Usually, a dead battery stops a smart lock’s electronic functions, but whether you can still unlock the door depends on that exact model. Some locks have a mechanical keyway; certain key-free Yale models can be powered briefly with a standard 9V battery at external terminals. Neither fallback is universal, so check your lock’s manual and replace its batteries as soon as it warns you.
What happens when a smart lock’s batteries die?
When a lock’s internal batteries are exhausted, its keypad, motor, or other electronic entry functions may stop working. The available documentation does not establish a single fail-open or fail-locked behavior for all smart locks. Your ability to get inside depends on whether the lock has a physical keyway or a documented emergency-power method.
That is different from a household power outage. Schlage says its residential electronic and smart locks run on batteries and continue to function during a power outage, although features that rely on Wi-Fi or cellular communications may be unavailable (Schlage’s power-outage guidance). Losing internet access does not itself mean the lock’s batteries are dead.
Which backup methods do specific locks use?
Backup procedures vary by model, even within a manufacturer’s product line. Confirm your model number and read its manual before relying on a key or emergency battery.

Mechanical keyway
If your lock has a key cylinder, the physical key is the fallback described for that model. Make sure someone who may need to enter can reach the key; a key that is inaccessible during a lockout is not a useful backup.
Emergency 9V power
Some key-free Yale locks have external terminals for a standard 9V battery. The battery supplies temporary power so you can use the lock’s normal supported entry method and replace its internal cells. It does not recharge the lock: Yale states, “The 9V battery does not charge the lock; it provides temporary power only.” Do not assume another brand or model has these terminals, or follow a procedure meant for a different lock.

How to avoid a battery-related lockout
- Find the model number and manual. Confirm whether your lock has a keyway, emergency terminals, or another documented fallback, and note the exact steps and required battery type.
- Respond to low-battery warnings promptly. Alerts may appear on the keypad, in an app, or both, depending on the model. Schlage documents low and critically low battery signals for named keypad and Touch models, with signals that vary by model (Schlage’s low-battery guidance). Yale says its referenced Yale Access locks can show a low-battery notification at 25% capacity, with notifications becoming more frequent near end of life; this alert behavior is model-specific (Yale’s battery-alert guidance).
- Install the specified replacement cells. For the Yale Access locks covered by its guidance, Yale recommends replacing all four batteries with new non-rechargeable alkaline AA cells. Check your own manual for the number, size, and chemistry required.
- Keep the fallback practical. If your model depends on a physical key, make sure an authorized household member can access it. If it uses emergency terminals, keep the specified backup battery available and know where the terminals are.
How long do smart-lock batteries last?
There is no single lifespan that applies to every lock. Usage, temperature, humidity, battery quality, and the model itself can affect battery life; use manufacturer figures as planning estimates, not guarantees.

What to check before relying on a smart lock
- Whether your exact model has a mechanical keyway, emergency terminals, or another manufacturer-documented entry method.
- How the lock signals low and critically low batteries, and whether app alerts depend on a working connection.
- The required cell size and chemistry, plus the manufacturer’s replacement guidance.
- Which features work locally at the lock and which depend on Wi-Fi, cellular service, or a hub.
