Android search privacy is controlled in several places, not by one master switch. Google Account activity settings govern what search activity may be saved to your account; Android has a separate on-device personalization index; and device location permissions affect one of several ways Search can estimate where you are. Turning a control off generally affects future use or saving—it does not automatically erase activity already stored.
First, identify which kind of search data you want to control
| Control layer | What it affects | Where to look on Android |
|---|---|---|
| Google Account activity | Searches and other Google activity that may be saved to the signed-in account and used for personalization. | Settings > Google > Manage your Google Account > Data & privacy > History settings |
| On-device personalization | An index of data from selected apps or sources on the device that Google apps may use for suggestions. | Settings > Google > All services > Privacy & security > Personalize using shared data |
| Contextual Suggestions | A Google Play services feature that uses on-device data for app suggestions, with separate controls for device location. | Settings > Apps > All apps > Google Play services > All services > Developer features > Contextual Suggestions |
| Device and app location | Whether Search can use precise device location; it does not control other location signals such as IP address or saved places. | Android location settings and the relevant app or site permission |
These paths and labels can vary by Android version, device maker, app version, signed-in account, and Google’s gradual settings rollout. If a label differs, look in the current Google Account’s Data & privacy and History settings and follow the wording shown on your screen. Administrator-managed accounts may also have different controls.
How Google Account search history works
When the relevant activity controls are on, Google may save Search activity and related information to the account you are signed into. Google’s Web & App Activity documentation says saved activity can include searches and activity on Google products and services, with details such as language and device type and, depending on settings, general location or IP information. Selected options may also include Chrome history, audio interactions, and activity on sites and apps that use Google services. See Google’s explanation of Web & App Activity.
Account activity controls apply across devices where you are signed in. Check which Google account is active before changing settings: if you use more than one account, each may have its own history and settings.

Find the account activity controls
- Open Settings on your Android device.
- Tap Google, then Manage your Google Account.
- Open Data & privacy and find History settings.
- Select the relevant activity or history control and follow the on-screen options to turn it on or off.
Google is gradually introducing a separate Search Services History control for Search and certain other services. You may not see it yet. If it has not appeared for your account, Google’s help page says Web & App Activity continues to control search history and personalized recommendations. The exact screen depends on rollout status; consult Google’s current activity-control instructions.
Stopping future saves is different from deleting old searches
Turning an activity control off governs future saving under that control. To remove activity already saved, use the deletion options in the relevant history settings or open My Activity from Data & privacy and delete selected items or a chosen range. If offered, Turn off and delete combines stopping future activity under that control with initiating deletion of existing activity; simply turning the control off is not the same as deleting the past.

For Search Services History, Google documents continuous deletion choices of 3, 18, or 36 months. These are available settings, not a universal default, and the options depend on whether the updated control has reached your account. Follow the choices actually shown in your account.
Deletion is not necessarily instantaneous. Google says removal starts by taking activity out of view and making it unavailable for personalization, then proceeds through a process intended to delete it from storage systems. Some data may be retained longer for limited business or legal purposes. Details are in Google’s information about deleting activity.

On-device personalization is not account history
Android’s Personalize using shared data setting controls access by Google apps such as Search and Assistant to an on-device personalization index. Use Settings > Google > All services > Privacy & security > Personalize using shared data to choose which apps or sources can contribute indexed data. The index is stored on the device.
Restricting access to that local index does not, by itself, stop Web & App Activity from saving account-level activity or Google from using that account activity for personalization. The two settings address different data and different storage locations. See Google’s Android instructions for shared-data personalization.

Control Contextual Suggestions separately
Contextual Suggestions is a Google Play services feature for app suggestions based on activity and location. Google says the data used for this feature stays on the device, is not shared with Google, and is used for on-device learning. That description applies to Contextual Suggestions, not to Google Account Search history generally.
Open Settings > Apps > All apps > Google Play services > All services > Developer features > Contextual Suggestions. From there, you can turn the feature off, leave suggestions on while disabling Use device location, or delete the feature’s stored data. Google says this feature’s data is automatically deleted after 60 days. See Google’s Contextual Suggestions help page.

Why Search can still estimate your location
Device location permission is only one input. Depending on availability, Google says Search may estimate location using precise device location, home or work addresses saved to the Google Account, previous Google activity, or the internet connection’s IP address. Prior searches can affect a later estimate—for example, searching for a neighborhood may influence a subsequent search for a nearby business. Google’s explanation is at How Google determines your location when you search.
- Precise device location: Android location settings and app or site permissions determine whether Search can use it. This can improve nearby results such as coffee shops or ATMs.
- Saved home or work addresses: Google may use a saved address when it estimates that you are there.
- Previous activity: If you are signed in and Web & App Activity is enabled, past Google activity may contribute to location estimates.
- IP address: Your internet connection can reveal a general geographic area to online services, even when device location is unavailable.
To see Google’s stated basis for a result, check the location explanation at the bottom of a Google results page. Disabling device-based precise location can remove that input, but it does not erase account history or necessarily prevent estimates from saved places, previous activity, or IP information.
Choose controls based on your goal
- To stop account-level history saving: Check the current account’s History settings under Data & privacy, and turn off the relevant activity control.
- To remove searches already saved: Open My Activity or the relevant history page and use its item, date-range, or other deletion options.
- To limit suggestions from local app data: Review Personalize using shared data and Contextual Suggestions separately; changing one does not change the other.
- To limit precise location use: Change Android’s device location or the relevant app/site permission, while recognizing that other location signals may still be available.
Google’s settings can change as the Search Services History rollout continues. For the most accurate path, use the current labels on your device and in the account you want to manage.
