Paladins is a free-to-play, fantasy 5v5 hero shooter built around team roles and deep Champion customization. Its active development was reported halted in February 2025, so it is important to distinguish the game’s core appeal from its uncertain long-term service status.
What is Paladins?
Paladins is a fantasy class-based first-person shooter from Hi-Rez Studios. Hi-Rez’s June 24, 2024 new and returning player guide describes it as “a free-to-play, fantasy class-based first-person shooter.” Steam also categorizes it as a hero shooter and describes 5v5 matches with more than 50 customizable Champions.
Rather than choosing only a weapon or a fixed class, you select a Champion and shape that character with a Talent and card loadout. Each Champion brings a distinct weapon, abilities, and Ultimate, so team composition and build choices affect how a match plays.
Is Paladins free to play?
Yes. Paladins is listed as free to play on Steam and the PlayStation Store. PlayStation states that online play is required and in-game purchases are optional. The game includes digital features such as Champions, Talents, card loadouts, and cosmetic rewards; the cited listings do not establish current prices or availability for individual purchases.

How do Paladins matches work?
Matches pit two teams of five against each other. Champions fall into four roles—Damage, Flank, Frontline, and Support—which describe common contributions rather than strict rules that every character follows in exactly the same way.
| Role | Typical contribution | New-player context |
|---|---|---|
| Damage | Deals sustained damage and controls areas. | The official guide suggests Damage is usually the easiest role to start with. |
| Flank | Uses mobility and burst damage to attack vulnerable or isolated opponents, often from the side or rear. | Rewards choosing targets and timing an approach. |
| Frontline | Holds objectives, protects teammates, and draws enemy attention. | Helps the team occupy and retain space. |
| Support | Heals allies and provides other utility, including offensive buffs. | Supports the team’s ability to sustain a fight. |
A team benefits when its Champions can collectively deal damage, control space, protect allies, and keep a fight going. The roles are a useful starting framework, not a promise that every Champion in a role plays identically.

What makes Champion customization distinctive?
Each Champion has a unique weapon, abilities that recharge on cooldowns, and an Ultimate that builds during a match. The official guide notes that actions relevant to a Champion’s role—such as eliminations or healing allies—can generate more Ultimate charge.
Talents
Each Champion has three Talents. You select one at the start of a match; the other Talents are unlocked by playing that Champion. A Talent gives you a way to emphasize a particular approach before the fight begins.

Card loadouts
Card loadouts let you further shape a Champion’s playstyle. Together, a Champion choice, Talent, and loadout mean that two players using the same character need not approach a match in the same way. For a first match, it is reasonable to begin with a straightforward Damage Champion, then explore the available Talent and loadout options as you learn what the character does.
What is Siege mode in Paladins?
Siege is the core mode identified in Hi-Rez’s player guide. Its round centers on capturing a point and then attempting to move a payload toward the opposing team’s spawn.

- Contest the capture point. Both teams fight over a single objective.
- Capture it to earn a point and trigger the payload phase. The capturing team then tries to push the payload toward the opponent’s spawn.
- Defend or delay the push. The opposing team can contest the payload and slow its progress.
- Resolve the round. Whether the payload is pushed successfully determines the round’s point outcome, as described in the official guide.
The guide also names Onslaught and Team Deathmatch as base modes and mentions rotating limited-time modes. Rotations can change, so a specific limited-time mode should not be assumed to be available.

The Steam announcement archive lists a hotfix dated February 3, 2025, and update notes dated January 29, 2025. Those earlier notes described an intention to move toward smaller, more frequent updates, but the later February 6 report of the development halt supersedes that earlier plan.
Is Paladins still playable?
The February 2025 report described an expectation that servers would remain online for the foreseeable future, not a guarantee of indefinite service. That dated statement does not establish whether the game or its servers are available in October 2026. Check the relevant platform listing and current server status before starting or returning; the sources cited here do not establish present uptime, regional matchmaking times, player counts, or queue health.
