Ferromagnets have aligned magnetic moments and usually a net magnetic field; conventional antiferromagnets cancel opposing moments and usually have no net magnetization. Altermagnets also have compensated, opposite-spin order, but their crystal symmetry permits electronic bands to split by spin in a pattern that changes with momentum. That combination—not simply “stronger antiferromagnetism”—is what sets altermagnets apart.
How the three kinds of magnetism compare
| Feature | Ferromagnet | Conventional antiferromagnet | Altermagnet |
|---|---|---|---|
| Magnetic arrangement | Moments align in a common direction in the simple collinear picture. | Opposite-spin sublattices compensate one another. | Opposite-spin sublattices compensate one another, often in a collinear arrangement. |
| Net magnetization | Generally nonzero in the ordered state. | Zero in the ideal compensated state. | Zero by symmetry in the ideal compensated state. |
| Relationship between sublattices | In a simplified model, one principal magnetic sublattice has aligned moments. | In the conventional symmetry case, sublattices may be related by translation or inversion. | In defining examples, opposite-spin sublattices are related by a crystal operation such as rotation, rather than translation or inversion. |
| Characteristic electronic bands | Spin-split; in the basic comparison, the sign of spin polarization does not alternate with momentum. | Spin-degenerate in the conventional symmetry case. | Spin-split, with the sign of the splitting alternating across momentum space. |
This is an idealized comparison, not a rule that every material fits a textbook limit. Crystal symmetry, spin-orbit coupling, and effects such as canting can complicate a material’s magnetic structure and electronic bands. For the foundational comparison, see Šmejkal et al., “Emerging Research Landscape of Altermagnetism”.
What makes an altermagnet different from an antiferromagnet?
Both can have opposite-spin sublattices whose magnetic moments cancel. The difference lies in how those sublattices relate through the crystal’s symmetry and what that relationship allows in the electronic spectrum.
Conventional antiferromagnets
In the conventional symmetry case, opposite-spin sublattices are related by translation or inversion. The symmetry preserves the equivalence of opposite-spin electronic states, leaving the bands spin-degenerate.

Altermagnets
In an altermagnet, a crystal operation such as rotation relates the opposite-spin sublattices. The resulting symmetry permits spin-split bands even though the opposing magnetic moments compensate. The splitting varies with momentum and crystal direction: its sign alternates across momentum space rather than producing the simple, same-sign spin polarization used to describe a ferromagnet in the basic comparison.
The American Physical Society’s 2024 explanation puts the shared magnetic-order feature this way: “Like antiferromagnets, altermagnets have a net magnetization M of zero, which arises from the presence of two opposite-spin sublattices.” See “Altermagnetism Then and Now”.

How altermagnetism differs from ferromagnetism
In a ferromagnet’s simple ordered state, moments point in a common direction, producing a net magnetization. Its electronic bands are spin-split in the basic comparison, but do not have the altermagnet’s momentum-alternating pattern of spin polarization.
An altermagnet instead combines compensated magnetic order with spin-split electronic bands. Its net magnetization can be zero while its electrons still show a momentum-dependent spin pattern. A zero bulk magnetic moment therefore does not mean the electronic structure is spin-degenerate.

What has been observed, and what remains a research question?
A 14 February 2024 Nature News and Views by Carmine Autieri reported that two Nature papers presented experimental evidence of spin splitting in studied materials classified as altermagnets. This supports the presence of spin splitting in those materials; it does not establish every predicted feature in every proposed altermagnetic candidate. See “New type of magnetism splits from convention”.
Altermagnetism is a symmetry and electronic-structure classification, not a consumer product category. Researchers are investigating spin-dependent transport and other responses, including anomalous Hall effects, magneto-optical response, and tunneling magnetoresistance. A 2025 review of spin-polarized antiferromagnetic metals, first published online on 14 October 2024, discusses transport in this broader area, including collinear altermagnets: Shim et al., “Spin-Polarized Antiferromagnetic Metals”.

Why promising responses are not yet proof of a device
Potential device directions discussed by the APS include magnetic tunneling junctions, nano-oscillators, Josephson junctions, and qubits. These are research prospects, not established consumer technologies or proof of commercial implementations. The APS notes that confirming all predicted features in real materials remains a challenge. Domain control also matters: in a sample with multiple domains, contributions to an effect of interest may cancel.
The APS’s Physical Review Materials collection on altermagnetic and related materials summarizes a 2026 screening study by Sufyan et al. that screened 2,287 experimentally characterized magnetic structures and identified 180 robust altermagnets. This is a high-throughput screening result, not a count of commercially usable devices or universally confirmed altermagnets.
