There is no single best PCVR preset for every headset or game. Start with the headset and runtime’s recommended resolution, choose a refresh rate your PC can sustain, then adjust one setting at a time. Render resolution is usually the clearest tradeoff to manage: raising it can sharpen the image but increases GPU load; lowering it can help a GPU-bound game deliver frames but makes the picture blurrier.

Start with a stable baseline

  1. Set the headset and PCVR runtime to their default or recommended rendering resolution. Avoid assuming that 100% or 150% is right for every headset.
  2. Select a refresh rate supported by your headset and runtime.
  3. Launch the game at its ordinary graphics preset.
  4. Change one setting at a time, then check both image clarity and frame delivery in the same scene. This makes it easier to identify which adjustment helped or hurt.

Balance render resolution against GPU load

Render scale controls how many pixels the PC renders for the headset. Meta’s guidance is that higher resolution reduces aliasing and makes the image appear sharper, at the cost of higher GPU usage. Lowering it can ease GPU load, but may make the image blurrier. The right point depends on the headset, runtime, game, and PC.

Meta’s documented Quest values illustrate why a percentage is not a universal target: Quest 3’s physical display resolution is 2064×2208 pixels per eye, while its render target at 1.0 scale is 1680×1760 per eye. Meta says approximately 1.2 render scale corresponds to physical display resolution on Quest generally. That is a platform reference, not a recommended setting or a promise that a particular PC can run games at that scale. Meta’s render-scale documentation lists device-specific values.

Increase resolution only while the game continues to deliver frames reliably. If performance falters, step it down before making broad changes elsewhere. In-game antialiasing and other visual effects can also affect image quality and performance, so adjust them separately rather than changing several controls at once.

Choose a refresh rate your PC can sustain

A higher refresh-rate setting can make motion appear smoother only if the system can keep up with the workload. It is not an automatic image-quality upgrade, and a demanding game may perform less consistently at a higher target.

Meta documents 120 Hz support for Quest 3 through the Link app’s Graphics Preferences. Its developer compliance documentation lists interactive refresh options of 72, 80, 90, 96, 100, or 120 Hz, with availability depending on the device. Those developer requirements are not a promise that every mode appears in every consumer headset’s settings. Meta’s Link guidance and its developer compliance requirements describe these different contexts.

Tune a demanding game without changing every game

Adjust SteamVR per-application resolution

SteamVR provides per-application settings, including resolution per eye, refresh-rate override, frame throttling, and motion smoothing. If one title struggles, lower its resolution first instead of reducing resolution globally for every application. The Steamworks per-application settings documentation describes these controls.

Evaluate motion smoothing in the game

Motion smoothing is a control to test, not a guaranteed fix. Whether it looks preferable depends on the game and the artifacts you see. Steam’s release-note documentation describes motion-smoothing behavior and an always-on per-application mode for the configuration covered there; it is historical documentation, so current options and behavior may differ.

Diagnose the bottleneck before changing more settings

VR performance problems can come from either GPU or CPU load. Meta’s PC-VR guidance recommends identifying which is responsible before optimizing. If the GPU is the constraint, try reducing render scale or pixel-heavy effects. If the CPU is the constraint, reduce scene complexity or other CPU-heavy settings where the game provides them. Change one control at a time and observe the result; a driver setting is not a universal cure for stutter.

Meta’s performance guidance identifies possible costs including dependent renders such as shadows and reflections, transparency, multipass shaders, and large texture loads. Which controls matter most varies by title. The same page includes legacy Rift Store criteria of 90 fps on recommended hardware and 45 fps on minimum hardware with ASW; these are historical developer targets, not universal current PCVR settings. See Meta’s PC-VR performance guidance.

If you use an NVIDIA GPU, its Low Latency Mode limits queued frames to one when enabled, while Ultra minimizes the queue, according to NVIDIA’s feature description. That explains the control, but does not establish a universally best VR driver profile. Leave global driver settings alone unless you have a specific game-related reason to change them.

Fixed foveated rendering

Fixed foveated rendering reduces resolution toward the edges of the eye buffer to save GPU work while retaining more detail in the center. Meta Horizon OS Developers reported up to 25% frame-rate improvement in pixel-intensive apps on a feature page updated September 14, 2026. That is a qualified, app-dependent maximum—not a result to expect in every game or a setting every player can enable from the PC. Meta’s foveated-rendering documentation describes the feature.

Quest Super Resolution

Meta describes Quest Super Resolution as spatial upscaling and sharpening. For Quest Link, Meta says it can be enabled through the Quality Link Sharpening option in the Oculus Debug Tool. It is an optional Quest-specific setting and should not be assumed to apply to other headsets or runtime combinations. Details are in Meta’s Quest update article.

Wired Quest Link is a connection choice, not a graphics preset

For a compatible Quest setup, wired Link is one way to connect the headset to a Windows PC for PCVR. A compatible USB-C Link cable may be relevant if you choose that setup, but the cited Link documentation does not establish a particular cable requirement, product recommendation, or performance advantage over other connection options. Check compatibility for your headset and setup before buying anything; a cable should not be treated as a way to improve sharpness or frame rate. Meta’s Quest Link guidance covers Link setup and graphics preferences.
