The right choice depends on the specific Pokémon game, the species and evolution line you prefer, and the rest of your team. Type matchups can help, but they are only one part of how battles play out.
What Grass, Fire, and Water types tell you
Pokémon types influence how effective moves are against different opponents. For example, Fire is strong against Grass and weak against Water, as the official Pokémon Let’s Go gameplay guide explains. That relationship is useful when planning a battle, but it is not a complete ranking of starter choices.
Pokémon Support’s answer to “What is the strongest Pokémon?” states: “In the video game, it depends a lot on how you train your Pokémon.” The same caution applies when comparing starters: type alone does not establish which one will perform best for you. The answer is also not a starter-specific win-rate comparison.
How to choose a starter
Check the actual game and its starter trio
Starter species differ by game, so first compare the choices in the edition you plan to play. For example, Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield offer Grookey (Grass), Scorbunny (Fire), and Sobble (Water). Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl offer Turtwig (Grass), Chimchar (Fire), and Piplup (Water). These are examples from different games, not a single shared starter set.

Consider the evolution line, not only the first form
A starter’s later forms can have different or additional types, which may affect its matchups. The official Pokédex lists Venusaur as Grass/Poison and Charizard as Fire/Flying. Those examples illustrate why it is worth checking the full evolution line for the particular game you are playing. They do not establish that every starter gains a second type, or that a type combination is automatically better.
Think about the team you want to build
A starter does not have to cover every matchup by itself. The official Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl battling guide recommends building a diverse assortment of Pokémon types and moves, since Pokémon have both advantages and vulnerabilities. Consider which teammates and moves could cover a starter’s weaknesses or provide matchups your team otherwise lacks.

Choose a line you enjoy
Design, personality, and attachment to a particular Pokémon are valid reasons to choose it. A September 2025 Pokémon Forums discussion frames the question around players’ favorite starters. That is an example of preference-based discussion, not a survey or evidence that one type is more popular.
Quick comparison by decision factor

Keep video-game and TCG type descriptions separate
Grass, Fire, and Water descriptions in the Pokémon Trading Card Game do not establish how video-game starters perform. The 2023-indexed TCG rulebook describes card-game patterns such as Grass cards healing or Poisoning, Fire cards using powerful attacks that may require time to build again, and Water cards manipulating Energy or moving opposing Pokémon. Those are TCG mechanics, not a ranking of video-game starter types.

Is one starter type strongest?
No universal ranking is established by the available official guidance. The sources explain type mechanics and recommend training and team diversity; they do not provide a published statistic ranking Grass, Fire, and Water starters by win rate or popularity. Compare the specific game’s species, evolution lines, and team possibilities, then choose the one you most want to play.
