After a major One UI update, first confirm which software version is installed, then check the changes most likely to affect daily use: the notification and Quick settings gestures, Home screen and app navigation, privacy controls, battery activity, and any new tools you want to use. The steps below use One UI 7 as the example; menus and features can vary by Galaxy S23 model, carrier, region, and installed version.
Confirm what installed on your Galaxy S23
Before following version-specific steps, check your phone’s software details. Open Settings > About phone > Software information and note the One UI version, Android version, and software build. Review the update’s summary or history as well, so you know which changes were included.
To check whether another update is available, go to Settings > Software update > Download and install. Labels or an extra confirmation step can differ by device and carrier. Samsung lists the Galaxy S23 series for One UI 7, but carrier-locked rollout timing can differ from unlocked devices. See Samsung Canada’s One UI 7 guide for its version paths and rollout details.
Choose how Notifications and Quick settings open
One UI 7 separates the two panels by default. Swipe down from the upper-left of the screen to open Notifications; swipe down from the upper-right to open Quick settings. If you prefer the combined view used in earlier layouts, you can switch to it.

- Swipe down from the upper-right to open Quick settings.
- Tap Edit, then Panel settings.
- Under Notification and quick settings view, choose Together.
Samsung notes that an intermediate menu or label may differ on some phones. Its One UI 7 guide explains the separated gestures and combined-panel option. Keep the split if reaching each panel with a separate gesture suits you; choose Together if one combined panel feels more familiar.
Check the Home screen and app drawer
After updating, look over the Home screen and app drawer rather than assuming the layout stayed the same. Check whether widgets still fit, icons are where you expect them, and app search is easy to find. One UI 7 refreshes the Home screen, and the app-list layout can feel different.

In the Apps screen, review the sort setting if scrolling behavior has changed. With alphabetical sorting, apps scroll vertically; a custom app order remains horizontal. If you want a different arrangement, use the Apps screen layout and sort options available on your phone. Samsung’s One UI 7 guide describes these layout changes.
Review privacy and security controls
Check app access and lock-screen visibility
Review which apps can use sensitive permissions such as location, microphone, camera, and contacts, and remove access that an app no longer needs. Also check whether lock-screen notifications reveal message content or other private information. Adjust those choices to match how you use the phone and where it is usually visible.

Check available theft protections
Samsung describes One UI 7 protections including Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, and Remote Lock. Identity Check is an opt-in feature. Availability can depend on market, software version, and model, so look in your security settings to see what your S23 actually offers rather than assuming every option is present. Samsung’s One UI 7 theft-protection announcement sets out those caveats.
Use Maintenance mode before a repair
If you are handing the phone to a repair provider, consider enabling Maintenance mode first. Samsung says it prevents access to personal data such as pictures, messages, and accounts. Find the current control through Settings search or Samsung’s device guidance; its availability and menu path may depend on the phone’s software. Samsung’s security and Maintenance mode support page includes details, though some of its material concerns One UI 5.1.1 rather than a feature newly introduced in One UI 7.

Inspect battery activity and troubleshoot real problems
Use Samsung’s device-care battery tools to review usage and identify apps consuming power. Check whether a recent installation, background activity, or a setting you changed explains an observed difference. Apply Power saving or adjust app behavior only when it helps your needs; an update does not necessarily cause battery drain, and a single setting is not a guaranteed fix.
If you have a persistent battery, installation, or performance problem, follow Samsung’s device-care guidance and the applicable troubleshooting steps for your installed software. Find optional One UI 7 tools that suit your use
Use the Settings search field or the on-device user manual to find features available on your particular phone. Samsung describes One UI 7 tools such as Now Bar, AI Select, Writing Assist, Auto Trim, Drawing Assist, and Audio Eraser. They are optional, and availability or requirements can vary by model, language, account setup, and network connection. Check the feature’s own description before enabling or relying on it.
Samsung says Settings search can also be used instead of voice search: “If you’re not a fan of voice search, you can use the same upgraded search feature by going into Settings, tapping the magnifying glass search icon, and navigating the smartened-up results from there.” See Samsung Newsroom U.S.’s One UI 7 feature overview and Samsung Canada’s guide; check your S23 directly because Samsung does not provide a complete availability matrix for every model, carrier, and country.
