You can install a different Linux distribution and keep your personal files, but a separate /home partition is not a backup. First copy important data to storage independent of the partitions you may change, then verify that the copy opens. During installation, preserving an existing separate /home requires selecting the correct partition, assigning it to /home, and explicitly leaving it unformatted.

Before you install: protect your files and map the disk

Back up important files before repartitioning or installing. The Debian GNU/Linux Installation Guide advises backing up files before installation and making a full backup before changing partitions; its reviewed guidance is from the Bookworm s390x guide, so use these general safety principles rather than treating its entire installation workflow as desktop instructions. Debian GNU/Linux Installation Guide.

  • Use a separate drive or other storage that will not be affected by the installation. Make sure it has enough free space for the files you intend to preserve.
  • Open several files from the backup to check that they are readable. Keep recovery keys and credentials required to access encrypted disks or backup storage.
  • Use a read-only view of your current partition layout to identify the partition containing /, any separate /home, and the EFI System Partition if the machine boots in UEFI mode. Record the device and filesystem information; do not infer a partition’s purpose from its device name alone.
  • Make a list of applications and special system services to reinstall. A package list is a reference, not a portable installer: package names, versions, package managers, and repositories differ between distributions.
  • Prepare installation media for the target distribution and confirm that the computer can boot it before making disk changes.

A separate /home is still on the same storage unless you have another copy elsewhere. A disk failure, partition-table change, or mistaken format selection can destroy it along with other data.

Choose whether to reuse your old /home

There are two practical approaches: keep the existing home partition and its settings, or install with a fresh home directory and restore selected files. If there is no separate /home, preserving files while replacing the system depends on the target installer’s supported procedure; do not assume it will keep your files automatically.

Consideration Reuse the old /home Fresh home, then restore selected files
Personal files Remain in place if the correct partition is preserved and not formatted. Copied back from a verified backup.
Application settings Old hidden configuration, caches, and application data remain too. Only settings you choose to restore are brought over.
Cross-distribution compatibility More exposure to differences in application versions and patches. Less chance of carrying stale configuration into the new system.
What the approach requires Correctly identifying and mounting the partition, with formatting disabled. A verified backup and enough destination storage.
Often a better fit when You understand the partition layout and want to retain your settings. You are moving to a substantially different distribution or want a clean setup.

Option 1: Reuse a separate /home

In the target installer’s manual or custom partitioning flow, select the existing home partition, assign its mount point as /home, and explicitly disable formatting. The Ubuntu Community Help Wiki’s home-migration guidance recommends reusing the existing username; that can help the existing user directory map as expected, but installer labels and behavior vary. Ubuntu Community Help Wiki: Partitioning/Home/Moving.

Reusing the partition preserves more than documents: hidden configuration files and application state can come along. ArchWiki cautions that sharing a home directory between distributions can expose software to settings created by different versions or patches. ArchWiki: Partitioning.

  • ✅Supported UEFI and Legacy, Compatibility any PC/Laptop, Any boot issue only needs to disable "Secure Boot"

Option 2: Start with a fresh home and restore chosen files

Install the target distribution with a fresh home directory, then copy back documents, photos, project files, and other personal data from the verified backup. Restore hidden configuration selectively rather than copying every hidden file wholesale. Some applications may have their own export or migration steps; the general guidance on cross-distribution settings does not establish a universal migration method for every application.

Option 3: No separate /home

Back up files before selecting an installation or replacement path. Ubuntu documents a particular reinstall scenario that can preserve home content, but that behavior is specific to that guidance and should not be assumed for other distributions or installers. Ubuntu Community Help Wiki: UbuntuReinstallation.

During installation: check every partition before writing changes

  1. Choose manual or custom partitioning only if you can identify the partitions. If the proposed layout or a partition’s purpose is unclear, stop rather than guessing.
  2. Assign the target system partition to /. Follow the target distribution’s instructions for whether that partition should be formatted.
  3. If reusing /home, select the existing home partition and set its mount point to /home. Verify the device and filesystem shown, and make sure the format checkbox or equivalent control is off for this partition.
  4. Handle the EFI System Partition according to the machine’s boot mode and the target distribution’s current instructions. Reuse it when appropriate; do not format it unless the current installation documentation explicitly directs you to.
  5. Review the final change summary before approving disk writes. Confirm mount points and formatting choices for every partition you intend to preserve. Debian’s installation guide also emphasizes checking the partition table, mount points, and formatting decisions because changing a partition with an existing filesystem generally destroys its information. Debian GNU/Linux Installation Guide.

Exact screens, labels, automatic partitioning behavior, encryption handling, and bootloader steps depend on the target distribution and release. If the installer’s proposed changes are unclear, return to the live session and consult that distribution’s current installation guide instead of committing the changes.

After installation: verify files, then rebuild the system

  • Confirm that the new system boots and that expected files are present before deleting, reformatting, or repurposing the backup.
  • Reinstall applications from the new distribution’s repositories. Keeping /home does not generally restore installed packages, system configuration, bootloader setup, or services.
  • Restore system-level configuration deliberately. Ubuntu’s reinstall guidance notes that some special application settings may reside in system folders rather than the home directory. Ubuntu Community Help Wiki: UbuntuReinstallation.
  • If files appear inaccessible, check ownership and permissions before making recursive changes. Do not assume numeric user IDs always match between installations.
  • Keep the independent backup until the new system, applications, and important files have been checked in ordinary use.
