To check whether a Baldur’s Gate 3 mod still works after an update, note your installed game version and platform, then check the mod author’s latest release notes for compatibility with that build. For supported mods, also review the in-game Mod Manager and Mod Verification window. Back up your save and record your mod list before changing anything; a mod appearing in a browser or manager does not by itself prove it works with the latest patch.
What determines whether a BG3 mod is compatible?
Compatibility is specific to the combination of your game build, platform, mod version, dependencies, and other installed mods. There is no universal list that can confirm every third-party mod works with every update, so you need to check the status of each mod in your own setup.
Larian warns that updates and conflicts between third-party mods can affect stability or prevent mods from working correctly. After a major update, some mod authors may need time to release an update; Larian advised players to expect that possibility in its April 15, 2025 Patch 8 announcement.
Check compatibility before loading your save
- Record your game build and platform. Check the version shown by the game or launcher, and note whether you play on PC, Mac, PlayStation, or Xbox. Compatibility statements may apply to a particular build or platform rather than every installation.
- Back up your save and capture your mod setup. Copy important saves and write down or screenshot your active mods and their load order. Larian’s modding documentation points creators to best practices for backups, versioning, and conflicts; preserving your own current setup makes troubleshooting safer, too.
- Check every mod’s release information. Open its official Mod Manager page or original author page. Look for an explicit compatibility note for your installed game patch, the date of the latest update, required dependencies, and known conflicts. If the author has not confirmed support, treat compatibility as unknown rather than assuming the mod works.
- Review the in-game manager and verification prompts. For supported mods, check the Mod Manager and Mod Verification window for missing, mismatched, or update-needed entries. Larian describes this verification flow in its Patch 8 announcement. Unsupported local mods may not receive embedded update checks, so look to their author or original source for status.
- Confirm requirements and conflicts. Make sure required mods are installed and load before the mods that depend on them. Check for declared conflicts as well. The official publishing documentation explains that dependencies establish required mods and load order, while conflict declarations can prompt the game to disable a known conflicting mod. Those checks do not prove compatibility with a new game patch.
- Test cautiously before returning to your main save. If the game reports an issue, or you see a symptom such as a blank hotbar, test whether it persists with mods disabled. If it does not, re-enable mods in small groups, respecting dependencies, to narrow down the cause. This can identify a problematic mod or combination, but it may not uncover every interaction.
How to troubleshoot a crash or broken interface
A crash or missing interface element after an update does not automatically identify one particular mod as the cause. First preserve the save and mod list, then test without mods. If the problem disappears, reintroduce mods in small groups and check each group’s dependencies and conflicts. Avoid disabling a dependency while leaving a mod that requires it enabled.

If a blank hotbar, missing icons, or another problem remains after removing all mods, follow the troubleshooting guidance in Larian’s support site. Larian’s Hotfix #27 notes also direct players to contact support if an issue persists after troubleshooting with all mods removed. Unsupported local mods may not receive the same technical support as mods using Larian’s supported mod.io pipeline, as explained in Larian’s Community Update #27.
Check mod versions for multiplayer and cross-play
For a cross-play lobby, every participant must have the same versions of the mods installed. Use the Mod Verification prompts to identify mismatches, then coordinate updates and mod lists with the other players. When browsing for a console- or Mac-compatible mod for a cross-play session, PC players can use the “Available on Console & Mac” tag described in Larian’s Patch 8 announcement.

Platform restrictions matter: Larian says third-party mods cannot be used on consoles, and its Patch 8 announcement sets a console mod limit of 100. That is a console-specific cap, not a general PC limit.

If a mod page has no update note for your installed build, the author has not established compatibility there. You can wait for an author update or test cautiously with a backed-up save, but neither the mod’s presence in a browser nor a successful launch guarantees that every feature will work. For a major update, Larian has also suggested starting a new playthrough if you want to play while concerned about an existing mod list; see its Patch 8 update guidance.
