Keep your OLED display’s built-in pixel-shift and static-logo protection enabled, and avoid leaving a paused game or fixed menu on-screen while you’re away. These steps reduce the risk of persistent marks, but no setting can guarantee that burn-in will never occur.
Why game screens can leave marks on OLED displays
OLED burn-in is persistent uneven wear that can make a static element—such as a heads-up display (HUD), score panel, or menu—remain visible after the content changes. The concern is repeated or prolonged display of the same bright elements in fixed positions. Samsung lists gaming elements among potential sources of burn-in, while LG warns that taskbars, icons, and game menus left on-screen for an extended time may cause temporary image retention.
Temporary image retention and permanent burn-in are not the same. If a mark remains, follow the diagnostic and cleaning instructions for your exact display; a refresh routine may help with some issues, but it is not a guaranteed repair for permanent wear.
Which gaming habits reduce risk?
- Leave built-in protection enabled. Depending on the model, this may be called Pixel Shift, pixel movement, Adjust Logo Brightness, or another name. These features can move image positions or dim static elements. Samsung describes Pixel Shift and Adjust Logo Brightness; Sony documents image-position changes on supported models. Names, availability, and menu paths vary.
- Do not leave a static game screen up during a long break. Pause the game and step away? Turn off the display or use the computer’s screen blanking or sleep behavior rather than leaving a bright HUD or menu fixed on-screen. Dell warns that extended static images without a changing video, screensaver, or display-off state can cause image retention on the Alienware OLED monitors covered by its guidance.
- Allow the display to enter its normal standby state. Some OLEDs run automatic maintenance after use, and some require power to remain connected. Follow the manual’s instructions and do not interrupt a care cycle when the manufacturer says to leave the display off or powered.
- Use varied content and take breaks. Switching away from a game changes what is displayed, but it does not erase wear already accumulated. The practical aim is to avoid leaving the same fixed elements on-screen for extended stretches.
How automatic and manual refresh differ
Manufacturers use different names and schedules for pixel or panel maintenance. A shorter automatic compensation cycle is not the same thing as a longer manual panel refresh, and neither should be treated as a universal daily task.

| Manufacturer and product guidance | Maintenance details stated by the manufacturer | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung OLED monitors | Samsung says Screen Optimization is enabled after four or more cumulative hours and runs after the monitor is turned off; the stated duration is about 10–15 minutes. The page also describes an optional Pixel Refresh on some models, with a sequence taking more than an hour. Samsung’s support page does not provide a dependable publication date for these figures. | Let Screen Optimization finish and do not disconnect power during it. Use Pixel Refresh only if the exact model supports it and its instructions call for it. |
| Dell Alienware OLED monitors | Dell says Pixel Refresh can start automatically after at least four hours of use and takes approximately 6–8 minutes. It describes Panel Refresh as a longer cycle for after 1,500 hours or when available, taking approximately one hour. Dell’s support article was last modified January 30, 2026. | These are model-specific instructions, not a safe gaming-hours limit or a schedule to apply to other brands. Follow the on-screen prompt and the monitor’s guide. |
| LG OLED monitors | LG recommends Image Cleaning from the monitor settings to refresh pixels and reduce temporary marks. The cited support guidance does not state a universal timing schedule. | Use the monitor’s own Image Cleaning instructions; do not substitute a TV procedure. |
| Sony OLED monitors and TVs | Sony describes image-position changes and refresh or panel-maintenance functions, with behavior varying by product. The cited guidance does not establish one timing schedule for all Sony OLED displays. | Check the manual for the exact monitor or TV; do not assume a TV menu path applies to a monitor. |
When should you run a refresh manually?
Do not start a long refresh every day as a preventative ritual. Availability, trigger, duration, and intended use differ by model. Dell, for example, describes Panel Refresh for a specific Alienware monitor context after 1,500 hours or when available; that figure is not a general OLED threshold. Samsung says its optional Pixel Refresh is available only on some models. Sony notes that refresh effectiveness varies with the amount of burn-in.
- Identify the exact model and open its official manual or support page.
- Check whether the feature is intended for routine automatic maintenance, accumulated use, or a persistent image issue.
- Start a manual cycle only as directed, and follow any instruction about leaving the display off or connected to power until it completes.
- If a mark persists after the recommended procedure, contact the manufacturer rather than repeatedly running refresh cycles.
What to check if a mark remains
First determine whether the mark is temporary image retention or persistent panel wear. Follow the manufacturer’s troubleshooting path: LG’s monitor guidance points to Image Cleaning for temporary marks, while LG’s separate TV instructions describe Pixel Refresher. Dell and Sony also provide product-specific maintenance guidance. If the mark remains, consult support for the precise model and purchase region; warranty coverage depends on the applicable terms.
