Choose the 13-inch model when workspace matters more than portability; consider an iPad Pro when a specific display feature, capability, or exact memory-and-storage configuration fits your apps better. Which iPad is a capable starting point?
The current iPad Air with M4 is a strong baseline for many moderate video-editing and 3D workflows. Apple lists 12GB of unified memory and 120GB/s memory bandwidth for the M4 Air, as well as hardware-accelerated H.264, HEVC, ProRes, and ProRes RAW media support. Before buying, check that the particular app and release you intend to use supports the iPad model and iPadOS version. For example, Shapr3D lists iPadOS 17 or later as its baseline, but distinguishes basic design compatibility from Apple Silicon iPads for complex assemblies. Apple says the M4 Air is up to 30 percent faster than the M3 Air and up to 2.3 times faster than the M1 Air. Apple also claims over four times faster 3D Pro rendering with ray tracing versus the M1 Air. When is an iPad Pro a better fit?
Look at an iPad Pro when your workflow depends on a Pro-specific display or another model feature, or when the exact Pro configuration offers a memory-and-storage combination your apps need. Apple lists current 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro models in its M5 family, but memory details depend on configuration. For substantial CAD, consider the size and complexity of your assemblies and imported files, then check the app maker’s supported-device list. Should you choose the 11-inch or 13-inch Air?
The M4 Air’s two sizes share the cited 12GB memory specification, but trade portability for workspace. Apple lists the 13-inch model at 616g with a 12.9-inch viewable diagonal and 600 nits; the 11-inch model is 464g with a 10.86-inch viewable diagonal and 500 nits. The larger screen can make timelines, tool panels, and CAD workspaces easier to spread out, while the lighter model is easier to carry. How much storage should you buy?
Storage is separate from memory and chip performance. Apple says Final Cut Pro for iPad projects and media need to be stored locally on the iPad. Estimate the size and number of active projects, source footage, and exports you expect to keep on the device, then choose capacity around that workflow. Finished work can be offloaded or archived to make room for active projects. The available evidence does not establish one storage tier that suits every editor. Final Cut Pro for iPad is a separate subscription from Final Cut Pro for Mac. Do not assume that a Mac workflow’s memory requirements or storage habits transfer directly to the iPad app.

Do you need an Apple Pencil for CAD?
No universal Pencil requirement is established for iPad CAD. Apple lists Apple Pencil Pro support for the M4 Air, and Shapr3D recommends Apple Pencil while also supporting mouse, keyboard, or trackpad input. A practical comparison checklist
- App and model compatibility: Verify supported iPad models and the minimum iPadOS version for each essential app.
- Memory and chip: Compare the exact configuration against the complexity of your scenes, projects, and multitasking. The Air M4’s 12GB unified memory and 120GB/s bandwidth are verified Apple specifications, not a universal minimum for creative apps.
- Local storage: Budget for active projects and media on the iPad, especially if editing in Final Cut Pro for iPad.
