Connect one Deco to your modem or Ethernet outlet, configure it in the Deco app, and add the remaining units to the same network. Then place each satellite where it still receives a strong connection from the mesh: check its signal in the app and move it if needed. If you plan to use Ethernet backhaul, complete wireless setup first and follow the wiring rules for your Deco’s operating mode.

Before you start

Find the model name of each Deco and consult its matching quick installation guide if the app prompts or LED behavior differ from the steps below. Ports and setup details vary by model. Have the Deco app, the supplied power adapters, and an Ethernet cable ready.

Decide whether the main Deco will act as your router or whether the system will operate in Access Point mode behind an existing router. This affects where you can connect satellite units if you later use Ethernet backhaul.

Set up the main Deco and add the other units

  1. Connect the main Deco. If your internet comes from a modem, connect the modem to the main Deco with Ethernet. If an Ethernet wall outlet provides the internet connection directly, connect that outlet to the Deco instead.
  2. Power it on and open the Deco app. Follow the app’s prompts to configure the internet connection and create the Wi-Fi network and credentials. The exact screens can vary by model and app version. TP-Link describes the modem or wall-outlet connection and app-led configuration in its Deco setup guidance.
  3. Add the remaining Decos in the app. Add each unit to the same network and choose useful location labels, such as “Office” or “Upstairs.” Put the units in provisional locations first; you can reposition them after checking their connections.

Place satellites where they can connect reliably

A satellite needs a usable link to the rest of the Deco network. Do not assume that a particular room-to-room distance will work: walls, floors, building materials, and interference all affect the connection.

Check the signal in the app

For a wireless satellite, check its connection quality after placing it. TP-Link’s placement guide describes the path Network > Everything looks good > select the satellite and recommends a reading of two bars. Menu names may change with the app version. If the reading is weaker, move the satellite closer to the source Deco or to a more open spot, then check again. See TP-Link’s Deco Placement Guide.

Choose an open, elevated spot

TP-Link recommends placing units at about the same height as the source Deco and gives 1–1.5 feet off the floor as an ideal height. Keep them in an open area, away from walls and metal objects. Treat the height as a starting point, not a guarantee that a location will work in every home.

TP-Link Deco S4 Mesh AC1900 WiFi System, Deco S4(3-Pack)
  • A New Way to WiFi: Deco Mesh technology gives you a better WiFi experience in all directions with faster WiFi speeds and strong WiFi signal to cover your whole home.
  • Better Coverage than traditional WiFi routers: Deco S4 three units work seamlessly to create a WiFi mesh network that can cover homes up to 5, 500 square feet. No dead zone anymore.
  • Seamless and Stable WiFi Mesh: Rather than wifi range extender that need multiple network names and passwords, Deco S4 allows you to enjoy seamless roaming throughout the house, with a single network name and password.
  • Incredibly fast 3× 3 6 Stream AC1900 speeds makes the deco capable of providing connectivity for up to 100 devices.
  • With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.

Keep Decos away from devices and appliances that may interfere with 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, including microwaves, Bluetooth devices, and USB 3.0 devices. If a spot gives a poor app reading, try another location rather than relying on the height or room alone.

Use distance as a rule of thumb, not a guarantee

TP-Link Canada recommends no more than 50 feet between units for best wireless performance, but says actual range depends on environmental conditions, including building materials, floors, walls, and interference. This is a manufacturer guideline, not a universal maximum or a promise of coverage. Ethernet backhaul allows more flexible distances because the node-to-node connection no longer depends on wireless relaying. See TP-Link Canada’s Deco range and placement guidance, last updated May 8, 2026.

As TP-Link’s placement guide puts it, “TP-Link Deco placement is not an exact science, and you may need to experiment with different locations for your satellite Deco units to find what works best in your home.”

Choose wireless or Ethernet backhaul

Backhaul What it means When it fits
Wireless Decos relay network traffic between units over Wi-Fi. Use it when you do not have Ethernet wiring between suitable locations. Check the satellite’s app signal and adjust its position as needed.
Ethernet A cable carries traffic between wired Decos. TP-Link describes Ethernet backhaul as faster and more stable than wireless backhaul between nodes. When the wired link is detected, the wireless backhaul between those particular units disconnects; unwired satellites can still use wireless backhaul. Use it when Ethernet is available and you want a wired node-to-node connection. Complete initial wireless setup before connecting the cable.

TP-Link says Ethernet backhaul activates automatically when a wired link is detected. The precise ports available depend on the Deco model, so check its guide before planning the cable layout. TP-Link’s Ethernet backhaul guidance covers setup and wiring rules.

Wire Ethernet backhaul according to operating mode

Router mode

Connect a satellite Deco to a LAN port on the main Deco, or to a switch connected to that LAN port. Do not connect satellites to the upstream modem or router—or to a switch in front of the main Deco. TP-Link warns that bypassing the main Deco this way can create a network loop.

Access Point mode

In Access Point mode, TP-Link says satellite Decos can connect to any Deco or to the main router. Check your model’s guide for the available ports and confirm the operating mode before wiring.

Adding more Decos is not always better

More units do not automatically improve throughput or stability; a poorly positioned or unnecessary node can fail to solve a coverage problem. TP-Link Australia says many networks using Wi-Fi or PLC backhaul are recommended for up to six units, with exceptions for specified models and wired or hybrid configurations. This is model-dependent guidance, not a universal limit. Check the support information for your particular system before adding units. See TP-Link Australia’s Deco unit-count guidance, last updated April 17, 2026.

Quick placement and setup checklist

  • The main Deco is connected to the modem or internet-providing Ethernet outlet, and its network has been configured in the app.
  • Every additional unit has been added to the same network.
  • Wireless satellites show a usable app signal; move and recheck any weak connection.
  • Decos are in open locations, away from walls, metal, and likely sources of interference.
  • Any Ethernet backhaul is connected only after initial setup and follows the wiring rules for Router or Access Point mode.
  • You have checked your model’s guidance before adding units or choosing ports.
