Stone tools can preserve evidence of human presence and manufacture long after wood, fiber, food, and other organic materials have decayed. When perishable artifacts do survive, they add evidence stone cannot: which biological materials people selected and how they used them in daily life. Neither kind of object tells the whole story on its own; interpretation depends on how an artifact was made, where it was found, and what happened to it before and after excavation.

What can stone tools tell archaeologists?

Stone is durable, so tools made from it can remain in the archaeological record long after many other traces disappear. Their presence can mark human activity in a place. Researchers can also study how a tool was made and use those traces to develop hypotheses about what it might have been used for. The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History explains the importance of stone tools as enduring evidence of earlier human presence in its archaeology education resource.

A tool’s shape alone does not prove a particular use. Archaeologists interpret it alongside manufacturing traces, its location and associations, and other evidence from the site. A stone tool can reveal part of a community’s technology and activities, but it cannot by itself show every material or practice that has vanished.

What can perishable artifacts reveal?

Wood, plant fiber, leather, textiles, and food remains can provide evidence of resource choices and everyday practices that stone cannot. The National Park Service’s Zion collection describes a yucca-fiber sandal dating approximately to Pueblo I or Pueblo II, AD 700–1100. Its survival offers evidence of a chosen plant material and how people incorporated it into daily life. The same Zion artifacts resource notes that archaeologists often identify Archaic occupations through stone tools because perishable prehistoric objects are rarely preserved.

Organic traces can also remain on tools or other objects. Organic residue analysis can help identify food remains and materials used in manufacturing, including resins, tars, and pitches, according to Historic England’s 2017 guidance on organic residue analysis. Such identification depends on what has survived and whether it can be analyzed reliably; residue is not guaranteed to remain on every tool.

How do archaeologists infer how an artifact was used?

Interpretation combines the object’s material and manufacture with its archaeological context. Researchers ask what an object is made of, how it was shaped, what activities it could support, and what other finds were associated with it. Provenience—the documented place where an object was found—helps preserve those relationships.

  • Material and manufacture: Stone may preserve traces of toolmaking, while wood and fiber can identify selected biological resources and construction techniques.
  • Associations: Nearby objects and site features can help establish which activities or people an artifact may relate to.
  • Preservation history: Burial conditions and changes during excavation or storage affect what evidence remains available for study.
  • Scientific analyses: Depending on the object and sample, analyses may support dating, material or species identification, research into health and nutrition, or DNA study. The Canadian Conservation Institute outlines these uses in its guidance on archaeological collections.

These lines of evidence support interpretations; they do not make every proposed use certain. Contamination can interfere with scientific analysis, so careful recovery and handling matter, particularly when further testing is planned.

Why do stone tools survive when wooden artifacts decay?

Different materials deteriorate at different rates, and the burial environment can matter as much as the material itself. Stone is relatively durable. Organic materials usually decay more readily, but they can survive when conditions slow that decay. The Canadian Conservation Institute describes exceptional preservation in very wet, very dry, frozen, or low-oxygen settings. Permafrost and underwater burial, for example, can preserve wood, leather, and textiles.

Organic remains are more vulnerable in oxygenated, well-drained soils and in settings with changing water levels or seasonal freeze-thaw cycles. Burial chemistry also matters: protein-based materials such as wool and leather are better preserved in mildly acidic conditions, while cellulosic materials such as wood are better preserved in slightly basic soils, according to the Institute’s preservation guidance.

This uneven survival creates a bias in what archaeologists can study. An assemblage dominated by stone does not prove that people mostly relied on stone; wood, fiber, food, and other materials may have been used extensively but left little or no surviving trace. The American Museum of Natural History explains this contrast in What Is Archaeology?

How can excavation affect preservation?

An artifact may have survived because it was adapted to the conditions around it. Excavation exposes it to a new environment—potentially different moisture, oxygen, temperature, or light—and deterioration can accelerate. Wet organic objects are especially vulnerable: if allowed to dry without control, they may shrink, distort, crack, or collapse irreversibly.

The Canadian Conservation Institute recommends taking preservation conditions into account after recovery—for example, keeping objects found wet wet—and involving conservators in planning. Fragile finds also need protection during lifting and transport. If scientific analysis may follow, recovery and handling should limit contamination.

What the surviving evidence can—and cannot—show

Rare organic finds can illuminate materials and activities that a stone-only record would miss, but they represent exceptional survival rather than a complete inventory of past life. For instance, dry rock shelters in northwestern Arkansas and southern Missouri have preserved wood and other perishable tools. The Illinois State Museum discusses these collections in its resource on raw materials and technology. Many of those artifacts were excavated in the 1920s and are poorly recorded and dated; later occupations predominate in the collections. They should not all be presented as securely Archaic.

Residue evidence has its own limits. A 2010 experimental study buried organic micro-residues on stone tools for a year in deposits at Sterkfontein, Sibudu, and Zelhem. It reported that biological weathering was the main cause of residue decay and that preservation varied with site conditions. The findings, published in the Journal of Archaeological Science, concern the survival of residues in those experimental conditions; they do not guarantee that residues can be identified on any particular archaeological tool.

Read stone and organic finds together, while accounting for where they were found and how they were preserved. The surviving objects are valuable evidence, but their absence—especially for perishable materials—is not proof that people did not use them.
