Switching internet providers does not automatically waive an early termination fee (ETF) owed to your current provider. First check your plan terms, then ask the provider to confirm in writing whether a fee applies to your account and whether your situation qualifies for an exception. Coordinate the replacement service, cancellation date, and equipment return before you close the account.
Check whether your plan has an early termination fee
Find your service agreement or order confirmation, latest bill, and the broadband label for your plan. Look for the contract end date, any term commitment, the ETF amount and calculation, trial or introductory-period terms, equipment obligations, and cancellation instructions. FCC broadband-label rules require covered providers to disclose contract length and any applicable ETF, with a link to more detail about when it applies. If the documents are unclear, ask your provider to confirm the account-specific terms in writing. Do not assume an example fee shown on a provider’s website is the fee for your account.

- Whether your account is under a term commitment and when it ends.
- The exact ETF, if any, for cancellation on your proposed date and how it is calculated.
- Whether a contract term or provider policy offers an exception for your reason for leaving.
- The cancellation effective date and how the final bill will be handled.
- Which equipment must be returned, the return method, and the deadline.
Record the response and keep a copy of any written fee explanation. Whether an exception applies depends on your provider, plan, contract, location, and circumstances.
Coordinate the new service and cancellation dates
Confirm that the replacement provider serves your address and get its activation or installation date before asking the old provider to cancel. Ask both providers how your proposed dates affect billing. A short overlap may reduce the chance of an internet gap, but you may pay both providers during that period; weigh that cost against the possibility of an interruption. There is no universal switching sequence or guaranteed same-day transfer.

When comparing replacement plans, use the broadband labels and provider terms to check the total monthly price after promotions, contract length and ETF, installation or activation charges, equipment terms, expected speed and data allowance, availability at your address, and installation timing. Cancel explicitly and keep a record
- Use the current cancellation channel specified by your provider and clearly request cancellation.
- Confirm the effective date and any final-billing details with the provider.
- Save the cancellation request and confirmation number. Note the date, representative, and any explanation of a fee or exception.

Return provider-owned equipment and verify the final bill
Follow the return instructions for your account; a modem, gateway, or other provider-owned equipment may trigger a separate non-return charge. Keep a list or photos of the items and save the drop-off or shipping receipt. Deadlines vary by provider, as these published examples show:

These are provider-specific examples, not universal return deadlines. Compare the final bill with your contract, written fee explanation, cancellation confirmation, and equipment receipt.
Provider policies and legal protections to check
AT&T Internet
AT&T’s published Internet cancellation policy says customers may cancel for any reason within 14 days of activation without an ETF, while remaining responsible for charges incurred. After 14 days, a customer with a term commitment may owe a prorated fee. The policy says the account owner should call with account information and a PIN, and sets equipment-return terms described above. Verizon Fios
The cited Verizon Fios agreement provides equipment-return terms, but those provisions may depend on the plan and account. Check the current agreement and the instructions supplied for your specific service. Verizon Fios Customer Agreement
Federal cancellation window for certain contracts
Federal law, 47 U.S.C. § 562, covers specified contract disclosures and provides a 24-hour period to cancel without early cancellation fees or other disconnection penalties after the provider sends the required contract copy for a covered contract. This provision is not established as applying to every broadband plan; check whether your contract and service fall within its scope. 47 U.S.C. § 562

State protections and individualized exceptions may also depend on your location and circumstances. If you need location-specific help, check with your state attorney general or relevant consumer-protection office.

If a final bill includes an ETF or non-return charge you believe is wrong, contact the provider with the contract, its written fee calculation, cancellation confirmation, and equipment receipt. Ask for the specific term supporting the charge and request a correction if the records do not support it.
