On a U.S. Nutrition Facts label, look beneath Total Sugars for the indented Includes X g Added Sugars line. That figure shows the added sugars in one serving; it is already part of Total Sugars, not an extra amount. Then check serving size and scan the ingredients for sweeteners that may appear under names such as sucrose, dextrose, corn syrup, honey, or maple syrup.
Find the added-sugars amount on the Nutrition Facts label
On the usual U.S. label, Total Sugars includes both naturally occurring sugars and added sugars. The indented Added Sugars line clarifies how much of the total was added. For example, the FDA explains that a serving with 15 g Total Sugars and 7 g Added Sugars contains 7 g added sugars and 8 g sugars that were not added.
Milk and whole fruit are examples of foods with naturally occurring sugars. Those sugars count toward Total Sugars, but are excluded from the FDA definition of Added Sugars. The FDA describes Added Sugars as sugars added during processing or packaged as sweeteners, including sugars from syrups and honey and, in defined circumstances, concentrated fruit or vegetable juices. Check serving size before comparing products
The grams and % Daily Value (DV) on the label are for the stated serving. Compare products using equivalent amounts: first check whether their serving sizes match, then compare Added Sugars grams and %DV. If the servings differ, adjust the amounts to the same quantity before deciding which product has less added sugar. The ingredient list can help explain the source of sugars, but it does not provide a reliable way to calculate their grams.

Recognize added sugars by their ingredient names
Ingredient names are clues, not a complete legal test or a way to determine the exact grams of added sugar. Names identified in FDA materials include:
- Sugar and sugar names: sugar (sucrose), dextrose, glucose, and fructose.
- Syrups: corn syrup and high fructose corn syrup, as well as other syrups.
- Other sweeteners: honey and sugars from concentrated fruit or vegetable juices in specified circumstances.
Not every ingredient containing the word “fruit” necessarily counts as added sugar. Whether juice concentrate qualifies depends on the regulatory definition and product context. Use the Nutrition Facts Added Sugars amount as the primary comparison, rather than trying to infer grams from the ingredient list. FDA provides additional examples in Changes to the Nutrition Facts Label and its overview of Types of Food Ingredients.

Use %DV as a quick comparison guide
The FDA’s label-reading guidance says that 5% DV or less of added sugars per serving is low, while 20% DV or more is high. Use these thresholds to compare servings, not as a personalized health assessment.
The FDA’s Added Sugars Daily Value is 50 g per day, based on a 2,000-calorie diet. Separately, the FDA reports the Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommendation to limit calories from added sugars to less than 10% of total calories. For a 2,000-calorie diet, the FDA illustrates that recommendation as 200 calories, or 50 g, of added sugars per day. These are general reference points, not individualized advice. Know the single-ingredient sweetener exception
Pure honey, maple syrup, table sugar, and other single-ingredient sugars or syrups can have a different Added Sugars presentation. The label may show %DV without the usual gram declaration on the Added Sugars line; a footnote may provide gram information. A missing gram figure in that format does not mean the sweetener contributes zero added sugars.
Multi-ingredient sugar or syrup products have different labeling requirements; FDA examples include brown sugar blends and flavored syrups. See the FDA’s Added Sugars label guidance and labeling explainer for details.

Apply the label-reading method
- Find Total Sugars and the indented Added Sugars line in Nutrition Facts.
- Read the serving size, then note Added Sugars grams and %DV for that serving.
- When comparing foods, use the same quantity or adjust for different serving sizes.
- Scan ingredients for sugar, sucrose, dextrose, glucose, fructose, syrups, honey, or other sweeteners. Treat names as clues; use the declared Added Sugars amount for the numeric comparison.
- If a single-ingredient sweetener lacks the usual gram declaration, check for a %DV and any footnote rather than assuming the amount is zero.
A “no added sugars” statement should not be read as “no total sugar”: a product can contain naturally occurring sugars. The label helps compare foods; its figures alone do not determine what is right for an individual.
