Listen separately for fit to the intended variety, consistent pronunciation and rhythm, intelligibility, dramatic effectiveness, and the social meaning the accent carries. A listener’s impression matters, but it is not a complete or objective test of accent accuracy.
Start with the character and the performance brief
Before deciding whether an accent sounds authentic, establish what the performance is meant to convey: the character’s place and community, language history, and role in the story. A broad label such as “British” or “American” may not be specific enough to judge against. If the game or its creators provide a more precise locale or character background, use that as your reference. Without one, describe your impression as a listener rather than presenting it as a definitive verdict.
Preparation and direction can shape what reaches the player. In a Capcom account about localizing The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, localization director Janet Hsu describes sharing information about the game and characters with actors and the voice director before recording, as well as selecting and reviewing takes. She also discusses how remote recording could make small inflections and recording artifacts harder to hear. This is one production account, not a description of how every game is made.
Listen for specific, repeatable speech choices
Move from a broad impression to audible details. Notice pronunciation, rhythm, and intonation: which sounds stand out, where stress falls, and how the voice moves through a phrase. Then listen across more than one line, if available. A deliberate performance may be selective or stylized; consistency means the choices feel purposeful across the role, not that every sound must match a single template.

Keep what you hear separate from what you assume. “The vowels sound closer to one variety in this line” identifies an observation; “the actor cannot do the accent” turns a limited impression into a broad claim. One line may be affected by emotion, delivery, editing, or the recording conditions.
A small 2019 study by Remco Knooihuizen examined three Australian actors performing American English for television. Their second-dialect speech was less stable and more variable than their native speech, and judges rated it slightly less American than native-speaker controls. The study illustrates that acoustic adaptation and listener judgments do not always align; its small, television-focused sample is not a universal benchmark for game performances. Judge accent, clarity, and acting as separate dimensions
A useful evaluation keeps several questions distinct instead of collapsing them into “good” or “bad.”
- Fit: Does the speech suit the character’s stated background and the adaptation’s apparent intent?
- Accent choices: Are pronunciation, rhythm, and intonation recognizable and coherent across the material you heard?
- Intelligibility: Can you follow the dialogue in the scene? Clarity is not the same thing as sounding native to a particular place.
- Dramatic performance: Does the actor communicate the scene’s emotion, intention, and character relationships?
- Overall coherence: Does the voice feel integrated with the role and the game’s localization?
These are practical questions, not a validated scoring instrument. A compelling emotional performance does not by itself establish accent accuracy; an isolated pronunciation slip does not erase effective acting. Explain which dimension supports your judgment rather than using one to stand in for another.

Ask what the accent signals in the game world
Accents help build fictional places and can prompt players to make inferences about a character. Game scholarship has examined how accents contribute to players’ understanding of the world and social themes in Dragon Age: Inquisition, as well as associations linking accents with traits such as class, education, ethnicity, and trustworthiness. Those associations are material for analyzing a game’s storytelling; they are not reliable truths about real speakers.
Ask what the game invites the audience to infer and whether the character reinforces or complicates that inference. Is an accent giving the character a specific history and identity, or acting as a quick signal that they are untrustworthy, unintelligent, or socially inferior? A performance can be linguistically recognizable while still relying on a reductive narrative shorthand.

Voice and dialect coach Adriano Cabral has warned that accent work without appropriate research can become stereotyping or cultural appropriation. That concern is especially relevant when a portrayal borrows recognizable speech features from a real community. Consider who is represented, how much specificity the role receives, and what the story does with the social meanings it invokes. Cabral discusses dialect coaching and representation in Backstage.

A game voice is not always experienced as an isolated recording. It may be combined with facial and movement performances, heard during gameplay, or shaped by a particular language version’s adaptation. When those elements are available, consider how the voice works with them. If you are judging only a voice clip, say that your assessment is limited to the audio rather than treating it as a verdict on the complete performance.

Localization also means that two language versions may serve different adaptation briefs. If you compare performances, make clear whether they are intended to portray the same background in the same way. Otherwise, a ranking may mistake a deliberate adaptation choice for an accent failure.
SAG-AFTRA’s Independent Interactive Localization Agreement describes terms for certain video-game projects localized into a language other than English, including session and voiceprint options and AI protections. It explains aspects of the work and contract; it is not an artistic standard for judging accents. Contract applicability and terms can change, so consult SAG-AFTRA for authoritative guidance.
Compare two performances without flattening the differences
For a comparison, use the same scene or role when possible and assess each performance on its own terms before ranking them. The following axes are a practical framework, not a standardized scorecard:
- Character and locale fit: Compare each performance with its stated brief, not with a vague idea of neutral speech.
- Audible choices: Note pronunciation and prosody, then check whether they remain coherent across the material available.
- Intelligibility in context: Consider whether the dialogue is understandable in the actual scene.
- Dramatic specificity: Assess how well each actor communicates the character and moment.
- Social meaning: Examine the identity or status cues the performance and story create, including stereotype risks.
- Integration: Consider how the voice fits the localization and, where available, the broader performance.
If the performances reflect different adaptation briefs, state that before choosing a favorite. You can still explain which one works better for you, but the comparison should not pretend the two actors were given identical goals.
