Game dialogue becomes playable through a hand-off between writing, performance, audio files, and game logic. Developers prepare lines with stable identities and performance context, record and review actors’ takes, connect the selected audio to dialogue data and runtime behavior, then verify subtitles and localized versions in the game. The exact tools vary by studio and engine: Unreal documents dialogue-specific assets, while the cited Unity audio documentation covers playback building blocks rather than a complete branching-dialogue system.
What happens between a written line and dialogue in the game?
A spoken line is both a performance and a production asset. It needs to be clear enough for an actor to perform, identifiable enough for a team to track, and connected to the right character and game situation so the game can play it when appropriate.
- Prepare the line. Keep the text with its speaker, scene or conversation, and useful character and delivery context. For branching or reactive dialogue, track the line’s relationship to the conditions that make it available.
- Record and review the performance. Give actors direction, capture takes, and review the results before selecting the audio that will be used.
- Organize and implement the audio. Use consistent line and filename conventions to hand audio from recording into the engine and associate it with the right dialogue data.
- Test it in context. Check playback and subtitles in the build, including whether the correct line plays for the relevant character and situation.
- Localize and re-import where needed. Translation, adapted performances, localized audio, subtitle updates, and renewed testing form a connected production cycle.
This is a practical workflow, not a universal studio standard. Teams may build conversation management in their engine or use project-specific tools. Epic’s Unreal documentation describes dedicated dialogue assets; the cited Unity 6.7 Beta overview describes general audio features, not a full dialogue-authoring workflow.
How should dialogue be prepared for recording?
Give each line identity and context
Keep each line associated with a speaker and, where relevant, its scene or conversation and the conditions for using it. A stable identifier helps the writing, recording, and implementation work refer to the same line. There is no single line-ID scheme established by the cited documentation, so a team should choose one that fits its own tools and keep it consistent.

Actors also need more than text. Character information, scene context, and delivery notes help explain what a line means and how it should sound. Epic’s Unreal tutorial includes a Voice Actor Direction field for recording different deliveries toward different listeners. Microsoft’s game-localization guidance recommends supplying localization teams with materials such as scripts, character biographies, walkthroughs, style guides, and, where possible, game builds.
Finalize text as much as practical
Late changes can ripple from writing into performance and implementation. Microsoft advises making a character’s lines as complete and final as possible before that character’s voice recording begins, because repeated small recording sessions can cost more than fewer, larger sessions. This is a production recommendation, not a guarantee that scripts will never change.
Settle file naming before the session
Agree on line names and audio filenames before recording. Epic’s Unreal Engine 5.8 asset-localization documentation says to decide the dialogue filename format before recording because changing it later is difficult. Its dialogue sheet uses an AudioFileName field to specify the expected WAV filename for each culture. A consistent convention helps connect the written line to the recorded and imported file.

How are voice lines recorded and reviewed?
Once the script and naming conventions are ready, actors perform the lines under direction. The production team reviews takes and assigns the chosen recordings to the corresponding dialogue context. The cited documentation supports directed performance and review, but it does not prescribe a universal microphone, recording-room setup, original-language file format, or take-management system.
Performance may need to change with the listener or situation. A line delivered to a close ally may need a different tone from the same character speaking to an enemy; recording and implementation plans should preserve those distinctions when the game uses them. Unreal’s tutorial demonstrates different actor direction for different listeners, but the specific way a team records or stores variations is project-dependent.
How does Unreal Engine connect dialogue to characters?
Dialogue Voices and Dialogue Waves
In the Unreal Engine 5.4 tutorial, a Dialogue Voice represents a character’s voice, and a Dialogue Wave represents a spoken line with speaker and listener context and an associated Sound Wave. The tutorial shows adding voice assets to character Blueprints, creating a Dialogue Wave for a line, setting its context and delivery notes, assigning recorded Sound Waves, and triggering playback from Blueprint logic when an interaction occurs.

This connects a line’s audio to the situation in which it belongs. A Dialogue Wave is not, by itself, the whole branching conversation: Epic’s documentation explicitly notes that Dialogue Waves are not a full dialogue or conversation system. Longer conversations need a conversation-management layer to control their flow.
Subtitles and the active context
In the tutorial’s example, subtitles are enabled by default but will not appear unless a Sound Wave is set for the active context. Unreal Engine 5.8’s asset-localization documentation also describes Dialogue Waves as holding spoken text and optional subtitle overrides, and says the assets are gathered through the standard localization pipeline. Test the configured audio context and subtitle behavior in the build rather than assuming that attaching text alone will display it.

Those are audio capabilities, not evidence of a built-in branching conversation editor or a voice-over production workflow. In particular, microphone access through a game engine API should not be mistaken for the standard way professional character dialogue is recorded. A Unity project may use its own conversation tools and logic; the cited overview does not prescribe them.
How do the documented Unreal and Unity approaches differ?
| Area | Unreal Engine documentation | Unity documentation |
|---|---|---|
| Documentation cited | Dialogue tutorial version 5.4; asset-localization guidance version 5.8 (Epic Games). | Audio overview for Unity 6.7 Beta. |
| Dialogue-specific assets | Dialogue Voice represents a character voice; Dialogue Wave represents a line with speaker/listener context and associated Sound Wave. | Audio Clips and Audio Sources are documented; a native branching-dialogue authoring system is not established by the cited overview. |
| Runtime playback | The tutorial demonstrates triggering playback from Blueprint logic; longer conversation flow needs a conversation-management layer. | Clips can be assigned to Audio Sources or used from scripts; the cited overview does not describe conversation-flow tooling. |
| Localization hand-off | Dialogue sheets, per-culture WAV naming, localized audio import, and subtitle-related asset handling are documented. | Not stated in the cited Unity audio overview. |
This is a comparison of the cited documentation, not an engine ranking. When choosing or building a workflow, consider how the project will author branches and game-state conditions, represent speaker and listener context, connect subtitles and localized assets, review iteration, and provide any conversation-management tools that are not covered by the engine’s audio features.

Translate and record as a connected cycle
Epic’s Unreal localization workflow starts with native dialogue set for each line, records and optionally copy-edits it, translates the native text, records and optionally copy-edits the localized dialogue, and re-imports localized audio so subtitles reflect the final dialogue. If the native text changes during this process, Unreal says the workflow is expected to restart at its first step.

Unreal’s utilities can export per-culture dialogue sheets from assets. The SpokenDialogue field supports copy-edits, while AudioFileName specifies localized WAV filenames. Recorded audio is placed in a culture folder and imported into the correct Dialogue and Sound Wave assets. Follow the project’s conventions so localized files are connected to the intended lines and culture.
Plan for adaptation and context
Localization can involve more than translating a script. Microsoft’s game-localization guidance describes work that may include adaptation, casting, directing, lip-syncing, and duration constraints. Localization teams may not have the original development context, so provide character information and other relevant documentation and consider checking each localized version in context.
Cutscenes can have additional requirements: Microsoft recommends supplying video alongside source audio and script, with voice, effects, and background tracks provided separately for remixing. This advice is relevant where the game’s dialogue is part of cutscene audio, rather than a requirement for every in-game line.
