A Wi-Fi or internet outage is different: keypad or other local entry may still work, while remote control, monitoring, or cloud-dependent features may not. What remains available depends on the exact lock model.
What happens to a smart lock when the power goes out?
In battery-powered models, the lock draws power from its own batteries rather than household mains electricity. Schlage says its residential electronic and smart locks are battery-operated and continue to function during a household power outage. It also cautions that features relying on Wi-Fi or cellular data may be unavailable. Schlage’s power-outage guidance was updated August 1, 2025.
The distinction matters because a home router may also lose power during an outage unless it has backup power. The lock can remain powered while its connection to the internet disappears. That can interrupt app control from outside the home or delay information sent to a vendor’s cloud.
Which entry methods can work without Wi-Fi?
Check the manufacturer’s instructions for your installed model; do not assume that every app can connect directly to every lock. A keypad, physical key, Bluetooth connection, NFC feature, or emergency power contact may work in some models, but the available methods differ.

Yale Wi-Fi Smart Lock with Keypad
Yale says the lock and keypad for model AUG-SL05-K04-G01 are battery-powered, and that keypad entry can be used during a power outage. The product is designed to install over an existing keyed deadbolt, so the existing key may also be relevant to entry. Yale’s product page displayed an out-of-stock notice when accessed October 7, 2026; availability can change.
Schlage Encode Plus and Sense Pro
Schlage documents keypad codes and Apple HomeKey access on Encode Plus without active internet. For Sense Pro, Schlage says Bluetooth app access and code entry remain available during power or Wi-Fi outages. Its guidance also says Encode Plus activity history may sync after the internet connection returns, rather than appearing remotely in real time. Why can a keypad code fail when the lock is offline?
Not every code behaves the same way. Schlage says scheduled codes on its locks do not function while the lock is offline; only codes that were active when Wi-Fi was lost continue to work until the connection returns. That makes cloud-managed guest access a special case, not a safe assumption for every keypad code. Schlage’s offline-code guidance was updated June 10, 2025.
If you rely on time-limited access for a guest or service provider, verify your model’s offline behavior before an outage. Consider keeping an already-active local code or another entry option available, and avoid relying on a code that needs a cloud connection to become active.

What if the lock batteries are depleted?
A dead lock battery is separate from a household power outage: the lock may need a physical key or a model-specific temporary-power procedure. Schlage describes different backup methods across its products, including physical keys or jumpstart options depending on the model. Sense Pro has a USB-C jumpstart port. Yale’s cited model fits over an existing keyed deadbolt. Schlage’s smart-lock product information describes model-dependent low-battery alerts and backup methods.
Follow the manual for the exact lock to identify its battery type and the correct emergency procedure. Do not substitute a battery based on a generic smart-lock recommendation. Pay attention to low-battery alerts and keep the specified replacement batteries available before the lock reaches the point where it cannot operate.

Prepare your household before an outage
- Find the lock’s exact model number and confirm its documented entry methods for Wi-Fi loss and household power loss.
- Test the local method—such as a keypad code or physical key—while the lock is working, and show household members how to use it.
- Record the manufacturer’s battery-replacement and emergency-power steps somewhere accessible if phones or internet service are unavailable.
- Keep the battery type specified in the lock’s manual on hand.
- If you use guest codes, check whether they are stored on the lock or depend on the cloud, and plan for offline access.
What to check when choosing a replacement lock
Compare models by the ways you would actually need to enter and recover access. Product names alone do not establish whether a feature works offline, and compatibility with an existing deadbolt or smart-home setup can vary.

- Does keypad access continue during a household power outage?
- What happens if the lock batteries are depleted: physical key, temporary-power port, or another documented method?
- Are access codes stored locally, or do scheduled codes depend on a cloud connection?
- Does the lock retain a physical keyway, and will it fit your existing deadbolt and smart-home setup?
