Choose a smart lock only after confirming how you can enter if its batteries die or its usual credentials are unavailable. Depending on the exact model, backup access may be a physical key, temporary external power, or both. Pick a documented method your household can use, and check the lock’s instructions rather than assuming app access or a particular battery will work in an emergency.
What a smart-lock backup method does—and does not do
A backup method is a way to regain access when the lock cannot operate normally. A physical key provides a separate mechanical entry path on models equipped with one. A temporary-power connection supplies power to a depleted lock on supported models; it does not necessarily bypass a forgotten code or other failed credential. Follow the model’s emergency procedure and make sure you have whatever credential it requires.
These options are model-dependent. Schlage says its electronic locks have either a physical-key backup or a jumpstart port, depending on the model, while Yale documents particular models that provide both a key and temporary external power. Schlage’s backup-access overview describes the brand’s options; it is not a guarantee that every lock has both.

Yale’s regional support page for the YDM4109A describes AA batteries, a 9V battery for temporary power if the AA batteries are depleted, and a backup physical key. Check warnings and maintenance instructions
Low-battery alerts can give you time to replace the installed batteries, but they are a warning—not an emergency entry method. Schlage says low-battery indicators or app notifications vary by model. Yale also describes a low-battery notification for the YDM4109A. Check the exact lock’s instructions for its warning behavior and battery-replacement procedure; the cited material does not support a cross-brand battery-life comparison.
- Identify how the lock signals a low battery, including whether the alert is on the lock, in an app, or both.
- Follow the manual’s battery type and replacement instructions.
- Keep the specified emergency battery available only if the lock’s documented procedure calls for one, and know where it is stored.
- Do not wait for an alert to be your only plan: consider what happens if the batteries run out before anyone sees it.
Account for key-free designs and the door
A key-free lock removes the physical-key route, so the household’s alternate-entry plan matters more. Yale’s Assure Lever instructions identify a mechanical key for the YRL226 and describe the YRL256 as key-free, recommending the key-free model where another entry point into the dwelling is available. The manual also cautions: “While Yale® has included several features to prevent lockout (9-Volt battery jumper, low battery warnings), it is still possible for a lockout situation to occur.” This is guidance for those specific models, not a universal statement about every smart lock. Before choosing a model, verify that it is compatible with your door and installation. The cited manufacturer materials are model-specific and do not establish a complete door-compatibility checklist for all locks. If the product documentation does not clearly address your door, get the fit confirmed before relying on it as your entry hardware.

- Find the exact model’s manual. Confirm whether it has a physical key, an external-power connection, or both.
- Read the emergency procedure. For external power, verify the specified battery type and terminal, and note whether you still need a code, app credential, or other valid credential to unlock.
- Check who can use the backup. Decide how household members will access a spare key or obtain the specified emergency battery when needed.
- Review warnings and battery replacement. Confirm the lock’s low-battery signals and follow its maintenance instructions.
- Plan for another way in. If the lock is key-free, consider whether another entry point is available and usable.
- Confirm door fit. Check the model’s installation requirements for your door before buying or installing it.
Manufacturer documentation establishes which backup features a particular model is designed to offer; it does not show how often those features succeed during real-world emergencies. Without independent comparative testing, there is no sound basis here for ranking brands by backup reliability. Compare the documented procedure and choose one your household can realistically carry out.
