You can limit how ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude use or retain your conversations, but no single privacy switch does everything. Model-improvement opt-outs, chat history, temporary modes, saved memories, and deletion are separate controls. This guide covers the current consumer-account settings documented by each provider as of October 2026; labels and availability can vary by account, region, rollout, and workspace policy.
Know what each privacy control changes
Before changing settings, separate the decisions you may want to make:
- Model improvement or training: whether eligible conversations may be used to improve a provider’s models. Turning this off does not necessarily hide or delete chats already in your history.
- History and deletion: whether conversations remain visible in your account and how to remove them. Deletion may have a processing window and exceptions.
- Temporary or incognito mode: a way to handle a particular conversation differently. Temporary does not necessarily mean that no copy is retained.
- Memory and personalization: whether the assistant uses information from past conversations or keeps saved memories. These controls can be separate from model training and chat deletion.
- Other data: files, feedback, voice, video, and screen sharing may have their own storage or improvement settings.
There is no single setting that guarantees zero retention across all these categories. Check the provider’s stated scope and exceptions for the control you change.
ChatGPT: change model improvement, temporary chats, history, and memory
Turn off model improvement
- On the web: while signed in, open the account menu, select Settings, then Data controls. Turn off Improve the model for everyone and select Done.
- On iOS or Android: open the sidebar, tap your profile icon, select Settings, then Data controls, and turn off Improve the model for everyone.
OpenAI says this setting applies across devices while you are signed in. New conversations can still appear in chat history: turning off model improvement does not delete or hide saved chats.

Use Temporary Chat for a one-off conversation
Start a Temporary Chat when you want that conversation excluded from chat history and from creating or updating memories. OpenAI says temporary chats are not used to improve its models, but a copy may be retained for up to 30 days for safety purposes. If you save a temporary conversation, it becomes a regular chat and follows your account’s normal settings.
Temporary Chat can still use existing memories, custom instructions, and plugins for personalization unless you turn personalization off when starting the chat. If you do not want those existing details applied, review the personalization choices as well as the temporary-chat mode.

Delete conversations and review memory separately
To remove a saved conversation, delete it from your chat history; archiving is not the same as deletion. OpenAI says a deleted chat is removed from your account view immediately and scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days, unless it has already been de-identified and disassociated from you or must be retained for security or legal obligations. Deletion cannot be undone.
A chat deletion does not automatically delete a memory saved from that chat. Review ChatGPT’s memory controls separately if your goal is to remove remembered information, rather than only the conversation.

Check files, feedback, and workspace rules
- Files: files saved in Library can remain separately from the conversation. Deleting the chat may not delete a Library copy; remove that file separately if needed.
- Feedback: OpenAI says that submitting a thumbs-up or thumbs-down response after opting out may result in the associated conversation being used for training.
- Managed workspaces: OpenAI says content from Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspaces is not used by default to train its models. However, an organization can control privacy features, retention, and access. Ask your administrator which policies apply; personal-account instructions do not override them.
Gemini: use Temporary Chat and review activity and personalization
Use Temporary Chat for a particular conversation
Google says Gemini Temporary Chats do not appear in recent chats or Gemini Apps Activity and are not used to personalize Gemini or train Google’s AI models. They may be retained for up to 72 hours to respond and process feedback, so the mode is not immediate erasure.
Review Keep Activity and media settings
Google’s product update describes Gemini Apps Activity as renamed Keep Activity. When Keep Activity is on, a sample of future uploads may be used to improve Google services. Google says users who prefer not to have data used this way can turn Keep Activity off or use Temporary Chats.

Google also describes a separate control for whether audio, video, and screens shared through the microphone or Gemini Live are used to improve Google services; the setting was off by default in the announcement. A separate Personal context setting governs learning from past chats. Review the current settings in your account rather than assuming that one activity toggle controls media sharing and personalization as well. Google notes that interface availability and rollout can vary.

Turn off model improvement or use Incognito
For consumer Claude products, Anthropic says you can change the model-improvement setting in Privacy Settings. With Model Improvement off, Anthropic says it will not use previous or new chats or coding sessions for future model training. That choice does not remove data already in a run in progress or remove information from models that have already been trained.

Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even when the main Model Improvement setting is enabled, according to Anthropic’s consumer privacy guidance.
Delete a conversation and understand the retention scope
Anthropic says a deleted consumer conversation disappears from chat history immediately and is deleted from backend systems within 30 days. If you allow model improvement, new or resumed chats may be retained in de-identified form for up to five years in model-training pipelines. Anthropic also describes different periods for flagged usage-policy sessions and feedback, along with legal and policy exceptions, so those figures are not a general deletion guarantee.
This guidance applies to consumer products such as Claude Free, Pro, and Max, including accounts on those plans using Claude Code. Commercial products and the API have separate guidance.
Choose the right action for your goal

Important limits for managed accounts and other chatbots
These steps cover the verified consumer-account guidance for ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude, not every chatbot or account type. Provider controls can vary by region, rollout, plan, or administrator. If you use an organization-managed account, ask its administrator about retention, access, and available privacy controls before relying on consumer instructions.
