Before installing or changing Baldur’s Gate 3 mods, exit the game and copy its active Savegames folder somewhere separate. On Windows, the usual location is %LocalAppData%Larian StudiosBaldur's Gate 3PlayerProfilesPublicSavegames. Keep that copy intact: Steam Cloud can sync saves, but it is not a guaranteed rollback, and a backup cannot make a modded save compatible with every mod or game update.
Back up BG3 saves on Windows
- Exit Baldur’s Gate 3. Copying after the game closes avoids copying a save while it may still be changing.
- Open the active profile folder. In File Explorer, paste
%LocalAppData%Larian StudiosBaldur's Gate 3PlayerProfilesPublicinto the address bar and press Enter. The typical save location isSavegamesStoryinside this profile. Larian identifies Local AppData as the current Windows data location; see its Mod Issues guidance. - Copy the save folder. Copy
Savegamesto a different location, such as another folder or a separate drive. For a broader snapshot, copy the whole activePublicprofile instead. Larian’s launch guidance describes moving data from the Larian Studios folder elsewhere for safekeeping. - Label and verify the copy. Give it a clear name, such as
BG3 pre-mod backup 2026-10-07. Open the destination and confirm the expected save folders are present before installing mods. - Keep the original backup untouched. Use the modded setup for testing, but retain the separate pre-mod copy in case you need to restore an earlier state.
Make sure you copied the active Windows profile
Use the Local AppData location above rather than assuming a folder under Documents is current. Larian says the game now uses Local AppData. If the AppData folder is missing but a Documents game folder exists, starting the game can copy profiles and configuration files from Documents; that transfer may also bring old mods. Verify the active location before treating an older Documents copy as authoritative. Larian covers this in its Mod Issues guidance.
Steam Deck: the save path depends on the build
Larian distinguishes the Proton compatibility build from the native Steam Deck build, and each stores profiles in a different location:

For a manual transfer between builds, Larian instructs players to copy the Savegames folder from the Proton profile into the native profile. With Steam Cloud enabled, recent saves sync automatically; older saves can remain in compatdata and may need manual transfer. Follow Larian’s Steam Deck guide and confirm which build you are using before copying.

Larian’s support index lists Hotfix #34, dated September 23, 2025, as introducing the native Steam Deck build, followed by Hotfix #35 on November 20, 2025. Its support index displays no later patch entry, so check current in-game or support information if your installation has changed since those entries.
Cloud sync is useful, but it is not a separate rollback copy
Steam Cloud can store save games and other user data, and Larian says it syncs recent saves between Steam Deck builds when enabled. But synchronization is not the same as keeping an independent pre-mod snapshot: a newer state can sync, and conflicts may require care. Steam says Cloud cannot recover lost saves or resolve cloud conflicts for players; see Steam Cloud support. If a conflict appears, compare timestamps and avoid blindly accepting a version before you have checked which copy contains the state you want.

Steam’s Backup Feature is also different from copying the save folder. Steam describes it as backing up game files, and its article notes saved games are excluded for Valve-created games. For this task, copy BG3’s profile/save folder directly; see Steam’s Backup Feature instructions.

A separate copy gives you a recovery point from before you changed the mod setup. It does not prevent compatibility problems or guarantee that restoring will be straightforward after saves or cloud data have changed. Larian warns that updates, dependencies, and mod conflicts can affect mods; reported symptoms include saves that stop loading at a certain percentage, launch crashes, interface problems, and shader issues. Its Mod Issues guidance says: “While there are always risks of mods breaking – especially when your game updates – supported mods aim to offer greater compatibility and the ability to be used on all platforms.”

If you encounter an issue, Larian suggests disabling installed mods in the in-game Mod Manager to check whether it persists. Its instructions for third-party mods after a major game update also identify game-install Data folders and the profile modsettings.lsx file as troubleshooting locations. Those are troubleshooting steps, not part of making a backup; do not delete files as a routine backup step. For multiplayer, Larian says every player needs the exact same mods and versions; the official Mod Manager shows an Update button when a mod needs updating. See Larian’s mod guidance.
