Track content distribution by linking each placement to a clear goal, consistent campaign tags, platform-native exposure and engagement measures, and downstream site events. Then compare like with like and state what attribution can—and cannot—show. A repeatable workflow makes it easier to decide which channels to repeat, adapt, test, or stop without treating unlike metrics as interchangeable.
Start with the decision the measurement should support
Before choosing metrics, write down what you need to decide: where to put more distribution effort, which formats reach the intended audience, which placements bring qualified visits, or which activity contributes credit to signups or sales. Define the relevant conversion or key event before reviewing channel performance. Without a defined outcome, a report can describe activity but cannot show whether it met the goal.
Choose a small set of measures that matches the objective. Keep exposure, audience response, and downstream outcomes separate: impressions are not clicks, and clicks are not leads or revenue. There is no universal engagement-rate or channel benchmark that fits every objective and platform.
Keep a register of every distribution placement
Use a shared register with one row per placement where possible. Record enough context to distinguish channel performance from differences in the asset, audience, timing, or paid status.

- Canonical URL and asset title or ID
- Format, publication date, and target audience
- Channel and specific placement
- Organic or paid status
- Campaign name and destination
This is a practical team convention, not a required platform template. It helps you compare the same asset across channels and maintain a record of what was actually distributed.
Standardize campaign tags on outbound links
Use a consistent naming convention for source, medium, and campaign values in tagged URLs. Google Analytics documents parameters including utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_id, and utm_content; their values map into campaign and traffic-source reporting dimensions. Agree on capitalization and naming before a campaign begins. Use utm_content, or another controlled field, to distinguish meaningful placements or creative variants rather than making a new campaign name for every minor change. Test tagged URLs and check reports for missing or unexpected values. Apply tags to external links that lead to your own property; platform analytics alone do not show what visitors do after arriving on your site.
Measure distribution in three stages

Preserve each platform’s definitions in your reporting; a shared metric name does not guarantee a shared method. LinkedIn Page analytics, for example, include impressions, members reached, clicks, reactions, comments, reposts, and engagement rate. LinkedIn defines engagement rate in relation to impressions and notes that impressions and reach can be estimates. Its Page content analytics documentation describes the measures.

For video, views alone do not describe how much attention a placement held. YouTube Analytics includes impressions, impressions click-through rate, views, unique viewers, watch time, average view duration, and engaged views. Consult YouTube Analytics’ metric overview and retain the platform’s metric scope when comparing results.
Connect channel activity to website outcomes
Mark the relevant analytics events as key events, then use channel reporting to see how the configured system assigns credit. Google Analytics’ All channels performance report can break down key-event credit by default channel group, source platform, source, medium, or campaign. The property needs to be collecting data and have at least one event marked as a key event. Campaign breakdowns may also depend on a linked advertising account or imported campaign data. Google Analytics groups traffic using channel definitions. For example, the default channel group is a rule-based classification; a channel group is not the same thing as a platform’s own label for a placement. Review Google’s default channel group documentation when interpreting a channel breakdown.

An attribution model determines how credit is distributed across touchpoints in a conversion path. Google Analytics describes data-driven attribution, paid and organic last click, and Google paid channels last click; each assigns credit differently. Its attribution overview also says first click, linear, time decay, and position-based models were discontinued in November 2023. Check the current report and property configuration before naming the model in a report. See Google’s attribution overview.

Use attribution to answer, “How did the configured model distribute credit?” It does not, by itself, answer, “What would have happened if we had not distributed this content?” If you need a stronger causal conclusion, use a suitable experiment or holdout design where feasible, and explain the method and its limits. The right design depends on the channel and situation; there is no single causal design established for all distribution efforts.
Compare channels fairly
Before ranking channels, check whether the comparison is meaningful. Compare placements with similar objectives, asset formats, audiences, time windows, and paid or organic status. Show absolute counts alongside rates so a high rate from very small reach does not hide scale.
- Audience fit: Did the placement reach the intended audience?
- Eligible reach: What does the platform count as reach, and is it an estimate?
- Response: What is the rate’s denominator, and are the underlying definitions comparable?
- Downstream outcomes: Which qualified visits, key events, leads, or purchases are recorded?
- Effort and timing: What cost or staff effort is known, and how long did results take to appear?
- Measurement confidence: Are tags missing, data modeled, or platform estimates involved?
When definitions differ, label them rather than forcing them into a single ranking. A platform’s engagement rate and another platform’s click-through rate may answer different questions.
