These rules are not interchangeable: changing your character’s look does not unlock a class, and older race/class charts may miss combinations added in later updates.
Which WoW races can be which classes?
Class eligibility depends on the race and the current version of retail WoW. Blizzard’s October 2022 update opened Mage, Priest, and Rogue to every playable race. Its published race/class matrix is a useful dated reference for other combinations, but it is not a complete current roster: Blizzard later added Void Elf Demon Hunters in the January 2026 Midnight pre-expansion update.
For the combination you want, check the current character-creation screen or Blizzard’s current playable-races guidance. Do not rely on the 2022 matrix as a definitive list of today’s options. The available combinations can change with updates.
Can any race be a Mage, Priest, or Rogue?
Yes. Blizzard announced that all playable races could choose Mage, Priest, or Rogue with the Dragonflight pre-expansion patch. That change did not remove restrictions for every other class.

Why older class charts can be wrong
Blizzard’s October 2022 chart predates later additions. For example, the January 2026 Midnight pre-expansion update added Void Elf Demon Hunters. Treat a chart as accurate only for the date and game version it describes.
Can my race join either faction?
Most races are listed under either the Alliance or the Horde. Pandaren and Dracthyr are listed under both factions on Blizzard’s playable-races page. Earthen are also an exception: Blizzard says they may choose Alliance or Horde after meeting the unlock requirements.

Faction choice and class eligibility are separate checks. Confirm both for your intended character before you create it, especially if you are choosing a race that must first be recruited in-game.
How do I unlock Allied Races?
Allied Races are recruited in-game rather than selected as immediately available standard races. Blizzard’s 2023 update removed most former Allied Race unlock restrictions, while retaining a requirement for an account character at level 40. The current playable-races page still directs players to recruit Allied Races in-game, so check the unlock guidance for the specific race you want.

Earthen as an example
Earthen can join either faction, but they become playable only after the campaign and quest requirements listed in Blizzard’s Earthen guide. That guide also lists their available class combinations and race-specific appearance choices, including gem encrustations, beards, and skin colors.
How does Dracthyr character creation work?
Dracthyr Evoker is a hero-class combination: the race and class are linked rather than independently selectable. Blizzard’s Dracthyr guide says you choose a faction during character creation and can customize both the Dracthyr and visage forms. Appearance can also be changed at the Barber Shop.

The guide was published in 2022, so do not assume its realm-specific character-creation limits still apply. Check the current in-game creation screen for current availability.

Appearance options vary by race. Blizzard’s Earthen and Dracthyr guides describe examples of race-specific choices, but those cosmetic options do not alter which classes the race can choose. For supported appearance changes, use the Barber Shop; Dracthyr’s guide specifically confirms that both forms can be customized there.

Can I change my race or faction later?
Blizzard offers race-change and faction-change character services. These are optional paid services, and current prices and terms should be checked on the official character-services announcement before purchase. Blizzard states that a faction change includes a race change for a character’s class. A service does not replace checking the current eligible combinations before you commit.
