Use the package directions for your specific rice whenever they are available: water amounts vary by variety, brand and cooking method. For stovetop cooking, a University of Utah Education Network handout gives these example ratios, measured by volume: 1 cup of white basmati to 1¾ cups water, 1 cup of brown basmati to 2½ cups, and 1 cup each of jasmine or long-grain brown rice to 2 cups water. These are starting examples, not universal rules.
Stovetop water ratios by rice type
The table lists rice first and water second. Each amount is measured by volume and comes from the Utah Education Network handout; use the package directions if they differ.

How much water for one cup of rice?
For a general starting point, University of Maryland Extension says, “In general, cook 1 cup of rice in 2 cups of water.” It also advises checking the rice package for its ratio, which is the better guide when provided. For a specific example, the Utah handout calls for 2 cups water per cup of long-grain brown rice, but 2½ cups per cup of brown basmati. Rice type matters even within the broad category of brown rice.
Wild rice and other varieties
USA Rice’s method table gives a 3-cup liquid example and a 40–50 minute cooking time for wild rice. That is an example, not a universal ratio; check the package for the product’s exact amount and method. Does a rice cooker use the same ratio?
Do not assume a stovetop ratio applies to a rice cooker. Follow the appliance directions and use the measuring cup and water markings specified for that cooker. Oregon State University Extension recommends checking the package and using the cooker’s own cup and instructions. [Oregon State University Extension: Cooking Rice]
A rice cooker is optional: the extension guidance also describes cooking rice on the stovetop, so you do not need to buy one to prepare rice.

A practical way to choose the amount
- Check the package. Use the ratio and cooking method listed for your exact rice product.
- Match the method. Keep stovetop measurements separate from rice-cooker cup and water-line instructions.
- Use the variety-specific example only if needed. If package guidance is unavailable, the table provides stovetop starting points for four varieties, while USA Rice provides a wild-rice liquid example.
