Automakers evaluate a new battery as part of a complete vehicle—not as a cell with an impressive headline specification. They compare its performance, safety, durability, cost, manufacturability, and fit with a particular vehicle, then build evidence through cell, module, pack, and vehicle testing. The exact qualification sequence and pass/fail thresholds vary by automaker, battery design, vehicle, and destination market; public sources do not establish one universal industry standard.
Why the intended vehicle comes first
A battery that suits a small, affordable standard-range car may not be the right choice for a high-power or long-range model. Automakers first define the vehicle’s needs, including usable range, charging time, power delivery, efficiency, available package space, thermal behavior, safety, cost, and production constraints. Those requirements interact: improving one characteristic can affect others.
Renault describes separate battery-development streams for high-energy vehicles and more affordable small cars or standard-range versions. Its roadmap also sets different targets for the two streams, including a planned 10% to 40% energy-density increase. How validation progresses from cell to vehicle
Testing generally becomes more integrated as a battery moves toward adoption. A cell result is a starting point; it does not establish that a complete pack is safe, durable, compatible with a vehicle, or ready for high-volume production.
- Characterize cells. Engineers assess properties such as capacity, power, efficiency, temperature stability, charging behavior, and safety. Published figures need to be interpreted in light of the test conditions and the scale tested.
- Test modules and packs. Teams assess how cells behave when assembled, including whether a failure can spread and how the pack’s structure and protective systems respond.
- Integrate the battery into a vehicle. Engineers adapt and validate pack structure, thermal management, sensors, battery-management controls, power electronics, charging systems, crash structures, and vehicle software.
- Validate in vehicle use. Driving and charging tests help evaluate behavior under vehicle loads and operating conditions that cell tests alone cannot represent.
- Establish production readiness. The supplier and automaker must show that cells can be made consistently to specification and that production, servicing, economics, and supply can support the intended vehicle.
A Stellantis and Factorial example shows why the steps matter. The companies reported that FEST cells demonstrated 375 Wh/kg, charging from 15% to 90% in 18 minutes, and reliability from -30 °C to 45 °C in 2025 demonstrations. In a June 2026 release, Stellantis described further work to adapt the pack design and controls for a Dodge Charger Daytona development vehicle, followed by road testing and calibration. What safety and environmental tests examine
Battery testing targets different failure modes at different assembly levels. UL Solutions describes an incremental approach: characterize thermal runaway and gas at cell level, examine propagation within a module, then assess spread between modules and protective barriers at pack level.
Depending on the battery design and applicable requirements, testing can include overcharge, short circuit, crush, impact, drop, fire or heater exposure, nail penetration, water immersion, vibration, shock, altitude, gas composition, and temperature endurance. The applicable protocol depends on the product, standards, regulations, and automaker requirements; the list is not a universal checklist every battery must pass.

UL Solutions names examples of relevant standards and regulations, including UL 2580, FMVSS No. 305a, GB 38031, IEC 62660-3, SAE J2464, UN 38.3, and UNECE R100. How automakers assess durability and compliance
Durability is meaningful only when the metric, test conditions, and endpoint are defined. A European Commission Joint Research Centre report says assessment needs repeatable and replicable methods, a defined product lifetime, and conditions representing both typical use and foreseeable challenges. Examples include high temperature, humidity, thermal cycling, vibration, and frequent use. The report defines durability as the ability to perform at an anticipated level over a given period and under expected conditions and foreseeable actions. Compliance is also market-specific. In July 2026, the EU adopted Commission Implementing Regulation 2026/1764, amending Euro 7 implementation rules covering in-vehicle battery durability, low-temperature electric range, and electrified-vehicle system power. Applicability dates vary by provision, so a compliance claim should identify the relevant jurisdiction and rule version rather than imply one global requirement. A technology can perform well in development tests and still face hurdles before adoption. Automakers need confidence that suppliers can repeatedly manufacture cells to specification, that packs can be produced and serviced, and that the cost and supply chain suit the vehicle program.

Toyota reported in 2024 that Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry had certified development and production plans for next-generation and all-solid-state batteries. The announcement listed a gradual production start from 2026 and a planned 9 GWh per year for one performance-battery line. How to compare battery technologies fairly
Battery comparisons are useful only when they match the vehicle use case and test conditions. A high cell-level energy-density figure, for example, does not by itself establish usable vehicle range or pack-level performance.
- Energy density and usable range in the intended vehicle
- Charging time and performance across relevant temperatures
- Power delivery and efficiency
- Safety, thermal propagation, and response to abuse
- Durability and degradation under representative use
- Pack, thermal-management, and control-system integration
- Cost, manufacturability, and supplier scale
- Compliance evidence for the destination market
Because test conditions, pack design, vehicle segment, and production maturity differ, a single metric cannot support a reliable ranking of battery chemistries.
What public information cannot establish
Automakers do not publicly disclose a common qualification matrix, confidential supplier scorecards, or universal numerical pass/fail thresholds. Public examples show the kinds of criteria and development stages involved, but the required evidence and limits depend on the chemistry, pack, vehicle, intended market, and automaker. A company-reported demonstration, roadmap target, or production plan should therefore be treated as exactly that—not as proof of broad adoption.
