Start with Baldur’s Gate 3’s in-game Mod Manager if you want the straightforward, officially supported route—especially on console. Choose Nexus Mods when the specific mod you want is hosted there but not in the in-game browser, and follow that mod’s installation instructions. The options can coexist: Larian says the game can recognize some manually downloaded mods and let you manage them in its load order. For a shared campaign, coordinate mod versions and load order with every player before you begin.
What is the difference between Nexus Mods and the in-game Mod Manager?
The in-game Mod Manager is Baldur’s Gate 3’s built-in browser and mod-management route. Larian introduced it, along with a modding Toolkit, in Patch 7. It is the natural starting point if convenience and platform support matter most. Larian’s Community Update #27 describes the official modding support.
Nexus Mods is a third-party site that hosts mods; it is not another name for the game’s built-in manager. A Nexus mod’s page may direct you to install it manually or use a separate tool. For example, one mod page describes using BG3 Mod Manager and mentions Vortex or manual installation as possibilities. That is guidance for that mod, not a universal installation rule. Can I use Nexus mods with the in-game manager?
Sometimes. Larian says the game can recognize manually downloaded mods and allow them to be managed in its load order. That means Nexus and the built-in manager are not necessarily mutually exclusive, but it does not guarantee that every Nexus mod can be installed, recognized, or managed the same way.

Use the instructions on the individual mod page to determine whether it requires a particular manager or manual steps. What to check before installing a mod
- Availability: Search the in-game browser first. If the desired mod is not there, check whether its author provides it on Nexus.
- Platform: Confirm that the mod is available and supported for your platform. Console availability follows an additional curation process, and not every Nexus mod is available on console. See Larian’s modding terms.
- Installation instructions: Follow the specific author’s directions for the browser, an external manager, or manual installation; there is no single setup that applies to all mods.
- Versions and compatibility: Check the mod page for its current version, supported game version, and compatibility notes. Larian’s official mod troubleshooting guidance is also useful if problems arise. The sources do not establish a universal update schedule.
- Shared saves: Before multiplayer or continuing a modded save with others, make sure everyone has the same mods, versions, and load order. Larian’s synchronization FAQ covers modded saves and shared play.
Bottom line: choose by mod, platform, and play style
Use the in-game Mod Manager as your default if its browser has the mod you want and you value the supported, simpler route. Turn to Nexus when a particular mod is only available there, but treat its author’s installation and compatibility instructions as decisive. If you play with others, settle on identical versions and load order before starting the campaign.
