A streaming service being bought does not automatically cancel your subscription or immediately change its price, app, or library. What happens next depends on the service’s official transition notices, its terms, and—crucially—who bills you. Check those details before canceling or signing up again.
What a change in ownership means for your subscription
An ownership change alone does not tell you whether your access, plan, or billing will change. A service may continue operating as before, transfer subscriptions to a new owner, or move subscribers to another product under specific eligibility rules. The terms and instructions for your service and billing route determine what applies to you.
For example, the HBO Max Help Center FAQ about Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Skydance coming together as Skydance said there were no immediate changes to the HBO Max or Paramount+ apps, subscriptions, pricing, content, or access. It said subscribers could keep using the services as before and did not need to take action at that time. The FAQ also said it would be updated as information became available, so its statement describes the status at the time of the update—not a guarantee about future plans. The same FAQ said there were no immediate plans to bundle the services, combine their libraries, or introduce a new app. Treat those as the FAQ’s then-current status, not a prediction.

What can change—and what may stay the same
Access and the app
Access might continue without immediate action, transfer under a transition plan, or end on a date specified in a notice. A transfer can depend on how you subscribed. The discovery+ Terms of Use, for example, allow the provider to assign or transfer the agreement and subscription to an entity acquiring ownership or control of the platform. That is a service-specific contract provision, not a rule that applies to every service. See the discovery+ Terms of Use.
Price and renewal
A new owner does not necessarily change your price immediately. Paramount+’s US Terms of Use allow price changes with notice; under those terms, a change does not take effect during the current billing period and applies at renewal. If a third party bills you, its terms may govern price changes instead. Check your notice and account for the effective date rather than assuming the new price starts when ownership changes. Catalog and content rights
Continued access does not guarantee that every show or film will remain available. discovery+ says its content changes regularly and may be withdrawn or become unavailable when rights-holders restrict or withdraw rights. An ownership transition and content availability are separate questions: check the service’s update for transition details and its catalog for what is currently offered. Billing and cancellation
If you pay through an app store, streaming channel, bundle, or other third party, the service may not control your billing or cancellation. Hulu says third-party subscribers are billed by that provider and must follow its cancellation instructions; where terms conflict on purchase, billing, cancellation, refunds, or payment, the third party’s terms control. Paramount+ likewise directs subscribers billed through a third party, affiliate, or another service to that provider for cancellation or payment-method changes. Why your billing route matters: the SHOWTIME transition
A past transition shows why one subscriber’s instructions may not work for another. SHOWTIME discontinued its standalone streaming service and made its programming available through Paramount+ with SHOWTIME. Its help center said some subscribers billed directly by SHOWTIME, Roku, or Apple were eligible for automatic transfer, while people subscribed through certain other channels were told to contact their provider. Subscribers not eligible for transfer were advised to cancel the old subscription before starting another, to avoid overlapping charges. See SHOWTIME’s transition FAQ.
What to do if your streaming service is sold
- Find the official update. Check the service’s website or app and read any email or in-app notice. Look for whether your plan continues, transfers, or ends—and whether action is required by a deadline.
- Identify who bills you. Check your subscription settings, payment statement, or the account where you originally signed up. If a third party bills you, use that provider’s account controls and instructions for billing or cancellation.
- Check your next renewal date. Compare it with any stated change date. Confirm whether a new price applies immediately, at renewal, or only if you accept a replacement plan.
- Compare the plan you have with the one offered. Check access, price, renewal, app, content, and any bundle or feature changes. Look for whether the transition is automatic or requires you to accept, cancel, or contact a provider.
- Wait before starting a replacement subscription. First confirm whether your current plan will transfer or continue; otherwise, you could pay for overlapping subscriptions.
- Save the notice and review the applicable terms. Check cancellation and refund provisions before acting. An ownership change does not establish that every subscriber has the same cancellation or refund rights.
Which rules apply to you?
The cited agreements illustrate different service and billing arrangements; they do not establish one rule for all subscribers. The examples include US-facing Hulu and Paramount+ terms, and your country, plan, and billing provider may affect the terms and rights that apply. Use the notice sent to your account and the terms for your specific subscription route.
