Final Fantasy VII Remake does not retell the whole 1997 game in one release. It expands the story’s Midgar section through the party’s escape from the city, reimagines the gameplay with real-time action and command-based combat, and draws on characters and lore from across the wider Final Fantasy VII universe. Intergrade is the enhanced edition, and it includes a separate Yuffie-led episode.
Does Final Fantasy VII Remake cover the whole original game?
No. Final Fantasy VII Remake is the first standalone game in a larger remake project. Its story runs through the party’s escape from Midgar, rather than covering the original game from beginning to end. Square Enix says the remake goes deeper into events in Midgar than the 1997 original, expanding that part of the story as its own game.
The shared premise remains recognizable: Cloud Strife, a former SOLDIER operative turned mercenary, joins Avalanche’s resistance against Shinra in Midgar. The difference is that this release gives the Midgar events much more room, while the larger project continues the story beyond the city.
Is Remake the same story, or a reimagining?
It is best understood as an expanded reimagining, not a scene-for-scene reproduction. Director Naoki Hamaguchi has said the remake trilogy incorporates storylines and lore from spin-offs and other titles in the wider Final Fantasy VII universe, rather than drawing only on the original game.

“One thing we set out to do in terms of the story we’re telling in the remake trilogy was to not just focus on the original game’s story but to include storylines and lore from the spin-offs and other titles that make up the wider FINAL FANTASY VII universe.”
That framing establishes the project’s broader creative scope, but it does not mean every scene or character has changed. The available official descriptions do not provide a complete scene-by-scene list of differences, so claims about specific plot divergences should be treated separately from the confirmed scope and approach.

How is the combat different?
The original uses a classic command-driven RPG format. Square Enix describes Remake’s battle system as combining real-time action with strategic, command-based combat. In other words, it presents battles more actively while retaining a tactical command element.
This is a high-level comparison, not a full account of every mechanic. The official overview does not establish a one-to-one mapping of menus, turn timing, or individual abilities between the two games.

What does Intergrade add?
Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is the visually enhanced edition of Remake. It also includes FF7R Episode INTERmission, a separate adventure starring Yuffie Kisaragi. She infiltrates Midgar and works with Avalanche HQ in an effort to steal materia from Shinra.
Director Naoki Hamaguchi describes INTERmission as serving several story purposes: bringing Yuffie into the remake project, connecting Remake and Rebirth, and introducing wider franchise lore such as Deepground. He also says the episode makes characters who were optional party members in the original more integral to the trilogy, with Yuffie’s story designed to put her on a collision course with Cloud and the others.
