Do not assume your internet service or account has changed just because a local ISP was acquired. Check the provider’s official transition notice, your authenticated account portal and latest bill, then confirm any account-specific changes with support using contact details from an existing bill or the provider’s known website.
First, distinguish the sale from changes to your account
An acquisition announcement, a legal transfer and a change to your broadband service can happen at different times—or not happen together at all. Look for whether the deal is proposed or completed, when any customer migration takes effect, and which customers or areas are affected.
For example, Ofcom said TalkTalk customers would remain customers during the sale process, with no immediate change to price, contract or billing access; it said affected customers would be contacted directly about future changes (Ofcom’s TalkTalk customer guidance, published 5 October 2026). TalkTalk separately said contracts transferred to TalkTalk Telecommunications Limited on 5 October 2026 while broadband service was not changing as a result of the transaction (TalkTalk’s acquisition FAQ). These are examples, not a prediction of what will happen with another ISP.
Check the official notice and your account
- Find the provider’s transition notice. Start from the ISP’s established website or app and navigate to its acquisition or customer-update page. Confirm the acquired provider, acquiring company, affected service area, transaction status and stated effective dates. Avoid relying on an unsolicited message or headline alone.
- Sign in through the known account portal. Check the provider and legal entity named on the account, account number, plan, price, contract dates, support details and payment instructions. Navigate to the portal from the provider’s known website or app rather than following a login link in an unexpected email or text.
- Compare the latest bill with the previous one. Look for a different bill issuer or payment portal, account number, due date, fees, or an explanation of a transfer. A new logo by itself does not establish that your service or payment arrangement changed. If something differs, ask who is collecting payment and whether your existing payment authorization remains valid.
- Ask support for account-specific confirmation. Use a phone number or email address on an existing bill or the provider’s official website. Ask which company currently provides your service, which legal entity holds your account, whether anything has transferred, the effective date, and where future bills and payments should go. Request written confirmation and keep it with your bills and notices.
Ask what is changing—not just who owns the ISP
Ownership does not, by itself, establish that your customer terms, network or equipment are changing. Ask about each item that matters to your account:

- Provider name and legal entity on the account
- Billing company, account number, payment method and due date

- Router or modem requirements and any setup appointment
- Landline, TV bundle and ISP-provided email address
Do not buy replacement equipment just because of an acquisition. Ofcom’s UK switching guidance says that when a customer is moving to a different network, the new provider should explain whether an engineer visit, new equipment or setup steps are needed; an acquisition alone does not show that you are switching networks (Ofcom’s broadband switching guidance).
Keep paying according to verified instructions
Do not change bank details, set up a new payment or use a payment link in an unexpected message until you have verified the instruction through the account portal or a trusted contact channel. Providers may handle billing transitions differently. Rightfiber tells customers to continue with their existing payment method and billing process until instructed otherwise (Rightfiber’s transition FAQ). SC Broadband’s TKS transition FAQ, in contrast, describes a planned move to its billing system from a stated billing date and says bill-ready email notices would be sent (SC Broadband’s TKS transition FAQ). Follow the authenticated, account-specific instructions for your own service, not either example as a general rule.

Check bundled services and local rights
If your account includes landline, TV or an email address supplied by the ISP, ask separately whether each service remains available and what its continuity terms are. Ofcom notes that policies for keeping an email address from an old broadband provider vary, and some providers charge for continued access after a switch (Ofcom’s switching guidance).
Consumer protections depend on your country and the type of transaction. Ofcom’s switching advice applies to UK broadband switching; it should not be treated as a universal rule for other jurisdictions. Consult the regulator and contract relevant to your location if a notice conflicts with your terms or you cannot get a clear answer. A historical FCC order addressed notices in a particular carrier-transfer context; it does not establish a universal notice rule for every local broadband acquisition (FCC order).
