1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYou may already own a device that can serve as an Apple Home hub: HomePod and HomePod mini act as hubs when set up, while Apple TV 4K does so after you assign it to a room in the Home app. Before buying anything, check what your accessories require—especially whether they use Matter over Thread—and whether your existing device supports it.
First, decide whether you need a hub
Apple’s setup guidance says a home hub is required to add Matter accessories to the Home app. The need can differ for other accessories: Apple’s compatibility guidance describes pairing and local control of non-Thread Matter accessories from an iPhone or iPad, while a home hub is needed for automations, notifications, and remote access. Thread-based accessories require a Thread-enabled Apple Home hub, and some Apple hub configurations also need a compatible Thread border router. See Apple’s home hub setup instructions and Works with Apple Home compatibility guidance for the accessory-specific details.
So, start with your intended accessories and features, not the device shelf. If you only want local control of compatible non-Thread accessories, your requirements may be different from a setup that needs Matter onboarding, Thread, automations, notifications, or control while away from home.

| Option | Best fit | What to check |

| HomePod mini | A compact speaker that also becomes a home hub and supports Thread. | It needs power and Wi-Fi where you place it. Apple lists a 20 W power adapter in the box, plus temperature and humidity sensors. Check regional availability and whether its speaker and sensor features suit the room. | HomePod (2nd generation) | A larger speaker that also works as a hub and supports Thread. | Consider whether its audio features matter in your room. Apple lists a woofer, five tweeters, temperature and humidity sensing, and Wi-Fi internet access. Check the current product listing and software support. | Apple TV 4K | A streaming device that can also act as a home hub. | Add it to a room in the Home app. If you plan to use Thread accessories, verify the exact generation and Wi-Fi/Ethernet configuration; Thread support is not guaranteed by the Apple TV name alone. Check Matter and Thread compatibility before you buy
Matter does not always mean Thread
Matter is the smart-home standard, while Thread is one type of network connection used by some Matter accessories. Confirm whether each accessory is Matter over Thread or uses another supported connection. For Apple Home, Apple says a hub is required to add Matter accessories; its compatibility guidance distinguishes non-Thread Matter from Thread-based accessories and their requirements.

- Premium, immersive, high-fidelity audio
Thread support depends on the exact hub configuration
Apple names HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet as Thread-enabled home hub examples for Thread Matter accessories. Its developer guidance cautions that some Apple TV generations or variants and HomePod (1st generation) need a compatible Thread border router. Check the exact model and network variant rather than assuming every Apple TV or HomePod can provide Thread connectivity.
Choose based on what you want in the room
Choose HomePod mini for a compact speaker and hub
HomePod mini combines hub functions with a small speaker, Thread networking, and temperature and humidity sensors. Apple lists it at 3.3 inches high and 3.9 inches wide, with a 20 W power adapter in the box. Place it where Wi-Fi reaches and where its speaker or sensors are useful.

- Features a 4" high-excursion woofer and five beamforming tweeters for deep bass, clear vocals, and detailed room-filling audio.
- Room Sensing technology automatically adjusts sound based on where the speaker is placed.
- Built-in Siri enables voice control for music, reminders, messages, smart home devices, and more.
- Supports AirPlay, Spatial Audio, Thread, Matter smart home control, Bluetooth 5.0, and Wi-Fi 4.
- Pair two HomePod speakers for stereo sound or use multiple units for whole-home audio playback.
Choose HomePod (2nd generation) when the larger speaker matters
The second-generation HomePod also supports Thread and acts as a hub when set up. Its larger audio system—a woofer and five tweeters, according to Apple—makes it the speaker-led option; it also includes temperature and humidity sensing.
Choose Apple TV 4K if you also want streaming
Apple TV can cover both streaming and hub duties, which is useful if you already want an Apple TV. It must be assigned to a room in the Home app to act as a hub. For Thread, confirm its precise generation and Wi-Fi/Ethernet configuration against the accessory requirements before relying on it.

Confirm setup prerequisites and placement
Apple’s setup guidance says the home hub should remain in the home, connected to home Wi-Fi and powered on. The Home owner must add it, and the Apple Account must have iCloud Keychain and two-factor authentication enabled. Apple also advises keeping the hub updated.
- Confirm each accessory works with Apple Home and identify whether it uses Matter over Thread.
- Check the exact Apple TV model and network configuration if Thread devices are involved.
- Make sure the person adding the hub is the Home owner.
- Choose a location with Wi-Fi coverage and continuous power; for a HomePod, consider whether the speaker and sensor functions are useful there.
- Check product availability in your country or region; Apple notes that these products are not available everywhere.
A practical buying decision
- Inventory what you own. Check whether an existing HomePod, HomePod mini, or Apple TV can already serve as your hub.
- List the features you need. Separate local control from automations, notifications, and remote access, then check Apple’s requirements for the accessories involved.
- Verify Thread. Match the accessory’s connection to the precise Apple hub generation and configuration, or confirm whether a supported border router is required.
- Pick a device for its second job. Choose a speaker if audio and room placement matter, or Apple TV if streaming is also part of the plan.
- Check setup conditions and availability. Confirm power, Wi-Fi, account security settings, ownership, and local product availability before purchasing.
Apple describes HomePod as enabling voice control of smart-home accessories at home and control through the Home app on Apple devices when away; available automations depend on the accessories configured in Home. Details are in Apple’s HomePod guide for software version 27 or later.
