You can run n8n on your own network and connect it to Home Assistant using a long-lived access token. Choose n8n’s one-line Docker setup for a quick trial or Docker Compose when you need persistent data and more control. Add MQTT only if your automation uses an MQTT broker; it is not required for a basic n8n–Home Assistant connection.
Choose a local installation route
n8n’s current self-hosting documentation describes two Docker-based options. Both can run locally; the main difference is how much configuration and operational control you want.
| Route | Best fit | Requirements and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| One-line setup | A quick trial with minimal configuration | Requires Docker on Linux or macOS, or WSL on Windows. The documentation describes this as a quick setup, not as the more configurable deployment route. |
| Docker Compose | A longer-lived setup where you want persistent data or additional services | Requires Docker and Docker Compose. n8n’s documentation identifies Compose as suitable for production deployments with additional services; it gives no performance comparison with the one-line route. |
Follow the current commands and configuration in n8n’s Docker installation guide. The one-line route is convenient for trying n8n, while Compose gives you a clearer place to manage persistent data and supporting services. A self-hosted instance without a license key runs the Community edition, according to the n8n hosting documentation.
Do not make npm the default for a new setup: n8n says npm installation is deprecated from n8n 3.0. The reviewed setup documentation does not specify minimum CPU, memory, or disk requirements for a particular smart-home workflow. You can host n8n on an existing suitable machine; a Raspberry Pi is one possible local platform mentioned by Home Assistant’s n8n integration page, not a required or workload-tested device.

Connect n8n to Home Assistant
Use n8n’s Home Assistant credential. You will need the Home Assistant host, its configured port, a long-lived access token, and an SSL setting that matches the endpoint.
- Create a token: In Home Assistant, open your user profile and create a long-lived access token.
- Add the credential in n8n: Choose the Home Assistant credential type and enter the host without
http://orhttps://. - Enter the port: The documented defaults are 8123 for HTTP and 443 for HTTPS. Use the actual configured port if yours differs.
- Match SSL to the endpoint: Enable or disable the credential’s SSL setting to match whether your Home Assistant endpoint uses HTTPS.
- Use the credential in a node: Select it in a Home Assistant node and test the connection.
These credential requirements are detailed in n8n’s Home Assistant credential guide. Treat the token like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to act through the permissions available to that Home Assistant account.

Build a workflow around state or service calls
n8n’s Home Assistant integration supports retrieving entity state and calling Home Assistant services. A useful workflow pattern is to trigger n8n, read an entity’s state, then branch on the returned value or send a notification. For example, a workflow could check a door sensor before calling a service or notifying you. This is an example of how the documented operations can be combined, not a tested automation result. See the Home Assistant node documentation for available operations.
When MQTT belongs in the setup
You do not need MQTT just to connect n8n to Home Assistant. Add it when your design uses MQTT messages or devices and services that communicate through an MQTT broker.

- CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit
n8n provides MQTT and MQTT Trigger nodes, but its MQTT credential guide lists a broker as a prerequisite. The broker is a separate component: configuring an n8n credential does not create one or replace it. Home Assistant and MQTT can both be workflow endpoints, and n8n’s HTTP Request node is another option when a service exposes a REST API, as described in the Home Assistant integration guide.
Keep local access local unless you need remote access
For a LAN-only setup, you can leave Home Assistant accessible only on your home network. Home Assistant’s remote-access documentation says, “By default, your Home Assistant only listens on your local network, which keeps things private and secure.” n8n being self-hosted does not by itself require making Home Assistant reachable from the public internet.

If you do need to reach Home Assistant while away, Home Assistant documents these approaches:
| Option | Router ports | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| Home Assistant Cloud | Does not require opening router ports, according to Home Assistant | Home Assistant calls this the easiest and safest option for most people. |
| VPN | Can avoid exposing Home Assistant directly as a public service | You must connect to the VPN before reaching Home Assistant from outside your network. |
| Reverse proxy | Depends on the network design | Requires correct proxy and TLS configuration, plus careful control of what is reachable. |
| Port forwarding | Yes | Exposes a route through your router and requires securing and encrypting the traffic. Home Assistant warns, “Just putting a port up is not secure.” |
These options and cautions are covered in Home Assistant’s remote-access documentation. Remote access is a separate choice from running n8n locally; do not forward a port simply to make the local integration work.

Security responsibilities for self-hosted n8n
Self-hosting gives you control, but it also makes you responsible for securing the deployment. n8n’s self-hosted security guidance recommends operational safeguards that do not happen automatically just because n8n is running on your own machine:
- Use a reverse proxy to provide TLS when serving n8n over a network.
- Protect data at rest with encrypted storage.
- Run n8n’s security audit and review the findings.
- Consider the risks of community nodes before installing them.
- Control access to powerful nodes and external module imports.
Keep credentials and tokens out of shared workflow exports and limit who can edit workflows that control devices. Apply the same care to any remote route into Home Assistant: it expands who or what can reach your home automation system.
Quick Recap
Quick decision checklist
- For a low-configuration trial, use n8n’s one-line Docker setup on a supported host.
- For persistent data and supporting services, choose Docker Compose.
- For Home Assistant actions or state checks, configure the Home Assistant credential with the right host, port, token, and SSL setting.
- For MQTT-based automations, provide a separate broker.
- For ordinary local use, keep Home Assistant LAN-only; add remote access only when needed and choose a secured route deliberately.
