Local smart home automations can keep running during an internet outage if the controller, local network or radio, and devices remain powered and reachable. Routines that rely on a vendor cloud, remote access, or another online service may stop working or lose some functions. An internet outage is not the same as a home network or power failure.
What can keep working without internet?
Automations that execute on a local hub or controller can continue when the connection to the wider internet is lost. Home Assistant says its software runs on the user’s own hardware and identifies Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Thread, and ESPHome devices as options that do not need internet access. Hubitat says its hub processes automations locally.
That does not guarantee every routine will work. The local controller and network must still be operating, and the devices involved must be reachable. A router, access point, hub, or device that loses power or local connectivity can interrupt an otherwise local automation.
What may stop or lose functionality?
Cloud-dependent devices and integrations
If a device can only be controlled through its manufacturer’s cloud, the local controller may not be able to reach it during an internet outage. Home Assistant warns that cloud-only devices cannot be reached when their vendor cloud is required. Hubitat also distinguishes local automations from cloud automations that need internet access. Home Assistant’s FAQ describes locally working devices as the most reliable way to keep a smart home running through an internet outage.

Remote access and online services
Remote access is separate from local automation. Home Assistant listens on the local network by default; reaching it from outside the home requires an enabled remote-access method. Losing internet can therefore prevent away-from-home control even while an automation continues inside the house. Features or integrations that depend on services such as Apple Home, Google Home, or Amazon Alexa may also be affected when their online connection is unavailable.
Unavailable devices and reconnection
A rule may run but fail to change an unavailable device. Home Assistant notes that actions may not affect unavailable entities. A routine can also miss a reconnection event if it expects a particular previous device state: a transition from unavailable to online may not match an automation written to trigger on a different state change. Check the rule’s trace and the device’s reported state when diagnosing this kind of failure. Home Assistant’s automation troubleshooting guide explains traces and unavailable-device cases.

How to check whether a specific automation will work
Assess the entire routine, not just the hub brand. One automation can combine local triggers and actions with a cloud integration or remote service, so every part matters.
- Find where the rule executes. Determine whether the automation runs on a local hub or in a vendor cloud. Hubitat documents a distinction between local and cloud automations.
- Check each trigger and target. Identify how every sensor, switch, light, lock, or other device communicates. A local radio or network connection is useful only if the device and integration support local control; a device that requires its vendor cloud can become unreachable.
- Look for online dependencies. Review voice assistants, remote access, notification services, webhooks, and integrations. A routine may still perform its local actions while an online notification or remote-control feature fails.
- Separate the internet connection from the home network. Local-control claims assume the router, controller, local network or radio, and devices stay powered and connected. They do not establish how a particular setup behaves during a LAN outage.
- Test a representative routine safely. Disconnect the WAN while keeping the LAN running, then check whether the trigger and action behave as expected. Restore the connection and inspect the automation trace and device state. Do not test with safety-critical equipment unless you have a safe fallback.
What to compare when choosing a local-first setup
For a prospective hub or platform, compare the execution location, connectivity of each device, reliance on remote services, internet requirements for ordinary routines, and behavior when a device disconnects and reconnects. Home Assistant and Hubitat describe local operation, but the available platform information does not establish a complete feature-by-feature comparison or guarantee behavior for every device and configuration.

| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Where does the automation execute? | A rule running on a local hub can avoid depending on an online service for its logic; a cloud-executed rule needs that service to be available. |
| Can the trigger and target be reached locally? | A local rule cannot complete its intended action if a required device is only reachable through a vendor cloud or is offline on the home network. |
| Which features use remote services? | Remote control, voice integrations, notifications, or webhooks may stop even when local routines continue. |
| What happens when a device becomes unavailable? | Actions can fail or a state-based trigger may not match the device’s return to an online state. |
Limits to keep in mind
Actual behavior depends on the hub software, device firmware, integration type, network layout, and power. Official platform guidance supports local operation for the described setups; it does not certify every Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, or SmartThings configuration, nor every router or device, through an outage. No quantified outage-reliability figure is established by these platform sources.
