The main difference is the handoff: a human courier brings an order to the agreed delivery point, while a Coco robot carries it in a locked compartment and directs the customer to retrieve it using app instructions. Whether a robot is offered—and where it can meet you—depends on the delivery platform, restaurant, address, and local rules.
How a Coco robot delivery works
- Check whether it is offered. A robot option may appear only when the restaurant participates and the order and delivery location qualify. In Hoboken’s pilot, both the business and customer can decline robot delivery. Follow the choices shown in your delivery app.
- The restaurant loads the robot. Staff place the order inside the robot and close its lid. In the robot workflow, this handoff happens outside rather than being handed to a courier. That does not mean every conventional order requires restaurant staff to meet a courier in person.
- Track the order in the app. The robot travels to the delivery location. In Hoboken, customers track the order through the app and receive pickup instructions when it arrives. Exact notifications and unlocking steps depend on the platform.
- Retrieve the food. In Uber Eats’ described workflow, the compartment is securely locked and the intended customer unlocks it with a phone. Use the instructions for your order to find the robot and open the compartment.

What changes compared with a human courier?
| Part of delivery | Coco robot | Human courier |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Offered only for eligible orders, merchants, and locations where the service operates. | Depends on the delivery platform and merchant’s normal service options. |
| Restaurant handoff | Staff load the order into the robot outside and close the lid. | The order is handed to a courier; the sources do not establish that staff must meet the courier for every conventional order. |
| Customer handoff | The customer follows app instructions to locate and retrieve the order from the robot. | The courier brings the order to the delivery point agreed through the platform, subject to its instructions and local conditions. |
| Access to the order | Uber Eats describes a locked compartment opened by the intended customer using a phone; the exact sequence is platform-specific. | The order is handed over directly by the courier rather than retrieved from a robot compartment. |
| Building or unit access | Not established as a universal feature. Follow the location-specific app instructions. | Depends on the delivery instructions and what access is available at that address. |
Does Coco deliver to an apartment door?
There is no universal answer in the available official guidance. The sources describe sidewalk delivery, an outside restaurant handoff, and app-directed pickup, but do not establish that Coco robots can enter every apartment building, use elevators, or reach individual unit doors. Nor do they establish a universal ban on building access in every deployment. Check the pickup location and instructions shown for your order; do not assume the robot will reach your unit.
Where is Coco robot delivery available?
Availability is local and conditional, not a setting every customer can select. Coco says its service is integrated with platforms including Uber Eats, DoorDash, and Wolt. In a 2025 rollout announcement, DoorDash and Coco described US availability for eligible customers in Los Angeles and Chicago; the announcement also reported nearly 600 participating merchants and more than 100,000 DoorDash customer deliveries during the initial pilot phase. Those are company-reported figures, not an independent audit or a guarantee of current availability at a particular address.

For the UK, Coco and Deliveroo announced a phased launch beginning in Canary Wharf in October 2026, with Milton Keynes, Leeds, Stockton-on-Tees, and Nottingham among planned locations. Their October 5, 2026 announcement says rollout is phased and aligned with local regulations, with location-specific speed and routing policies; naming a city in that announcement does not establish that service is already live throughout it.

Does “autonomous” mean no people are involved?
No. Coco’s community page says its robots are remotely piloted by trained, vetted human operators, while Hoboken says robots in its municipal pilot operate under continuous remote supervision so trained operators can intervene. Separately, Coco’s February 2026 announcement describes Coco 2 as a next-generation autonomous robot and a shift from human-guided robotics toward full autonomy. These descriptions concern different claims and deployments; they do not establish one control arrangement for every robot everywhere.
Coco also says Coco 2 can deliver up to 50 percent faster than the prior generation. That is the company’s maximum comparison between robot generations, not evidence that robot delivery is faster than delivery by a human courier.

The cited sources do not provide a sound, general head-to-head result for robot versus human delivery speed, price, food quality, or courier earnings. The Coco 2 speed claim compares robot generations, not robots with couriers. For a specific order, use the price, estimated timing, and instructions displayed in the delivery app rather than assuming one handoff method is faster or cheaper.

- Monitor the app for the arrival notice and pickup location.
- Read the arrival instructions before heading out, especially if you live in a building or need an accessible handoff point.
- If the pickup point or access instructions will not work for you, choose another available delivery option if the app offers one.
