Lithium-ion batteries are the established choice in electric vehicles sold at scale. Solid-state batteries are a developing family of designs that may eventually improve energy density or safety, but those advantages have not yet been demonstrated in real-world applications, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). The practical differences are maturity, design, safety evidence, cost and availability—not a proven range advantage today.
What distinguishes the two battery types?
Lithium-ion uses a liquid electrolyte
In the lithium-ion EV batteries described by the IEA, lithium ions move through a liquid solution made from organic solvents and lithium salt. “Lithium-ion” covers multiple chemistries, not one fixed recipe. For example, nickel-rich chemistries tend to offer higher energy density, while lithium iron phosphate (LFP) is generally lower-cost and less energy-dense. The right comparison therefore depends on the particular chemistry and pack, as well as the broad battery category.
Solid-state covers several designs
Solid-state batteries replace the conventional liquid electrolyte with a solid electrolyte, but the label does not mean every design is completely solid. The IEA distinguishes commercial semi-solid polymer designs from almost-solid and all-solid-state prototypes; some almost-solid designs still contain small amounts of liquid electrolyte. Claims about a solid-state battery are most useful when they identify which subtype is being discussed.
How do they compare for an EV buyer?
| Factor | Lithium-ion | Solid-state | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|---|
| Commercial maturity | Established technology with a large manufacturing base and years of cost reductions. | Cells are being made at small scale for testing; all-solid-state production and vehicle-pack integration remain difficult. | The IEA describes lithium-ion as the commercial baseline. Its 2024 overview says lithium-ion chemistries made up nearly all batteries in EVs and new storage applications. |
| Range and energy density | Established and improving, with trade-offs among chemistries. | Often promoted as capable of higher energy density and longer range. | The IEA says the commonly cited solid-state advantages have not yet been demonstrated in real-world applications. There is no basis here for promising a particular range gain. |
| Safety | Organic liquid electrolytes can be volatile and flammable outside normal operating conditions. | Some liquid-electrolyte hazards may be reduced, but solid electrolytes and complete packs have their own failure modes. | The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) says more safety analysis is needed; chemistry labels alone do not establish which complete battery system is safer. |
| Pack cost | DOE estimated $139 per kWh of usable energy for a 2023 light-duty EV lithium-ion pack produced at a scale of at least 100,000 units a year. | No comparable current solid-state EV pack price is established in the IEA overview. | These are not equivalent price quotes or a controlled head-to-head cost comparison. The DOE figure is an estimated manufacturing cost, not a retail or replacement-pack price. |
| Availability | Broadly deployed in EVs. | Company timelines are announced targets, not evidence of delivered cars or mass-market supply. | The IEA expects initial solid-state use to be concentrated in premium segments before broader adoption. |
Will solid-state batteries give EVs longer range?
They might, but a solid electrolyte by itself does not guarantee more range. Higher energy density is a frequently cited potential benefit, not a demonstrated universal result for production EVs. Vehicle range depends on the complete cell and pack, including how efficiently cells are arranged, and on the vehicle itself.

The IEA’s 2025 range-and-price chart uses assumptions, including different pack-packing efficiencies for lithium-ion and solid-state packs; some estimates draw on public information and company announcements. Such a chart is a modeled comparison, not a standardized road test of comparable production cars. No source-backed head-to-head production-EV test establishes a real-world range advantage here.
Are solid-state batteries safer?
Not automatically. Liquid organic electrolytes in conventional lithium-ion batteries can be flammable outside normal operating conditions, which is one reason solid electrolytes are being explored. But the DOE’s 2024 Energy Storage Safety Strategic Plan cautions that solid-state systems still need thorough modeling and experimental safety analysis before commercialization.

Solid electrolytes do not eliminate every hazard
- The DOE notes that lithium dendrites can still form through ceramic solid electrolytes.
- Some polymer electrolytes can themselves be flammable.
- In a short circuit, higher energy density can concentrate released heat in a smaller mass and volume, producing higher temperatures in some solid-state designs.
Safety depends on the cell design, materials, pack engineering and failure conditions—not simply whether an electrolyte is called liquid or solid. A solid-state battery should not be described as fireproof.
What do solid-state batteries cost, and why is scaling difficult?
For context on the incumbent technology, DOE’s 2024 publication estimated a light-duty lithium-ion pack cost of $139 per kWh of usable energy for 2023 production at a scale of at least 100,000 units annually. The estimate was $1,415 per kWh in 2008, expressed in constant 2023 dollars—a decline of about 90%. DOE attributes the reduction to chemistry and technology improvements, manufacturing progress and increased production volume. These figures describe estimated pack manufacturing cost, not what a buyer pays for a vehicle or a replacement battery.

There is no comparable current solid-state EV pack price established in the IEA overview, so the figures do not support a direct price-versus-price comparison. Early solid-state costs are expected to be high. The IEA identifies complex, costly manufacturing and demanding pack integration as obstacles; some designs also require higher operating pressure in the pack. Meanwhile, lithium-ion keeps improving, giving new designs a moving cost and performance benchmark to beat.

Solid-state subtypes should not be conflated when discussing availability: the IEA identifies commercial semi-solid polymer designs, while almost-solid and all-solid-state designs remain at the prototype stage. Its Global EV Outlook 2026 reports several company plans and tests, but those announcements do not establish that comparable consumer EVs are already on sale.

- Toyota has announced a target for its first all-solid-state battery-powered vehicle by 2028.
- BYD has stated plans for an initial all-solid-state EV from 2027 and mass production from 2030; the IEA reports Samsung has similar production timelines.
- The IEA reports that QuantumScape tested a solid-state battery in a motorcycle in 2025 and that Factorial Energy announced a real-world range test.
These dates are company targets or reported tests, and can change. The IEA expects solid-state batteries to remain limited to premium segments until the first half of the 2030s, with mass-market adoption taking longer. A milestone such as a test or announced production start is not proof of broad vehicle availability.
