Create and manage standard iCloud Mail aliases in Mail on iCloud.com. An alias is an alternate @icloud.com address attached to your existing iCloud Mail account—not a separate mailbox or Apple Account. You can create up to three, edit the label or sender name, disable one temporarily, or delete one permanently.
What an iCloud Mail alias does
Apple describes an email alias as “an alternate email address” that works like a nickname and can help keep your real email address private. A standard alias ends in @icloud.com and is connected to your primary iCloud Mail account. Messages sent to it normally arrive in that account’s inbox, and you can send mail from the alias using Mail on iCloud.com or devices where Mail is turned on in iCloud settings. Create an iCloud Mail alias
Create standard aliases in Mail on iCloud.com. Apple’s documented address-text limit is 3–20 characters; you also choose a label and a full name for outgoing messages.
- Go to icloud.com/mail and sign in to your Apple Account if prompted.
- Open the Settings menu above the mailbox list, then select Settings.
- Select Add alias.
- Enter the alias address, a label, and a full name. The address text must be 3–20 characters. The label identifies the alias in the list, while the full name appears in the From field of outgoing mail.
- Select Create.

Edit, disable, or delete an alias
In iCloud.com Mail, open Settings and select the alias you want to manage. You can change its label or full name and save the changes.
Disable an alias temporarily
- Select the alias in Mail Settings.
- Check Disable alias, then save.
To use it again, return to that alias’s settings, clear Disable alias, and save. While the alias is disabled, messages sent to it are returned to the sender.

Delete an alias permanently
- Select the alias in Mail Settings.
- Choose Delete alias and confirm.
Deletion is permanent. Messages sent to a deleted alias are returned to the sender, just as they are for a disabled alias. Apple also says that if you have three aliases and delete one, you must wait seven days before creating another. See Apple’s alias management instructions.
Limits and account restrictions
- A standard iCloud Mail account can have up to three @icloud.com aliases after its primary iCloud Mail address is set up.
- The alias address text must be 3–20 characters.
- After deleting one of three aliases, Apple requires a seven-day wait before you can create another.
- You cannot change an alias address, transfer it, convert it to a primary account, or use it to create a separate Apple Account.
These limits are stated in Apple’s iCloud Mail alias guide and its iCloud Mail overview. Apple documents a legacy exception for accounts that retained five MobileMe aliases when moved to iCloud: those accounts keep the five, but deleting one does not make a replacement available.

Standard aliases, Hide My Email, and custom domains
These are different ways to use alternate email addresses; they have different limits and purposes.

Hide My Email is not another name for a standard iCloud Mail alias: it creates random forwarding addresses and requires iCloud+. Custom-domain addresses also have their own setup rather than using the standard alias controls.
