Choose a traditional keypad deadbolt if you mainly want to enter a code instead of carrying or sharing keys. Choose a smart lock if you have a specific need for remote control, connected access-code management, or smart-home integration. A keypad lock is not automatically a smart lock: some connected locks have keypads, while simpler keypad models may work without remote access.
What is the difference between a keypad lock and a smart lock?
A keypad deadbolt’s defining feature is code-based entry. Depending on the model, it may also have a physical key cylinder and other options, but do not assume those features are standard.
A smart lock adds connected functions, which can include app control, remote access, code management, voice control, or smart-home integration. These features vary by model and setup. For example, Schlage says its Encode Wi-Fi lock can be controlled from anywhere through the Schlage Home app or Key by Amazon app without an additional accessory. That is a claim about that model, not all smart locks.
Which type fits the way you need to use the door?
Choose a keypad deadbolt for straightforward code entry
If you want to unlock the door with a code and do not need remote control, start by comparing keypad deadbolts. Check the exact model for the features you care about, such as a keyed override, low-battery warning, or options for managing codes. A keypad alone does not establish that a lock works with an app or can be controlled while you are away.

Choose a smart lock when connected access solves a real problem
A smart lock is worth considering if you need to manage access remotely or want a particular app or smart-home integration. Confirm that the exact model supports your preferred method. Schlage’s smart-lock comparison distinguishes features such as built-in Wi-Fi, remote access, voice control, and smart-home support across named models; the word “smart” by itself does not guarantee any one of them.
Compare the practical trade-offs

Check door fit and backup access before buying
Before ordering either type, compare the manufacturer’s preparation and installation instructions with your door. Check bore-hole fit, handing, backset, and compatibility with existing hardware where the model’s instructions specify them. Also identify how you would enter if the battery fails or the electronics cannot operate. Schlage says its electronic locks use backup options such as a physical key or a jumpstart port, depending on the model. Verify the exact lock’s backup method and follow its instructions rather than assuming all models work alike.
How should you secure a connected lock?
For a smart lock, treat both the device and its associated account or app as part of your home’s connected-device security. The Federal Trade Commission’s guidance on securing internet-connected devices at home, dated August 2022, advises changing default credentials, using available security features, applying updates, and disabling remote management when you do not need it. The FTC puts it plainly: “Disable features you won’t use. If you won’t use remote management, it’s best to disable it.” This is general connected-device advice, not a comparative test of door locks.

Does a smart lock offer better security?
There is no sound category-wide answer from the available evidence. A connected lock’s app features do not prove it resists forced entry, picking, or electronic compromise better than a keypad deadbolt. Nor does a simpler keypad design prove that it is immune to physical or electronic attacks. Compare the documentation and relevant certification for the exact models you are considering; a defensible model-to-model security judgment requires independent, relevant testing.
