Set your air conditioner to the warmest temperature that still feels comfortable, then raise it when you are asleep or away if practical. For central AC, set the system fan to AUTO; for a room AC, use low fan speed on humid days if the unit offers it and moisture removal is a priority. A room fan can help circulate cooled air so you can stay comfortable at a higher AC setting.
What temperature should I set my AC to in summer?
Use the highest temperature that remains comfortable for the people in the room. ENERGY STAR gives 78°F as a typical room-air-conditioner setting, not a universal ideal; comfort varies with humidity, activity, clothing, and individual needs. Its room air conditioner guidance recommends setting the thermostat as high as is comfortable. The U.S. Department of Energy likewise advises using the highest comfortable summer setting; a smaller difference between indoor and outdoor temperatures reduces the overall cooling load.
If that setting feels too warm, lower it until the room is comfortable rather than treating a particular number as a target. A room fan can move cooled air around and may help occupants feel comfortable without lowering the AC setpoint. Turn fans off in empty rooms: they cool people, not the room itself.
Should I turn the AC up when I’m away or asleep?
Raising the setpoint during sleep or when the home is empty can reduce unnecessary cooling. ENERGY STAR’s 2025 Room AC Factsheet recommends setting a room AC 4°F higher during sleep and 7°F higher when nobody is home. These are room-air-conditioner recommendations, not a schedule guaranteed to suit every household or central HVAC system. Choose an increase that remains safe and comfortable for people, pets, and any temperature-sensitive belongings.

Should my AC fan be on auto or on?
Central air conditioning
Set the central HVAC system fan to AUTO rather than continuous ON when following DOE’s general energy-saving advice. In AUTO, the blower runs with the cooling cycle instead of running continuously. For extra air circulation, use a room fan rather than relying on the central blower to run all the time. The DOE’s Energy Saver guidance describes this principle; follow your system manual for model-specific controls.
Room or window air conditioner
Room AC fan controls are different from a central system’s blower setting. Choose the room unit’s fan speed based on comfort and conditions. On humid days, ENERGY STAR recommends low fan speed when the unit provides that option, because slower airflow gives the unit more opportunity to remove moisture from the air. Check the unit manual: controls and modes differ by model.

What AC fan setting is best on humid days?
For a room AC with fan-speed controls, try low speed when humidity is the main source of discomfort and the room can still cool adequately. Temperature and humidity are related, but they are not interchangeable: lowering the thermostat may make people too cold without bringing indoor humidity under control. The DOE discusses this issue in its Advanced HVAC Humidity Control for Hot-Humid Climates project summary.
Unit size also affects comfort. ENERGY STAR notes that an oversized room AC can cool a space before removing enough moisture, leaving it damp or clammy. If a room remains humid despite appropriate settings, do not assume that turning the thermostat lower will solve the problem; the equipment’s sizing, controls, or separate humidity management may need attention.
Does setting the AC colder make it cool faster?
No. The DOE says setting the thermostat colder than normal when starting the AC will not cool the home faster. It can instead keep the system cooling longer than needed, overcool the space, and waste energy. Set the temperature you actually want and let the system reach it.
Quick Recap
Which other changes help the settings work better?
- Keep the thermostat away from heat sources. Lamps and TVs near a thermostat can make it sense more heat and cause the AC to run longer. ENERGY STAR includes this advice in its room AC guidance.
- Check the filter. ENERGY STAR advises checking filters monthly during heavy-use months and replacing them when dirty. Its general heating and cooling guidance says to replace filters at least every three months; your equipment’s filter requirements and usage may call for a different interval.
- Use a room fan to circulate air. It can improve how cooled air reaches occupants without requiring a lower AC setting. Do not treat a fan as a way to cool an unoccupied room.
