Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallNo. You can start playing 4X strategy games without paid DLC, and there is no universal “best first add-on.” Begin with the base game or its recommended entry point, check what your edition already includes, then choose optional content for the mechanics, factions, leaders, or themes you actually want. Recommendations can become outdated when publishers add DLC to a base edition.
Why there is no single best first DLC
“4X DLC” is not one interchangeable product. An add-on might introduce new systems, playable factions or leaders, story and exploration content, or cosmetic options. Which one is worthwhile depends on the game and the kind of campaign you want—not on a genre-wide ranking.
For example, Civilization VI’s complete-content upgrade lists two expansions, smaller DLC packs, and two passes, while Stellaris offers expansions, story packs, and species packs. Those categories describe different kinds of additions, so choose by what you want to change about your game rather than by the number of add-ons you can buy. See the Stellaris Steam listing and 2K’s Civilization VI Anthology Upgrade listing.
Check your edition before buying
First confirm the exact game, platform, and edition you own. Check the current base-game listing for included expansions, free updates, and any edition upgrade. Do not rely on an older buying guide without checking its advice against the current store page: content once sold separately may be included in the base game or a bundle now.

Stellaris is a clear example of why this check matters. Paradox announced on March 19, 2026, that Utopia, Synthetic Dawn, and the Humanoids Species Pack would join the base game on May 11, 2026. The effective date has passed, so check the current listing for your platform and edition rather than buying one of those add-ons based on older advice. Paradox’s announcement also recalls that Utopia was the community’s long-running first-DLC recommendation—but that historical advice is not a reason to purchase content that may already be included.
A practical order for choosing DLC
- Pick the exact game and platform. DLC names and ownership rules vary by game and storefront.
- Check what you already own. Compare your edition and library with the current base-game and add-on listings, including free updates.
- Try the base game or an official entry point first. If you are unsure which style of content you will enjoy, playing before buying can prevent a mismatched purchase.
- Choose by the experience you want. Look for a mechanics-focused expansion if you want new systems, a faction or leader pack if you want a particular playable option, or story and cosmetic content if those are your priorities.
- Compare bundles and prerequisites. Check what the bundle adds beyond your current library, whether it requires the base game, and whether the content is compatible with your platform and region.
How the advice differs by game
Stellaris: check the base-game inclusion first
Utopia was once the frequently cited first purchase for Stellaris, according to Paradox’s March 19, 2026 announcement. But the same announcement said Utopia, Synthetic Dawn, and Humanoids would be included in the base game from May 11, 2026. Since that date has passed, the useful first step is to verify what your current edition includes—not to treat an old DLC ranking as current advice. The Steam listing shows the range of available expansions, story packs, and species packs, as well as an expansion subscription; check the listing for current availability and platform-specific details.

Civilization VI: calculate overlap before upgrading
2K describes the Anthology Upgrade as a complete collection of Civilization VI content that upgrades the base game. Its listing names Rise and Fall, Gathering Storm, six DLC packs, the New Frontier Pass, and the Leader Pass. It requires the base game and warns owners of standalone content not to buy the upgrade because they may be charged twice. When accessed on October 7, 2026, the US storefront displayed $49.99; that is a volatile, region-specific price, not a lasting recommendation. Compare the listing with your own library and local store price before deciding. See 2K’s product page.
Total War: WARHAMMER: try a specific Lord before expanding your collection
SEGA Support’s FAQ, updated September 24, 2026, says a Lords of the End Times pack can be an entry point into Immortal Empires and suggests trying an individual Legendary Lord before buying more. It recommends Boris Todbringer to new players, while also noting that a suitable starting choice depends on play style. Ownership affects which races and Legendary Lords you can play; unowned factions can still appear as AI in the campaign. Content must be owned on the same platform. Read SEGA Support’s starting-point FAQ and its same-platform ownership guidance before buying.

When a bundle is—and is not—a good deal
A bundle is useful only if its contents are valuable to you and do not substantially duplicate what you own. Compare the bundle’s included content with your current library, confirm any base-game requirement, and check the final price in your region. Store warnings matter: Civilization VI’s Anthology Upgrade cautions against buying if you already own standalone content, while SEGA’s guidance makes platform ownership relevant for Total War: WARHAMMER.
For an undecided player, buying one add-on that matches a specific interest is often a more informative first step than purchasing a large collection on the assumption that more content is automatically better. If the store offers a suitable entry point or individual character pack, use that to test whether the added play style appeals to you.
