Start by finding the transaction hash (TXID) and checking it on a block explorer for the network you used. The explorer can show whether the transfer has not yet been included in a block, is still collecting confirmations, or is confirmed. That distinction tells you whether to wait, use a supported wallet action, or contact the receiving service. Do not resend just because the balance has not updated.
Check the transaction before taking action
- Find the TXID. Open the transaction details in the sending wallet or exchange and copy its transaction hash. If you are the recipient, ask the sender for it. Coinbase explains how to open the relevant block explorer from transaction details in its pending transaction guidance; Uniswap also recommends checking the explorer for the network used.
- Use the right explorer. A transaction hash must be checked on the blockchain network that carried the transfer. An explorer for another network will not establish the status of this transfer.
- Read the status. Blockchain.com distinguishes a pending transaction, which has been submitted but is not yet in a block; a confirming transaction, which is included but has not reached a service’s required confirmation count; and a confirmed transaction, which has reached that service’s threshold. The number of confirmations needed varies by blockchain and receiving service.
- Compare the destination details. Check the destination address and network against the receiving wallet or exchange’s deposit instructions. A transfer can be confirmed on-chain but still not credited because the service requires more confirmations or an account action.
- Do not send a duplicate yet. Establish whether the original transaction was broadcast and what the explorer reports before trying again. Resending without checking can create a second transfer rather than resolve the first.
Why is my crypto transaction pending?
“Pending” is not a single diagnosis. Coinbase lists temporary network or system synchronization issues and insufficient confirmations as possible explanations. Exodus also identifies low transaction fees, network congestion, and block times as possible causes. These are possibilities, not proof of what happened to a particular transfer; use its TXID and the correct explorer to check.
If it has not been included in a block
If the transaction is valid and has the intended destination, waiting may be the safest next step. Some wallets offer a speed-up option for an unconfirmed transaction, typically by replacing or resubmitting it with a higher fee. Availability depends on the wallet, network, and transaction state, and a higher fee does not guarantee confirmation. Follow the sending wallet’s instructions rather than assuming another wallet exposes the same controls.
If you need to cancel an unconfirmed transaction
Cancellation is also wallet- and network-dependent. Check whether the sending wallet offers a cancellation control while the transaction is still unconfirmed. Uniswap notes that cancellation may require a higher-fee transaction, costs a network fee, and may work only when there are no other pending transactions. It is not a way to reverse a transaction that is already confirmed.

If a service still labels it pending
A receiving platform may use “pending” to mean that an on-chain transfer has not yet met its own crediting threshold. Coinbase’s Exchange guidance has cited two confirmations for BTC as an example in that guidance; it is a platform-specific example, not a universal Bitcoin rule or a current threshold for every asset. Check the receiving service’s current deposit requirements for the asset and network involved.
The explorer says confirmed, but the balance is missing
- Recheck the destination address and network against the receiving service’s instructions.
- Check that the service supports both the asset and the network used, and review its required confirmation count.
- If those details match, contact the receiving exchange or wallet through its official support route. Include the TXID and the asset and network; never send a seed phrase or private key.
Credit can also depend on account actions or identity requirements. Coinbase advises checking those requirements when a deposit has not appeared. Policies for unsupported assets or networks differ: Coinbase warns that it cannot recover funds in the wrong-network case described in its guidance, while Blockchain.com says it may be able to help with some incorrect or unsupported transfers to accounts it manages, subject to its recovery conditions. Neither statement guarantees recovery in an individual case.

What if the transfer went to the wrong address or network?
Confirmed transfer to the wrong address
A confirmed blockchain transaction generally cannot be canceled or reversed by the sender. Coinbase’s wrong-address guidance puts it plainly: “Crypto transactions are final and cannot be canceled or reversed.”
- If you can identify the address owner, contact them and ask for their cooperation.
- If the address belongs to an exchange or custodial wallet, contact that platform through its official support channel and provide the TXID.
- If no one controls or can identify the address, recovery may not be possible.
Transfer sent on the wrong network
This is different from sending to the wrong address. Contact the recipient platform or wallet’s official support with the exact network and TXID. Some services may be able to investigate; others say they cannot recover funds sent on an unsupported network. Similar-looking addresses do not establish that a transfer can be recovered.

Avoid recovery scams
Use contact details from the provider’s official website or app. Treat unsolicited direct messages and guaranteed-recovery offers as dangerous, and never disclose your seed phrase or private key to someone claiming to be support. Blockchain.com warns, “We will never ask you to deposit significant funds to unfreeze your account or speed up stuck transaction.” MetaMask likewise cautions that people claiming they can recover funds or represent MetaMask may be scammers. Do not pay a stranger to retrieve a transfer.
