What “final Android update” means for a Galaxy S23
There are two separate milestones: the last major Android-version upgrade and the end of security maintenance. A phone can stop receiving new Android versions while continuing to receive security patches. Samsung’s Knox supported-device listing gives the Galaxy S23, S23+, and S23 Ultra an OS update guarantee through Android 17 and a security-maintenance guarantee through January 2028. These are Samsung’s stated support commitments, not a promise that every carrier or regional variant receives each patch on the same day.
Samsung’s Knox documentation also says its solutions support the latest five major Android versions. Devices running older Android versions are not automatically removed from Knox services, but Samsung teams will not provide issue support for those devices. That policy concerns Knox service support; it does not mean the phone stops working or every app ceases to function when major Android upgrades end. What Samsung’s current update records show
As of October 7, 2026, Samsung’s update history for the international Galaxy S23 model SM-S911B lists build S911BXXSAFZI1, Android 16, a release date of September 30, 2026, and a security patch level dated September 5, 2026. This is evidence for that model’s record—not a universal update date for every S23. Samsung cautions that exact changes may differ by device model, country, and service provider. Samsung currently includes the S23 family in its monthly security-update group. Its general policy also recognizes quarterly and biannual schedules for selected devices, and says patch delivery timing varies by region and model. How to decide whether to keep yours
Keep using it if support and condition are acceptable
Keeping the S23 is reasonable if your exact phone is still receiving security patches, its hardware is dependable, and it runs the apps and services you need. Install available system and app updates, use a screen lock, and protect the accounts connected to the phone. A lack of new Android versions alone is not a reason to assume the device is unsafe today.

Check your own model’s patch status
- Open Settings on the phone and review its software information and security patch level.
- Identify the exact model and market or carrier variant; the SM-S911B update history is specific to that model.
- Compare the phone’s status with Samsung’s update history and current security-update scope for the relevant variant. A listed schedule is not proof that a particular carrier has delivered a patch on a particular date.
- Install any available system update and check again periodically, since Samsung’s schedules and support listings can change.
Plan a replacement when support or reliability no longer works for you
Start comparing replacements if your variant has fallen out of its applicable security-update program, the phone has become unreliable, or it no longer meets app, work, or security requirements. People covered by workplace or organizational rules should follow those rules rather than assume a general consumer support listing satisfies them.

Do not make the decision solely on the Android version number. Compare the S23’s remaining support for your exact variant, its reliability and battery condition, the apps and policies you must meet, and the cost and remaining support period of a replacement. Samsung lists the Galaxy S24 among its monthly-update models, making it one documented newer Galaxy option; that classification does not establish its current price, stock, or value compared with other phones. Samsung’s Knox supported-device listing contains its device classifications.
