Choose a game subscription by checking whether it includes the specific games you want on your device and plan—not by comparing advertised library sizes. Make a shortlist, confirm each game in the live catalog for your region, then weigh access rules and useful benefits against the time you expect to subscribe.
Start with the games you actually plan to play
- Write down your shortlist. Include games you expect to start during the subscription, not every title that sounds interesting.
- Check the live catalog for each service. Confirm the game is available in your region, on your platform, and at the tier you are considering. Check for announced departure dates where available.
- Identify how access works. A game may be part of a rotating catalog, a monthly claim, a classics library, a limited trial, or an add-on benefit. These are not interchangeable.
- Check device and play mode. Confirm whether you can download the game or stream it, and whether your device and region are supported.
- Compare only the benefits you will use. Examples include console online multiplayer, cloud gaming, retro games, trials, DLC, or publisher-specific libraries.
- Price the period you need. Compare the charge for the expected subscription duration, including recurring billing, local taxes, and any promotion. An annual plan may cost less over a full year but can be poor value if you only need one month to finish a game.
A large library is not useful if it misses your shortlist. Nor is a game in a subscription necessarily yours to keep: access may depend on an active membership and a title can leave a catalog.
Which services fit which kinds of game libraries?
Xbox Game Pass: consider it for Xbox, PC, or supported cloud play
Microsoft’s US comparison page lists Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, Essential, and PC Game Pass, with benefits varying by plan. Depending on the tier and device, benefits include a changing library, online console multiplayer, cloud gaming on supported devices, EA Play, Ubisoft+ Classics, and selected day-one releases. Microsoft describes day-one availability as applying to “Select games. Excludes Call of Duty titles.” Do not assume every new release—or every Game Pass game—is included on day one.
Microsoft says game titles, counts, features, and availability vary over time, by region, plan, and platform. Cloud gaming requires a Game Pass subscription plus a supported device and region; some streamable games are sold separately. Check the current Xbox Game Pass plan comparison and cloud gaming information for the specific game and setup you have in mind.

PlayStation Plus: choose a tier based on its catalog and extras
Sony’s US service has three tiers. Essential includes monthly games, online multiplayer, discounts, cloud storage, Share Play, and selected content. Extra adds the Game Catalog, a rotating selection of hundreds of games. Premium adds the Classics Catalog, game trials, and cloud streaming, along with lower-tier benefits. Ubisoft+ Classics is listed as an Extra and Premium benefit.
Sony says games can leave the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog, and membership must remain active to access catalog games. Its page also says that from January 2026, PS4 games will be added only intermittently. Premium cloud streaming requires a minimum 5 Mbps connection and 15 Mbps for 1080p, according to Sony’s US page. Consider paying for Extra or Premium only if the catalog or added features match what you expect to use.

This is most relevant if you play on Switch or Switch 2 and value online play, Nintendo’s retro libraries, or the included selected add-ons. Compare the titles and benefits you want rather than treating its library as equivalent to a broad third-party rotating catalog.

If two services both look promising, compare the same shortlist and subscription period rather than their headline library counts.
| What to compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Game overlap | Which shortlisted games are currently included, on which tier, and whether any are due to leave soon. |
| Platform and device | Whether the service supports your console, PC, handheld, or streaming device; distinguish download access from streaming. |
| Access type | Whether each title is a rotating catalog game, monthly claim, classic, trial, or add-on—and what happens when membership ends or the title leaves. |
| Useful benefits | Whether you need online multiplayer, cloud play, trials, retro titles, DLC, or publisher rewards. |
| Real cost | The price for the period you expect to subscribe, recurring-billing terms, local taxes, promotions, and regional storefront pricing. |
Prefer the lower tier when it already covers your games and essential features. A higher tier makes sense only when its additional catalog or benefits provide value you expect to use.
Do you need a subscription to play online with friends?
That depends on the platform, game, and type of online play. PlayStation Plus includes online multiplayer, and Sony says most purchased games require PS Plus for online multiplayer. Most free-to-play games, including Fortnite, Apex Legends, and Call of Duty: Warzone, do not require it, according to Sony. Xbox lists free-to-play multiplayer as open to every Xbox player. On Nintendo systems, online functions are limited to compatible games and features. Check the requirements for the particular game and platform before paying for a subscription solely to play online.
