Old World is the closest historical starting point for Crusader Kings fans who want empire-building with dynasty and narrative elements. For other parts of the Crusader Kings experience, try Age of Wonders 4 for fantasy customization and tactical battles, Stellaris for a real-time space sandbox, or Shadow Empire for demanding political and economic simulation. Europa Universalis V is a neighboring grand-strategy option, not an uncomplicated 4X pick.
None of these games reproduces Crusader Kings’ defining feature: a house whose story continues through playable heirs. Paradox describes that lineage system in its Crusader Kings III overview. The best match depends on which other ingredients you want to keep: emergent stories, role-play, consequential decisions, or control of a growing realm.
Which 4X game is closest to Crusader Kings?
Old World: historical empire-building with dynasty and narrative
Start with Old World if you want the strongest overlap between historical empire management and dynasty-oriented storytelling. Wargamer includes it among its leading 4X games in its 2026 guide. Its appeal for this audience is the combination of empire-building with character and narrative elements, rather than a claim that it works like Crusader Kings in every respect.
Crusader Kings centers on a house and its playable heirs; Old World’s campaign and character systems are not identical to that lineage simulation. Choose it for a closer thematic fit, not as a substitute that preserves the same succession-focused play.

- EPIC 4X STRATEGY GAMEPLAY - Explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate your opponents to build your empire and prove your tactical prowess on the battlefield.
- IMMERSIVE HIGH-QUALITY MINIATURES - Bring your war to life with beautifully sculpted miniatures for your serfs, warriors, heroes, and flying & water vessels.
- BATTLE WITH STRATEGIC TACTICS - Engage in intense warfare using a hidden tactics card system, adding a layer of cunning and prediction to every conflict.
- EXPANDABLE FANTASY WORLD - The highly-regarded base game can be expanded with additional factions and modules, such as Order and Chaos, for even more replayability.
Age of Wonders 4: fantasy realms, customization, and tactical battles
Age of Wonders 4 is the best fit if you like shaping a world and watching decisions turn into campaign stories, but want fantasy and battles to take a larger role. Paradox describes it as a blend of 4X strategy and turn-based tactical combat. Its official description highlights creating a new realm in each game, story events, and a persistent saga in which creations can return as allies or rivals.
That gives it strong customization and narrative hooks, but its focus is not medieval family succession. The turn-based empire layer and separate tactical battles also make its pace and moment-to-moment play distinct from Crusader Kings.

- BIGGER, BETTER, AND NUKIER THAN EVER – Everything you love about Farms Race, now expanded for 2–5 players with the new Rabbit species. Adds fresh asymmetric mutations, extra chaos, and the same darkly strategic humor that made the original a blast.
- INCLUDES STANDARD EDITION CONTENT — AND MORE – Comes with everything from the Standard Edition plus an expansion’s worth of new material, upgraded components, and bonus goodies to supercharge your game.
- 8 NEW MUTATIONS, 6 NEW SPIES – More broken abilities, more authoritarian antics, and 3,400 % more ways to regret your alliances. Every game feels different, devious, and delightfully unpredictable.
- PREMIUM MAYHEM – Features a metal Current Player Token, wooden tokens, extra dice, a canvas bag, and two tuck boxes for sleeved cards (sleeves sold separately). All packed in a taller box with space for player mats (sold separately).
- THE DEFINITIVE EDITION – The original game plus a full expansion’s worth of new content and upgraded components in one box. If you think peace is overrated, this is your version of utopia.
Stellaris: a real-time space sandbox
Choose Stellaris for science fiction, real-time play, and an open-ended empire sandbox. Wargamer describes it as straddling 4X and grand strategy, with role-play as alien species, a galaxy-spanning setting, and story-rich downloadable content. It suits players drawn to exploration, empire management, and emergent events, but it does not carry over Crusader Kings’ feudal dynasty focus.
Shadow Empire: political relationships inside a deep simulation
Shadow Empire is the systems-heavy choice. Wargamer points to government bureaus and personal relationships with ministers as a point of similarity to Crusader Kings, alongside procedural worlds, population and economic management, logistics, and detailed warfare.

- 40 Unique Factions for Endless Replayability – Combine asymmetric faction cards to create powerful alliances and discover new tactical synergies in every playthrough.
- Engaging Technology Development – Research and unlock 9 distinct technologies to shape your empire’s strengths, specializations, and winning strategy.

- Deluxe Components in a Portable Box – Includes linen-finish cards, thick punchboard tokens, wooden pieces, player boards, and an updated rulebook — big game feel in a travel-friendly size.
Those overlapping political relationships do not make it a character-first dynasty game. Its appeal is the way political, economic, and military systems interact; choose it if that depth matters more than accessibility.
Is Europa Universalis V a 4X game?
Europa Universalis V is better treated as an adjacent historical grand-strategy option than as a straightforward 4X recommendation. GamesRadar+’s March 6, 2026 roundup says it released in 2025, describes it primarily as grand strategy while calling it functionally 4X, and flags its intimidating scale.

- Real scientific deduction: Use the companion app to survey for objects and apply logic rules to deduce Planet X's location like an actual astronomer conducting genuine cosmic investigation
- App-integrated gameplay: The free companion app randomizes object arrangements and Planet X location each game, ensuring fresh strategic challenges with procedural generation that guarantees replayability
- Strategic publishing system: Publish theories and conduct searches once you believe you've solved the puzzle, creating multiple decision points that reward careful observation and logical deduction

- Trusted designer pedigree: Created by acclaimed designers Ben Rosset and Matthew O'Malley with beautiful artwork, published by Renegade Game Studios, a respected name in modern strategy board games
It is worth considering if the part of Crusader Kings you value most is historical statecraft and alternate-history empire management. Its genre label is qualified, and the scale is a substantial commitment.

If you want succession to matter
Put Old World first on your list. It is the clearest dynasty-oriented lead among these options, but do not expect Crusader Kings’ house-and-heir structure to carry over unchanged.

If you want stories from decisions, not necessarily family trees
Consider Age of Wonders 4 for events and a persistent saga, Stellaris for a galaxy sandbox and events, or Shadow Empire for stories produced by political and military systems interacting. These offer different routes to emergent campaigns rather than a shared lineage mechanic.
If pacing matters as much as setting
Age of Wonders 4 is turn-based, with tactical battles; Stellaris runs in real time. Liking Crusader Kings alone does not indicate which cadence you will prefer. The cited descriptions do not establish a comparable turn-based or real-time cadence for every other game in this list.
If you want less abstraction and more systems
Shadow Empire is the clear high-complexity choice, and Europa Universalis V is also described as intimidating in scale. Age of Wonders 4 offers more immediately legible hooks in fantasy customization and tactical combat.
If the historical setting is essential
Old World and Europa Universalis V are the historical choices here, though they differ in how closely they map to 4X. Age of Wonders 4 is fantasy, Stellaris is science fiction, and Shadow Empire uses a procedurally generated future world.
How these games differ from Crusader Kings
Crusader Kings’ distinctive reference point is continuity through a ruling house and playable heirs. These recommendations match selected parts of its appeal—political relationships, role-play, narrative campaigns, or broad realm management—but none is established here as a replacement for that lineage simulation. A player seeking “a 4X / Grand Strategy Game” can narrow the field by deciding which of those elements matters most; that phrase also appears in an individual reader request, rather than serving as evidence of a broader trend.
