Linux distributions set their own release schedules, support periods, and upgrade rules. Ubuntu, for example, publishes a release every six months, while its long-term support (LTS) releases follow a two-year schedule; Fedora separately requires an explicit distribution upgrade to move to a new release. Whether a particular computer will work depends on its exact hardware, the distribution release, and the software you need.

How often do Linux distributions release new versions?

There is no Linux-wide release calendar. Each distribution sets its own schedule, and some distinguish between release types. Ubuntu is one example of a fixed-release distribution: Canonical documents a new version every six months, with every fourth release designated LTS and published every two years in April. These are Ubuntu policies, not a schedule shared by all distributions. Ubuntu release cycle

Fixed releases, point releases, and refreshed installers

A fixed-release distribution provides releases with defined versions and support periods. Within that model, a point release can collect updates already issued for an LTS version. Ubuntu says its LTS point releases bundle accumulated updates, which can help a fresh installation work with newer hardware and reduce the updates it needs to download. A point release is not the same thing as moving to a later major distribution release. Ubuntu release cycle

Other projects use different schedules and lifecycle rules. Check the official release information for the specific distribution and version you plan to install rather than assuming Ubuntu’s cadence applies elsewhere.

How long is a Linux distro supported?

Support duration depends on the distribution, the exact release, and sometimes the software component or support program. Canonical’s documented terms for Ubuntu distinguish standard security maintenance from extended coverage:

Ubuntu release or coverage Documented duration and scope
LTS standard security maintenance Five years for packages in the main component.
Interim release Nine months of support.
LTS with extended coverage Canonical lists up to 15 years for LTS plus ESM Infrastructure and Applications plus ESM Legacy, subject to the program and package coverage. This is extended coverage, not the standard LTS period; terms depend on the component and option.

These periods come from Canonical’s release and security documentation; they should not be treated as universal Linux support terms. Verify the lifecycle for the particular release and packages you rely on. Ubuntu release cycle Ubuntu security maintenance

Do Linux updates upgrade to the next version?

Usually, a routine package update and a distribution upgrade are separate actions. Routine updates install available changes within the release already on the computer. In Ubuntu’s fixed-release model, security fixes are generally backported and do not generally add new functionality; backward compatibility is a stated stability goal. This describes Ubuntu’s approach, not a guarantee about every distribution or package. Ubuntu security

Fedora explicitly says that continuing to update does not automatically move a system to its next release: a distribution upgrade is required. Follow the chosen project’s own upgrade instructions and check release-specific prerequisites before starting. Fedora FAQ

How do I check whether my computer is compatible with Linux?

Compatibility is specific to the computer, peripherals, distribution release, and applications you need. Before installing, identify the exact computer model and check the target release’s official requirements, supported architecture, known issues, and hardware guidance. Pay particular attention to wireless networking, graphics, suspend and resume, printers, docks, and any specialist software that is essential to your work.

  1. Choose a specific distribution and release. Compatibility claims are only useful when they refer to the release you intend to install.
  2. Look up the exact hardware. Compare your model and any separate devices—such as a printer, dock, or wireless adapter—with the distribution’s current hardware documentation and release notes.
  3. Check requirements and known issues. Confirm the machine’s architecture and specifications meet the release’s requirements, and look for documented problems affecting your hardware or required software.
  4. Test the setup if possible. If the distribution offers a live session, use it to check the devices and functions you rely on. It is a practical check of your setup, not a guarantee that every installed configuration will work.
  5. Plan for installation and updates. Ubuntu’s 26.04 LTS release notes recommend internet access for updates and additional software, but say it is not required for the initial installation. That does not mean updates or extra packages are available offline. Ubuntu 26.04 release notes
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

What should I compare when choosing a distribution?

Once a distribution appears compatible, compare its policies and maintenance demands against your needs. A suitable choice is not just a release with a convenient name or the longest headline support period; check what is actually covered and what your hardware and software require.
