Choose a Mac desktop by starting with your setup: pick iMac if you want the computer and display together; consider Mac mini or Mac Studio if you want a separate computer connected to one or more external displays. Then match the exact model and configuration to your applications, memory and storage needs, displays, ports, and total setup cost. Apple’s lineup, checked October 7, 2026, includes iMac M4, Mac mini M6 and M5 Pro, and Mac Studio M5 Max and M5 Ultra. Apple’s Mac comparison page is the place to confirm current models.
Start with the kind of setup you want
iMac: computer and display together
An iMac is Apple’s all-in-one desktop, with a built-in display. It is the natural place to start if you want a single integrated desktop rather than choosing and connecting a separate monitor. Check the current iMac’s display and ports against your workspace and peripherals on Apple’s comparison page.
Mac mini or Mac Studio: a separate computer
Mac mini and Mac Studio connect to separate displays. This gives you the flexibility to use a screen you already own or select a display setup for your workspace, but the computer alone is not the whole setup. Include the cost and compatibility of displays and input devices when comparing options. Apple’s Mac mini technical specifications list the computer and power cord as box contents. Check the Mac mini specifications.
Match the configuration to your actual work
List the applications and the projects you use them for before choosing a chip tier. Large project files, demanding applications, and a workflow involving several displays can make configuration details important, but the specifications alone do not establish which Mac is fastest for a particular real-world task. Avoid choosing by a family name or assuming that a higher tier is necessary—or sufficient—without workload-specific evidence.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Memory and storage are purchase decisions to make up front. Apple’s 2026 Mac mini configurations are:
| Model | CPU and GPU | Starting memory and storage | Maximum listed memory and storage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mac mini M6 | 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU | 16GB unified memory, 256GB SSD | 32GB unified memory, 2TB SSD |
| Mac mini M5 Pro | 15-core CPU, 16-core GPU; an 18-core CPU/20-core GPU option is also listed | 24GB unified memory, 512GB SSD | 64GB unified memory, 8TB SSD |
These are Apple’s listed purchase configurations, not a promise that every combination is available in every market. Unified memory is not a later upgrade, so choose it based on your applications and workload. Confirm current options on Apple Support UK’s Mac mini (M6 or M5 Pro) specifications.

Compare Mac mini M6 and M5 Pro by requirements, not label
The M5 Pro Mac mini starts with more memory and storage than the M6 configuration, and Apple lists higher maximums for both. Their connectivity also differs: M6 has Thunderbolt 4, while M5 Pro has Thunderbolt 5. Both list HDMI, front USB-C, and Ethernet configurable to 10Gb Ethernet. These differences may matter for your peripherals, network, storage, or chosen displays; they do not by themselves prove that one model performs better for every application.
Apple lists up to three external displays for both variants, but supported resolution and refresh-rate combinations differ. Do not treat “up to three displays” as a guarantee for any particular set of monitors. Verify your exact display count, resolutions, refresh rates, and connection plan in the model-specific technical specifications.

Check displays, ports, and network before buying
Write down what you need to connect, then compare that list with the exact model’s specifications. Include every monitor, dock or adapter, external storage device, wired network connection, and other essential peripheral. For displays, check resolution and refresh rate as well as the number of screens; for network, confirm whether the listed Ethernet configuration meets your requirement.
Apple lists the Mac mini footprint as 5 by 5 inches, which may help if desk space is tight. Its compact size does not remove the need to plan for the display and input devices that a separate-computer setup requires. See Apple’s Mac mini technical details.

When to compare Mac Studio
Apple’s current desktop lineup also includes Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra. Compare those models if your requirements lead you beyond the Mac mini options, but base the decision on current configurations and reliable performance evidence for your specific applications. The available Apple lineup and specifications establish which models are listed; they do not establish benchmark-based thresholds for which professional workload requires a Mac Studio.

- Choose the form factor: decide whether you want an iMac’s built-in display or a separate computer paired with external displays.
- List your workload: note the applications, project sizes, and tasks you need the desktop to handle.
- Set memory and storage needs: choose a purchase configuration that fits your work and files; do not assume unified memory can be upgraded later.
- Map your displays: record screen count, resolution, and refresh rate, then verify the exact model supports that combination.
- Inventory connections: check the required ports, Ethernet, and peripherals against the model’s technical specifications.
- Calculate the full setup cost: for Mac mini or Mac Studio, include displays and input devices rather than comparing computer-only prices.
- Confirm availability and local pricing: check Apple’s current listing for your region before purchase; configurations, stock, and prices can change.
Apple’s lineup and specifications are useful for comparing configurations and compatibility, but they do not provide independent benchmarks, durability findings, repairability assessments, or application-specific recommendations. For performance-sensitive work, seek evidence that tests your actual workload and exact configuration.
