Start watching after darkness on October 8, especially in the evening when the shower’s radiant is high. The Moon is expected to cause little interference, but the Draconids are usually modest: treat published rates as estimates, not a promise of how many meteors you will see.
When to watch the Draconids in 2026
The International Meteor Organization (IMO) lists the Draconids as active from October 6 through October 10, with a predicted maximum on October 9 at 01:00 UT. NASA gives the same instant as about 9 p.m. EDT on October 8. These are two time-zone expressions of one predicted peak, not separate events. IMO 2026 calendar; NASA’s October 2026 sky guide.
For the best practical window, go out after local darkness on October 8 and continue into the early hours of October 9 if conditions allow. The predicted peak is not a guarantee that activity will be strongest at that exact moment where you are: local sunset, darkness, cloud cover, obstructions, and the radiant’s altitude all affect what you can see.
How the timing varies by location
The 9 p.m. time applies to Eastern Daylight Time. In other time zones, convert 01:00 UTC on October 9 to your local clock; the local date may still be October 8. The IMO describes the radiant as north-circumpolar for latitudes north of about 45° N, so it remains above the horizon throughout the night at those latitudes. The shower generally favors Northern Hemisphere observers. In the Southern Hemisphere, the viewing opportunity is narrower, around nightfall, and observers should expect relatively few meteors. How many meteors might you see?
Expect a modest shower rather than a dependable display. Estimates differ by source and viewing conditions:
| Source | Published estimate | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| International Meteor Organization | ZHR = 5 (?) | The 2026 calendar marks the estimate as uncertain; ZHR is a standardized rate, not a personal viewing guarantee. IMO calendar. |
| NASA | A few meteors per hour | NASA’s general expectation for the 2026 shower. NASA sky guide. |
| timeanddate.com | Up to five meteors per hour | Published as an upper estimate in its 2026 guide. timeanddate.com Draconids guide. |
| EarthSky | Up to 10 meteors per hour | Estimate for ideal dark-sky conditions. EarthSky 2026 guide. |
These are forecasts or conditional estimates, not measured 2026 totals. Your actual count may be lower, particularly under bright skies, cloud, or limited visibility.

Will the Draconids produce an outburst?
Draconid outbursts have occurred because cometary debris is not distributed evenly along the stream, but an exceptional burst is not a reliable forecast for 2026. EarthSky notes that the parent comet, 21P/Giacobini-Zinner, passed perihelion in March 2025 and says a 2026 storm is probably not expected, while acknowledging uncertainty. Plan for ordinary activity rather than a storm. EarthSky’s 2026 guide.
Will moonlight interfere?
Moonlight should have little effect during the October 8–9 viewing window. The IMO describes conditions as perfectly moonless throughout the Draconids’ activity period; EarthSky says the waning crescent in the morning sky should not interfere, and NASA characterizes the Moon as nearly new. EarthSky gives the new Moon time as 15:50 UTC on October 10. IMO 2026 calendar; EarthSky 2026 guide; NASA sky guide.

Where to look in the sky
The Draconids’ radiant—the point from which the meteors appear to originate—is in the head of Draco, near the stars Eltanin and Rastaban, in the northern sky. The radiant is an orientation point, not a target to stare at: meteor trails can cross any part of the sky. The radiant reaches its highest point around nightfall, making early evening especially useful for this shower. NASA; timeanddate.com; EarthSky.
How to watch the Draconids
- Choose a dark, open location. Get away from city lights where possible, and select a spot with a broad view of the sky and few obstructions.
- Go out after dark on October 8. The evening radiant position is favorable; staying into early October 9 gives you time around the predicted maximum.
- Give your eyes time to adjust. timeanddate.com recommends allowing about 15–20 minutes in darkness.
- Look broadly, not only at Draco. Keep as much sky in view as you can rather than fixing your gaze on the radiant.
- Make yourself comfortable. Dress for the weather and consider a reclining chair or blanket while you wait.
- Skip the optics. You do not need binoculars or a telescope; meteor watching is best done with an unaided, wide-field view.
Local cloud and weather conditions can determine whether the sky is observable at all. Check your local forecast before setting out; no location-specific forecast is available in the cited shower guides.

What causes the Draconid meteor shower?
Meteor showers occur when Earth passes through dusty debris left along the orbit of a comet and, in some cases, an asteroid. As particles enter Earth’s atmosphere, they heat up and produce the streaks called meteors. The Draconids take their name from their apparent radiant in Draco. Their parent body is periodic comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner. NASA Science: Meteor Showers; timeanddate.com.
