Start with the work you do, the displays and devices you connect, and how much screen you want to carry. Apple’s current lineup includes 13- and 15-inch MacBook Air models and 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, with configurations across the M5 family. For everyday productivity and mobile use, compare Air configurations first; consider a Pro when its chip options, display capabilities, or built-in ports match a specific need. Apple’s specifications describe hardware, not independent performance in your applications.

Start with your workload and setup

Before choosing a model, write down the applications and project sizes you handle, how many apps you typically keep open, the displays you use, and the peripherals you need to connect. Those details are more useful than a job title: two people doing “video editing” or “design” may have very different project sizes and connection needs.

  • Everyday productivity, study, and mobile use: Start with the MacBook Air and select memory and storage for your actual apps and files.
  • Sustained demanding work, advanced graphics or media needs, or several external displays: Compare MacBook Pro configurations, checking the exact chip and display-support limits.
  • Many wired devices: Compare the built-in ports first. A compatible dock or hub may help if the MacBook lacks connections you need, but it does not remove the computer’s display-support limits.

Apple’s current comparison lists the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air (M5) and the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro across the M5 family. Confirm the exact generation and configuration when buying; Apple comparison pages may also display older models. Apple’s Mac comparison is the reference for the current lineup.

Choose Air or Pro by the capability you need

MacBook Air and MacBook Pro are different hardware tiers, not a simple “basic” versus “professional” test. The Air’s published M5 specifications include a 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine, and 153GB/s memory bandwidth. Configurable unified memory reaches 32GB on some configurations. MacBook Pro configurations extend to M5 Pro and M5 Max, with different memory, display, and connection capabilities. Apple’s MacBook Air specifications and MacBook Pro specifications list the options.

Best reason to compare it General productivity, study, and everyday mobile use Need for a higher chip tier, more built-in connections, or specified external-display support

The table describes published configuration differences, not comparative app results. Apple’s specification pages do not establish which MacBook completes a particular third-party task faster. If your decision depends on performance in a named application, seek testing for that application and the exact configurations you are considering rather than inferring results from core counts.

Pick a screen size that suits your day

The Air is listed with 13.6-inch and 15.3-inch displays; the Pro with 14.2-inch and 16.2-inch displays. These diagonal measurements help compare physical workspace and portability, but they do not tell you which machine will feel right in use. If possible, view the sizes in person and consider how often you work away from an external monitor.

When a smaller model makes sense

Choose a 13-inch Air or 14-inch Pro if carrying the laptop frequently is a priority and the built-in screen is sufficient for your usual work. The Pro’s display has ProMotion with refresh rates up to 120Hz; that specification may matter to your display preference, but it does not by itself establish application performance.

When a larger model makes sense

A 15-inch Air or 16-inch Pro gives you a larger built-in work area, which can make side-by-side windows and timelines easier to arrange without an external display. The tradeoff is a physically larger device to carry. The Air specifications list 500 nits brightness, P3 wide color, and True Tone; the Pro page lists Liquid Retina XDR displays. Check Apple’s specifications for the exact model and configuration if display characteristics are central to your work.

Choose memory and storage from actual projects

There is no universally correct memory amount for a job title. Consider the size of the projects you work on, the number and type of apps you use at the same time, how much local media or other data you keep, and how long you expect to use the computer. Treat any memory recommendation as a judgment about those needs, not a guarantee of performance.

The cited Air specifications list 16GB unified memory as a base in some configurations, configurable to 24GB or 32GB; other model and configuration combinations start at different memory and storage levels. Some Air configurations list storage up to 4TB. Check the live configuration matrix for the exact model before purchase, since the starting options vary. The Pro page lists its own chip-dependent memory and storage choices.

Check ports and external-display support before buying

Count the devices you connect at once: chargers, external drives, displays, card readers, and audio gear. MacBook Air has MagSafe 3, a 3.5 mm headphone jack, and two Thunderbolt 4 ports. Apple lists those Thunderbolt 4 ports as supporting charging, DisplayPort, Thunderbolt 4 up to 40Gb/s, and USB 4 up to 40Gb/s. MacBook Pro adds HDMI and SDXC and has three Thunderbolt ports; M5 Pro and M5 Max configurations list Thunderbolt 5. The generation and capabilities depend on the specific Pro configuration.

Do not choose a MacBook based only on a general claim about how many monitors a model supports. Apple lists up to three external displays for specified M5 Pro configurations and up to four for specified M5 Max configurations; support varies by chip and model. Check the exact configuration’s resolution and display limits against your monitor setup on Apple’s MacBook Pro specifications page. If you plan to use a dock, verify that it works with the MacBook and supports the display arrangement you want.

Use battery figures as estimates, not promises

Apple lists up to 18 hours of video streaming and up to 15 hours of wireless web for the cited MacBook Air. These are Apple’s manufacturer test estimates, not guaranteed everyday runtimes; actual battery life varies with use and configuration. Pro battery figures also vary by configuration, so compare the figure for the exact model on Apple’s specification page rather than assuming one value applies to every Pro.

A practical decision sequence

  1. List your workload: Note the applications, typical project size, simultaneous apps, and local files you use.
  2. Set your screen preference: Choose between 13/14-inch portability and the larger 15/16-inch workspace based on where you work most.
  3. Compare Air and Pro capabilities: Start with Air for everyday mobile tasks; compare Pro if a higher chip tier, display features, or specific connections address a real requirement.
  4. Choose memory and storage: Match them to your projects, apps, and file retention needs, then confirm the precise configuration options.
  5. Audit your connections: Match ports and external-display limits to your devices and monitors; add a compatible dock only if it resolves a specific port shortfall.
  6. Verify the generation: Check Apple’s current comparison and the retailer’s exact model details so an older listing is not mistaken for a current configuration.
