Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf your Sony headphones sound bass-light, vocals seem unclear, or music feels flat, adjust the Equalizer in Sony | Sound Connect. Start from neutral, make small changes to one control at a time, and keep the setting that sounds best to you. The app’s menus and features vary by headphone model, so the exact controls may differ.
Find the Equalizer in Sony | Sound Connect
- Pair your headphones with your phone and open the Sony | Sound Connect app. Confirm that the exact headphone model appears as connected.
- Open the connected device’s settings and look for Equalizer. The menu labels and available features depend on the model. Sony’s current app is called Sony | Sound Connect; older support instructions may use its former name, Sony | Headphones Connect. Sony’s app guide shows an example of the device settings and EQ controls.
- If Equalizer is missing or unavailable, check the selected listening mode. Some modes disable EQ. The modes and restrictions Sony documents for one product are not universal to every model.
How to tune Sony headphone EQ
- Choose Standard or another listening mode that permits EQ, if your model offers one.
- Set the EQ bands to neutral, with the frequency controls centered at 0. Sony recommends starting there.
- Play a familiar track at a comfortable, consistent volume. Adjust one control by a small amount, then listen for the intended change before touching another.
- Compare the result with your previous setting. If a boost makes the sound boomy, harsh, or less natural to you, reduce it or return toward neutral.
- Save the balance in Manual, Custom 1, or Custom 2 if those options appear. Some app versions also offer Find Your Equalizer, which lets you compare options while music plays and save a selection to Custom 2.
This one-control-at-a-time approach is a practical way to hear what changed, not a scientific test. Sony’s guide describes the controls qualitatively rather than providing universal numeric recipes or headphone-specific target curves. Its advice is to keep adjusting until you find a balance that works for you. Sony Support’s equalizer guide explains the controls and recommends personal adjustment.
What each EQ control changes
Sony describes five frequency bands and Clear Bass. Use the descriptions as listening cues, not guaranteed outcomes: fit, headphone model, track, volume, and personal preference all affect what you hear.
| Control | Try raising it for | Try lowering it for |
|---|---|---|
| 400 Hz | More bassline clarity, particularly at low playback volume | Less cardboard-like quality in lower drums |
| 1 kHz | More general clarity and bass punch | Less dullness in some higher-pitched instruments, such as lead guitar |
| 2.5 kHz | More attack from guitars and low-pitched piano, and clearer voices | A softer, breathier backing-vocal quality or less guitar dullness |
| 6.3 kHz | More percussion attack and brightness in instruments such as synthesizers, guitars, and piano | Sony’s guide does not specify a distinct lowering effect for this band |
| 16 kHz | Brighter vocals, cymbals, strings, and flutes | Sony’s guide does not specify a distinct lowering effect for this band |
| Clear Bass | More bass | Less bass while preserving other aspects of the sound, according to Sony’s description |
Choose a preset as a starting point
Preset names and availability vary by model. In Sony’s help for the 1000X THE COLLEXION, the presets are described this way:

| Preset | Intended change in Sony’s example |
|---|---|
| Heavy | Emphasizes bass |
| Clear | Emphasizes treble |
| Hard | Raises bass and treble |
| Soft | Reduces bass and treble |
| Game | Emphasizes footsteps and gunfire in first-person shooter games |
These are descriptions of one model’s presets, not universal settings or proof that one option is best. Treat a preset as a quick starting point, then adjust manually if it does not suit your music or listening preference. Sony’s 1000X THE COLLEXION app guide gives those model-specific preset meanings.
Why the EQ may be unavailable
First check the listening mode, then confirm your headphone model supports the feature. In Sony’s documented 1000X THE COLLEXION example, Standard allows EQ and DSEE adjustment, while Music, 360 Upmix for Cinema, and 360 Upmix for Game disable Equalizer, DSEE Ultimate, and Android Head Tracking. Do not assume these modes or restrictions apply to other Sony headphones.

- Switch to Standard or another EQ-compatible mode, if available, and check whether Equalizer returns.
- Confirm the exact model on Sony’s Sound Connect compatible-model list. Sony marks the list current as of September 2026; compatibility with the app does not guarantee that every menu or firmware feature is available on every model.
- If the app still does not show the control, check model-specific support information rather than assuming the app itself is faulty.
Using EQ with a computer or spatial audio
Applying saved settings on a PC
Sony says there is no PC version of Sound Connect. Configure settings such as Equalizer in the smartphone app first; Sony says those settings can carry over when the headphones connect to a PC. Firmware updating may not be supported for every model that works with the app. See Sony’s Sound Connect support page for its app information.
360 Reality Audio setup
360 Reality Audio is a separate spatial-audio setup, not a requirement for ordinary EQ tuning. For supported headphones and compatible music apps, Sony recommends analyzing ear shape and optimizing the music apps. Its troubleshooting guidance also tells Amazon Music listeners to confirm the relevant immersive-audio setting in that app. Availability depends on the headphones and service; see Sony’s 360 Reality Audio support article.

Check model support before relying on app features
Sony’s compatible-model list includes families such as WH-1000XM, WF-1000XM, LinkBuds, ULT WEAR, and selected CH, XB, and WI models. Verify the exact model and the particular feature you want: an app-compatible model may not expose every setting or firmware function. Sony’s consumer app page describes Sound Connect as the current app, formerly Sony | Headphones Connect. Check the compatible-model list and Sony’s Sound Connect app page for current product information.
