Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose an AI symptom checker by checking what it is designed to do, whether it is appropriately regulated where you live, what evidence supports its performance, who it is designed for, how it handles urgent symptoms, and what happens to your health data. Treat its output as information—not a diagnosis, an emergency screen, or a substitute for a clinician.
Start with the limits: a checker is not a clinician
A symptom checker can help you organize symptoms and consider possible next steps. It cannot establish what is wrong with you or guarantee that a serious condition has been ruled out. For severe or rapidly worsening symptoms, contact local emergency or urgent care rather than first consulting an app. If a result worries you, is unclear, or does not fit how you feel, speak with a qualified health professional.
Check the service’s own intended-use statement. For example, Ada says its assessment is “not a substitute for advice from a healthcare professional” and does not provide clinical decision support; that is Ada’s description of its own service, not an independent endorsement. Read Ada’s stated limitations.
Check regulation and intended use where you live
Look for a clear explanation of the tool’s purpose, the people and situations it covers, and what it cannot do. A polished interface or an “AI” label does not establish that a service is suitable for medical use.

Rules depend on your jurisdiction. In the UK, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) says apps with a medical purpose and sufficient functionality may be medical devices, and advises users to look for visible UKCA or CE accreditation. Do not assume that the same mark or requirement applies in another country; check your local regulator’s guidance. The MHRA guidance on health apps and AI also covers intended use, updates, data disclosures, seeking professional care, and reporting safety concerns.
Look for performance evidence, not a single accuracy score
Useful evidence distinguishes at least three questions: does the tool cover the case, does it suggest plausible conditions, and does it recommend a safe level of urgency? A strong result on one measure does not prove strength on the others.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Study design: Was the assessment based on clinical vignettes, records, or real-world use? A vignette study tests responses to constructed cases; it does not show what happens when people use the app in practice.
- Who and what were tested: Check the study date, participant or case population, symptoms and conditions included, and whether the findings apply to your age group and situation.
- Outcomes: Look separately for coverage, condition suggestions, and triage or urgency advice. Ask how errors and unsafe recommendations were counted.
- Independence and funding: Note who conducted, published, or funded the evaluation. A company’s own results can be informative, but they are not independent confirmation.
- Currentness: A past study may not describe a current app version. Look for the version tested and evidence relevant to the version now offered.
NHS England’s buyer guide is written for organizations procuring AI in health and care, not as a consumer certification scheme. Its questions about whether performance matches manufacturer claims, alongside privacy, ethics, and ongoing support, are still useful prompts when assessing a service. Why no universal accuracy threshold works
A 2022 systematic review found that accuracy and triage performance varied across digital symptom checkers. It does not establish one score that makes every product trustworthy. Read the measures and study context rather than treating one headline percentage as a guarantee. Read the systematic review in npj Digital Medicine.

Company-reported figures also need context. Ada’s account of a 2020 clinical-vignette comparison of Ada with seven other apps and general practitioners reports 99% condition coverage, safe advice 97% of the time, and the correct condition in the top three 71% of the time. The same company article says other apps’ top-three accuracy ranged from about 23% to 43% in that particular test. These are Ada-published results from a historical vignette study—not a current, independent ranking of consumer apps or a measure of outcomes in real patients. Read Ada’s explanation of the study.
Make sure the checker fits your age, symptoms, and situation
Before entering details, check whether the service supports your age group and the kind of concern you have. Its intended-use information should make clear any populations, conditions, or circumstances it does not cover. Do not assume that a general checker performs equally well for every symptom.

Skin rashes illustrate why condition-specific evidence matters. The American Academy of Dermatology reported that, in a 2022 study of eight checkers across 15 rash cases, 37 of 120 checker entries (30.8%) correctly identified the rash. Its summary also reports correct identification rates of 75% for pediatric atopic dermatitis and 62.5% for shingles in that tested set, while no checker correctly diagnosed dermatitis herpetiformis. These results concern that set of rash cases, not all symptom checkers or conditions. The AAD’s study co-author, dermatologist Yul Yang, said the tools did not always ask about relevant medical history and that not enough data was available for accurate diagnoses. For a rash that needs assessment, seek a dermatologist rather than relying on a general symptom checker to identify it. Read the AAD’s report.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check how it handles urgent, persistent, or changing symptoms
A reputable service should explain what to do if symptoms may be urgent and how to seek human care. Look for clear safety instructions for symptoms that persist, worsen, or change, rather than a result that simply names possible conditions. The app should not act as a gatekeeper that delays emergency care.

Follow the tool’s stated scope and safety instructions, but use your judgment: seek appropriate local care if symptoms are severe or rapidly worsening, or if an app’s advice conflicts with how unwell you feel. In the UK, the MHRA advises users to seek professional advice when in doubt and to keep medical-device apps updated.
Read the privacy terms before sharing health information
Review the privacy notice and terms before entering sensitive details. Find out which identifiers and health information are collected, how long they are retained, how they are used, and whether they are shared with third parties. If these answers are difficult to find or vague, that is a reason to pause before sharing.
The MHRA specifically advises users to understand how an app stores, uses, and shares health and personal data. Its guidance also addresses app updates and reporting safety concerns involving software and AI: MHRA guidance for users.
Compare services with the same checklist
If you are considering multiple checkers, assess each against the same questions instead of relying on branding, rankings, or an overall score:
- What is its stated purpose, and what does it say it cannot do?
- What regulatory status applies in your jurisdiction?
- What performance evidence is available, who produced it, when was it conducted, and what outcomes did it measure?
- Which ages, symptoms, and conditions are covered or excluded?
- Does it explain when and how to seek urgent or human care?
- What information does it collect, how long is it retained, and with whom is it shared?
- Can you use it accessibly, and is a route to a clinician clear?
There is no established overall winner from the evidence cited here: it does not provide a current independent head-to-head comparison across the full market. NHS England’s procurement questions can help structure a comparison, but they do not certify consumer apps. NHS England buyer guidance.
