Folder is intended for sensitive photos and videos in Google Photos, not arbitrary documents or folders. Google says access is protected by the device screen lock or Google Account password and that the feature uses Google Photos’ standard encryption practices. Read Google’s Locked Folder guidance for supported content and current behavior. Because access depends on your device or account credentials, keep those credentials recoverable before moving important media.
Apple devices: understand file protection without assuming a folder-hiding recipe
Apple’s security documentation describes Data Protection as using a unique key for each file or extent; erasing that key makes the corresponding file cryptographically inaccessible. This explains why key management matters, but the cited documentation does not provide a macOS folder-hiding or password-protected disk-image walkthrough. It should not be read as verification of specific Mac setup steps. See Apple’s Data Protection overview.

If you need to carry private files between devices
An encrypted USB flash drive or external drive is a category worth considering when sensitive files need to travel. Check that the drive works with your devices, how its encryption is unlocked, and what recovery options exist if you lose its credential. The security guidance from NIST on storage encryption for end-user devices discusses encrypted removable media as a way to protect portable data. That category guidance is not an endorsement or verification of any particular model.

Before moving important files into a protected area
- Identify who you are trying to keep out: a casual browser, another device account, or someone with access to storage.
- Confirm the feature applies to your OS version, Windows edition, device configuration, and type of content.
- Find out whether the feature uses your device account, screen lock, PIN, pattern, Windows Hello, or a separate key.
- Understand recovery before moving the files. A forgotten PIN, pattern, or lost key can make protected content unavailable.
- Keep a separate, secure backup where appropriate; a protected folder is not a substitute for a backup.
